Spike Jonze’s Arcade Fire Film Might Just Be a Sandlot Homage With Guns

Sometime last year, Spike Jonze shot a 30-minute film with Arcade Fire called Scenes From the Suburbs in honor of the Canadian indie band’s third album, The Suburbs . Today, the first trailer from said project (which was written by Jonze, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler and Butler’s bandmate/brother Will) surfaced on the Internet, complete with so much suburban teenage ennui and narrator nostalgia that it ends up feeling like a modern-day version of the viewer-beloved 90’s movie The Sandlot . Let’s investigate.

Alonso’s Oscar Picks: The Kids Are All Right, The Oscars Are Not

When I was a little kid, I really, really, really loved the Oscars. For a wee gay movie-obsessed lad growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, it was the sort of annual event to be anticipated with both excitement and reverence. Every year when we’d get the TV Guide issue with the full-page “Close-Up” box on the Oscars, featuring thumbnail pictures of the ten Best Actor and Actress nominees, my heart would race. Before I was old enough that my parents would let me stay up late and watch the whole thing (this was back when the show began at 9 p.m. on the East Coast), I somehow convinced them to nudge me awake at midnight, tell me who won in the major categories, and then I’d roll over and go back to sleep.

Former Jay-Z Associate Tru Life Offered Plea Deal In Murder Case

Rapper and his brother considering deal related to 2009 incident. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Tru Life (file) Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Former Jay-Z associate and rapper Tru Life was offered a plea deal of 10 years in prison by Manhattan prosecutors on Wednesday in connection with a 2009 incident in which a 20-year-old man was fatally stabbed to death. Tru Life, born Robert Rosado, was once signed to Jay-Z’s Roc La Familia imprint. He and his brother Marcus Rosado were slapped with second-degree murder, gang assault and assault charges after the alleged altercation on June 15, 2009, that investigators said initially began with a dispute outside New York nightclub Pacha. The deal would reduce the severity of the original charges and require the rapper and his brother, who was offered a 12-year deal, to waive their right to appeal. According to Tru Life’s attorney, Alan M. Abramson, the rapper has yet to formally agree to the plea deal. In an e-mail message to MTV News, Abramson wrote, “The offer is being reviewed and no decisions have been made at this time.” Court documents reveal the victim, Christopher Guerrero, died as a result of the alleged stabbing. A second man who was allegedly involved in the scuffle was hospitalized for stab wounds. Tru Life, from Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood, is best known in the hip-hop world for his beef with Queens rap duo Mobb Deep over a failed collaboration. The Puerto Rican lyricist was later a cornerstone of Jay-Z’s then-burgeoning Latin-orientated Roc La Familia, along with Texas rapper Aztec. Tru Life never released an album on the label.

Arcade Fire And Spike Jonze Debut ‘Scenes From The Suburbs’ In Berlin

30-minute film premiered at Berlin Film Festival this week. By Eric Ditzian The Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Mark Metcalfe/ Getty Images Arcade Fire has showed off snippets of their Spike Jonze-directed short film, “Scenes from the Suburbs,” on oversize screens during their summer tour shows and in a five-minute music video in November. Finally, this week, the band got to display the full 30-minute film at the Berlin Film Festival, which frontman Win Butler hopes will become part of the group’s “visual legacy,” according to The Hollywood Reporter . “So that 30 years from now, when a computer virus crashed all the computers, and people have to look at DVDs to see what life was like in the early 2000s, there is some record of what we were thinking visually,” he explained at the festival. “And we didn’t want that to get completely lost just because of the times that we live in.” The short continues the band’s exploration of their experiences growing up within the often staid confines of the suburbs, which, as their tour collaborator Terry Gilliam has told us, is a “place that if you’re creative, you just need to get away from.” The film, however, spins suburban life into an impressionistic portrait of a group of teens living in an alternate reality where different towns go to war against one another. “You start from a feeling and it’s not necessarily the plot points of a song,” Butler said. “To me the film is very much about trying to talk about the relationships and the feelings of that age.” “We were trying to show the emotion and the emotional links without necessarily getting deep into the plot,” he added, citing influences ranging from Gilliam’s films to B movies. “It’s inspired by watching the first half of films and not having to figure out how to resolve them.” The Berlin premiere capped off a pretty stellar week for Arcade Fire. On Sunday, the band pulled off a shocking Album of the Year upset at the Grammys , then quickly jetted to London for the Brit Awards, winning Best International Album and Best International Group . And yet, for all this musical success, Butler suggested that perhaps a visual medium is where the group’s true artistic talents lie. “I think we would have been a band of moviemakers if making movies wasn’t 140 times more expensive than making records,” he said. Miley Cyrus Needs To Step It Up A Notch

I’m getting kind of sick of all these pictures of Miley Cyrus walking around the suburbs in her casual wear getting coffee or whatever, what the hell am I supposed to do with this crap? Here she is taking her rat in a dog suit out for a walk in some disgusting dumpy period sweatpants. Whoop-ti-doo! When she was underage she’d always be caught wearing slutty little outfits going to parties, and now that she’s an adult she walks around like she’s on her way to ladies softball practice. Boring!

A Video Round-Up of Harry Potter Fans’ Midnight-Screening Shenanigans

We’ve already established that the weekend belongs to Harry Potter devotees. But thanks to midnight screenings nationwide, this group wasn’t waiting until today to bust out their robes, wands, hats and scarves (not to mention lawn chairs, sleeping bags, board games and books) in anticipation of Deathly Hallows: Part 1 . The faithful got an early go of things on Thursday — and they brought their cameras.

Watch Spike Jonze’s Video for Arcade Fire’s ‘The Suburbs’

As legend has it — or Wikipedia — Spike Jonze was originally approached to direct the video for the Smashing Pumpkins hit “1979,” but he couldn’t because of other obligations at the time. The honor ended up going to future Little Miss Sunshine helmers Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, and the pair created a Billy Corgan-approved portrait of teen ennui in the suburbs. 14 years later, it looks like Jonze finally got to direct his own version of “1979” — the kind with roving military squads and the wailing vocals of Arcade Fire lead singer Win Butler.

Maria Menounos -The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

I’ve been in love with Greek goddess Maria Menounos ever since I first laid eyes on that killer ass smile of hers years ago, so I like to feature her on the site every chance I get in the hopes that she’ll notice me and ask me to marry her and move to the suburbs. Here she is at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards the other night flashing more than just a winning smile. Her little body is amazing, I want to touch it… With my mouth.

Lacey Schwimmer is Annoying for DWTS of the Day

Lacy Schwimmer is one of the dancers on Dancing with the Stars, but it looks like she’s more interested in being one of the failed celebrities she is paid to dance with, I can just tell in her eyes, and in her tacky, trashy, stripper from the suburbs shirt, that she’s screaming to be offered the chance to get naked in Playboy, or on all fours getting fucked by a black man in a sex tape like she was Kim Kardashian, because let’s face it, growing up as a champion Ballroom dancer, she wasn’t really getting much attention from pretty much anyone, ballroom dancing is some serious geek shit, that even her dad, the loser on Friends couldn’t respect or see a future in…. She’s 22, she’s a prime candidate for her 5 minutes of fame to blow-up horribly into an entertaining and slutty demise and I know that I’m ready for it.
