Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’ Invite Thrills Hanson

‘We thought we could bring the party — even if it was a fictional party,’ Taylor Hanson tells MTV News of video cameo. By Jocelyn Vena Hanson Photo: Getty Images Katy Perry rounded up quite the cast of cameos for her “Last Friday Night” video . The Marc Klasfeld-directed clip featured “Glee” stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale, “Friday” singer Rebecca Black, Kenny G, Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. Oh, yeah: It also had Hanson as the video’s house band! “We were flattered to be asked, and it was great to be a part of it,” Taylor Hanson told MTV News on Tuesday (June 14). “We had a really good time. It was one of those things that worked out really well. They said [they] needed a band to play the party, and we thought we could bring the party — even if it was a fictional party. “First of all, Kenny G’s an icon, so it was pretty awesome to, in some ways, have been able to perform together,” Taylor continued. “And, again, there’s a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek element to the entire concept of the video. We went in there without taking it too seriously. [Kenny G] was a scholar and gentleman, and it seemed like Katy was fulfilling the idea. She seemed like she was pretty happy with how things were coming together.” Taylor said it was hard to get Perry out of character as the geeky Kathy Beth Terry on set. “She was completely in character and to the point of like, ‘OK, where does Katy Perry begin and this character end?’ ” he recalled. “And, honestly, it seemed like she kind of is a Method person. She seems like she goes in all the way. So we hung out a little bit, and during the performance and everything, obviously, we were all there on set, but she was definitely inside of the character throughout the shoot, which sounds tiring to me.” So what would it take to get the guys to play your house party? “We work for Twizzlers and good times,” Taylor said. “You’d have to have a lot of spandex, a huge tree covered in toilet paper, Kenny G — apparently that’s what it takes to get us to a house party.” And now Katy owes the brothers a cameo in their next video. “I think she has some obligation to spread the love on the next round,” he said. “I don’t know. … We might have to come up with another character.” What did you think of Hanson’s cameo in Katy’s new video? Carmelo Anthony Says ‘You Can’t Win A Championship By Yourself’

NBA star spoke to MTV News at the 2011 NBA All-Star Game, a day before being traded to the N.Y. Knicks. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Carmelo Anthony Photo: MTV News On Monday, after months of speculation, close calls and near misses, the season-long drama surrounding NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony finally came to a close when it was announced that he had been traded to the New York Knicks. The trade involved a blockbuster three-team deal involving 11 different players, a sundry of draft picks and $3 million in cash. And that announcement was greeted with much rejoicing by long-suffering hoops fans in New York City, who finally have hope that their beloved Knicks can end their 40-year championship drought with the tandem of ‘Melo and Amar’e Stoudemire a ton of cap room, and a potentially scintillating free-agent class in 2012. But before he packed his bags for NYC, Anthony spoke about his potential move to MTV News on Sunday, hours before the tip-off of the 2011 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. And even then, he seemed to signify that big things were in the works. “I mean, I think right now, people got to do what they got to do. At the end of the day, people want to win, and I guess some people feel like they can’t do it by their selves,” Anthony said. “You can’t win a championship by yourself, so you start seeing teams forming up, creating the tandems that they need and the players they need, and trying to go out there and compete.” Anthony then added, with a smile, “It’s going to be a big weekend, man.” And those sentiments were echoed by Anthony’s wife, actress and former MTV on-air talent La La Vazquez, who didn’t let on that the continuous coverage of her husband’s situation was weighing on her. She was just focused on having a good time during the celeb-filled All-Star weekend , and determined to let the chips fall where they may. “This weekend is amazing and so much fun,” she said. “I am literally running off zero sleep. It’s been nonstop parties and fun.”

Hanson Say ‘Give A Little’ Video ‘Makes You Love The Song More’

Shout It Out ‘s message is ‘Get out there and let loose,’ Taylor Hanson says. By Jocelyn Vena Hanson Photo: MTV News The Hanson brothers released their latest music video, for their single “Give a Little,” on Tuesday (February 22). The sparse performance video for the Shout It Out track seamlessly includes dancers of all backgrounds showing off their skills. It’s a far cry from last year’s over-the-top clip for “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’,” an homage to the Blues Brothers. Crediting much of the success of “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’ ” to the video itself, Taylor Hanson said the guys have a new mission with this video. “With the ‘Give A Little’ video, we’re more thinking, ‘Hey this is about creating a template, a backdrop that just makes you love the song more,’ ” he explained to MTV News. “The difference with this song and the video is that it’s much simpler and much more about getting the song ingrained in your mind, thus was a very different thing.” The video is, in fact, pretty simple: It features cardboard cutouts, ballerinas, dancing couples, some paint splatter and even hip-hop dancers. The guys get in the action during a big dance break, playing instruments while surrounded by the clip’s various performers. “When we made the video, it was kind of the release after the high production of ‘Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’, ” Taylor explained. “With the ‘Give a Little’ video, it’s almost back to the blank slate. We invited all these dancers. We just set up a room, cranked up the music and threw a party and let people dance. The attitude is not about everyone doing the same moves; it’s about putting a unique twist.” The video’s dance theme makes tons of sense, given the song’s lyrics, including “Let your body lose control” and “You know she just wants to dance.” The guys explained that while they aren’t known for their killer moves, they enjoy the vibe that a song like this puts into the world. “There’s this energy to it,” Taylor said. “Strangely, there’s this dance theme. We’re not known for our dancing, but dancing is this metaphor that’s in the record. Kind of, ‘Get out there and let loose.’ “Spring will be here before we know it, and the song is upbeat and hopefully engaging.” Give us your review of the ‘Give a Little’ video in the comments section below! Hanson Have Some Advice For Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus

