3 Docs to Watch For: A Disgraced Governor, the Hot Bard of New Jersey and Steamy Mormon Sex

The problem with covering film festivals is that the things you have to see so often conflict with the things you want to see; bits of the latter have to be stuffed into the corners of the usual crazed festival going. There’s also the problem of making choices: The other day a new acquaintance tempted me, like a cartoon devil on my shoulder, to check out a Mexican film, Leap Year, that supposedly had, she said, “Lots of explicit sex.” Count me in! But after checking my schedule, I realized that if I went to see that, I’d miss the Alex Gibney documentary on Eliot Spitzer, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, which I was extremely curious about.

Worst Ratings Summer Ever for The Tonight Show Still Better Than David Letterman

Good news and bad news, Jay Leno haters. Ratings for The Tonight Show reached an all-time low in the advertiser coveted 18-49 demographic this summer, down 22 percent from the mark Conan O’B rien set a year ago. Hooray! Ready for the bad news? Leno still had more overall viewers than Conan did over the same time period last summer, and The Tonight Show still easily defeated The Late Show with David Letterman . The moral of the story: Late night television is doomed. [ THR ]

Andy Richter Finally Over ‘Bad Breakup’ With NBC

It’s taken 6 months and a 30-city comedy tour, but Andy Richter is finally over his Tonight Show heartbreak. “It’s like a bad breakup,” Richter told Variety . “Once you get over it, you don’t want to dwell.” It also helps that the comedian — who says he never would have abandoned Conan O’B rien after such an “unnatural ending,” unlike Max Weinberg — has a more cooperative network behind him. “[TBS] has been nothing but supportive. We can do whatever we want and be ourselves.” [ Variety ]

Conan O’Brien Heads to Bonnaroo, Looks for ‘Boobies’

Conan O’B rien is officially everywhere. The gangly red head drove his “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television” tour bus into Manchester, Tennessee on Friday for an appearance at Bonnaroo, where fans waited eight hours in stifling heat to see him perform. Once on stage, Coco joked that in six months he went “from hosting The Tonight Show to performing at a refugee camp.” Oh Conan — you so crazy! While at the music and comedy festival, O’B rien also took time out to act as hype man for Nas and Damian Marley. And before you make a joke, just know Conan already did: “I’m here because when you think reggae and hip hop, you think Conan O’B rien!” After the jump, video of Conan introducing Nas and Marley and a plea from the TBS host to see some “boobies.” Hey, it is Bonnaroo after all.

Emmy Awards Prepare For Final Jay vs. Conan Tonight Show Cage Match

It seemed like the dust had finally settled around NBC’ s 11:35 P.M. time slot. Conan had been escorted off the Warner Bros. premises to circulate the continent on a comedy tour that turned out to be just as therapeutic for its host as for its audience members and Jay Leno resumed his Tonight Show perch as if nothing weird or backstabby ever happened. So by the time that Conan announced that he was abandoning network late night for TBS , it seemed like the two would never go head-to-head again… until we heard about this year’s Emmy ballots.

NBC Reveals New Fall Schedule, Makes Implicit Apology for The Jay Leno Show

THR has details on NBC’ s new fall schedule, and from the looks of things, it seems like Mary Poppins is helping NBC entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin program the network: There’s a place for everything and everything in its place. “This new schedule brings NBC back to basics with its commitment to quality scripted programming, ” said Gaspin, totally not all thinking about the Leno Debacle. Rather than be in the slow, trainwreck business, NBC is putting itself in the packaged, theme-night business, and they’ve moved around a couple of your favorite shows in the process.