‘If you don’t define who you are … then that can take away from everything you do in the future,’ Zac Hanson tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Hanson Photo: MTV News In the ’90s, boy bands like ‘NSYNC and Backstreet Boys and pop princesses like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera ruled the charts. Hanson have managed to maintain a career long past that era and their breakout single, “MMMBop”; just last week, they released the new album Shout It Out. So do Hanson have any sage advice for the latest crop of pop stars, including Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus? “I think the thing about all those artists is, the idea of defining who you really want to be and being that,” Zac Hanson told MTV News on Wednesday, just a day after their canceled show with Drake in New York. “In a lot of these cases, this whole idea of movies and music and TV shows and multimedia whatever, that’s great, but it can also be very confusing,” he continued. “And also, for your audience, if you don’t define who you are or what you represent pretty quickly, then that can take away from everything you do in the future and cheapen any real art or any real thing you want to say.” Taylor Hanson agreed with his little brother’s advice, adding, “Really for anybody, regardless of whether you start young or do pop or rock, surviving in the business of entertainment is difficult. I mean, 90 percent of people don’t succeed. You just have to identify what it is you do and know that you’re always going to be the one who cares the most.” That means you should trust yourself over label execs, the brothers say. “Record labels, producers, TV writers, the whole nine yards, they can go onto another projects, but it’s your life, it’s your name,” Isaac Hanson said. “So in 15 years from now, 20 years from now, it’s going to be on your record.” What do you think of Hanson’s advice for the pop up-and-comers? Hanson Pay Homage To Blues Brothers In ‘Thinking ‘Bout Something’ Video

‘We all watched that movie over and over again as kids,’ Taylor Hanson says of the group’s inspiration for the clip. By James Montgomery Taylor Hanson in “Thinking ‘Bout Something” Photo: Cooking Vinyl Like most guys of a certain era, Taylor Hanson and his brothers grew up watching — and compulsively re-watching — “The Blues Brothers,” the 1980 cult classic featuring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the titular brothers on a mission (from God) to save an orphanage. But unlike most guys of a certain era, they didn’t just watch it for the copious car chase sequences. “We all watched that movie over and over again as kids. I think I’ve probably seen it 1,000 times by now,” Hanson told MTV News on Friday (April 16). “And, what’s great about it is, sure, you can sit around with a bunch of guys and watch it again and again because you want to see the car chases. But that’s only part of it. We all loved it because it captures a certain renegade spirit and the kind of blind optimism that goes with making music. Being in band is reckless and kind of messy, and the film definitely captures that reckless nature.” So, in the back of their minds, Hanson had always thought about paying homage to the film — they just didn’t know when they’d get the chance to do it, until one fateful day earlier this year when the band were kicking around ideas for a video for “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’,” the first single off their upcoming Shout It Out album. They wanted something that matched the joyous, retro-leaning feel of the tune and, all of a sudden, something clicked. “We wanted to announce that this record is sort of an unapologetic, bright, melodic thing, and so we — since we love this movie so much — we all watched one particular scene, with Ray Charles and the Blues Brothers band [ performing “Shake A Tail Feather” ] and we realized that if you played our song with the scene, it almost looks like they were playing ours,” Hanson said. “I mean, it was crazy. The tempo is perfect. It hit every music-geek button for us, and we absolutely couldn’t have predicted it. So we figured, now’s as good a time as any to make a video.” So, Hanson did just that. Working with Tulsa-based choreographer Heather Hall and director (and friend) Todd Edwards, they re-created the music-shop set from the “Blues Brothers” film (building it in the offices of their 3GC Records), recruited both fans and professional dancers and got to work. They shot the “Somethin'” video in two days, taking great pains to match the film, frame by frame, right down to the costumes and thoroughly outrageous facial hair of the Blues Brothers Band. “We put Isaac in a beard and long hair, and he looks almost exactly like [Blues Brothers’ guitarist] Steve Cropper. He was saying, ‘Is this too much? I look like Moses,’ but it was perfect,” Hanson laughed. “Honestly, it wasn’t all that tough to do. It was like when Peter Jackson directed ‘Lord of the Rings’ — he was already obsessed with it. And that’s how we were with ‘The Blues Brothers.’ ” The “Thinking ‘Bout Something'” video premiered Thursday on MySpace , and almost instantly struck a chord with audiences everywhere, including Perez Hilton, who praised the clip and singled out the cameo by “Weird” Al Yankovic, a longtime Hanson friend and collaborator who just had to make an appearance. “We’ve known him since ’98 and, small world, but he shot [the 1989 film] ‘UHF’ in Tulsa. Plus he’s sort of the king of recreating these pop-culture moments, so having him in it was almost like a blessing,” Hanson said. “He was a consummate professional. He learned all the dance moves, got the wardrobe just right. He was great.” So, really, the video is a success on many different levels: It let the band realize a long-standing dream, it has earned them all sorts of exposure and it reunited them with old friends. And while all of that is nice, Hanson says the most important thing is that the clip seems to resonate with people of all generations. “On the surface level, some people may just see it as a bunch of dancing, and that’s great. But then, as a deep cut, a lot of people instantly recognize it as being a tribute to ‘The Blues Brothers,’ ” he said. “It was very much a labor of love for us. It was a true DIY production, much like everything this band does … we’re really happy so many people like it.” Related Artists Hanson
