Mizzou Appoints African American Interim President — He Vows To Address Racial Tension

Mizzou Appoints African American Interim President In the week since Mizzou football players forced the University’s racist president to step down with their protest, the school has been in a state of racial turmoil and unrest — with racist threats made against the Black student body. Now, the University has put a Black man in the driver’s seat to turn the situation on campus around. Via STL Today : After Michael Middleton founded the Legion of Black Collegians, he personally delivered a list of race-related demands to the University of Missouri chancellor in 1969. Some might call it fitting, then, that he take the helm of the UM system after the student group Concerned Student 1950 handed the university its list of demands for racial inclusion and shared governance. “It is clear to me the first step is to devote attention to addressing those demands,” Middleton, 68, said Thursday at a news conference. “It is imperative to hear from all students and do everything we can to make them comfortable and safe in our community.” The University of Missouri Board of Curators tapped Middleton, the university’s first African-American law professor, to serve as interim president after the resignation of Timothy M. Wolfe earlier this week following criticism of Wolfe’s handling of a series of racist incidents. Although the University is likely doing this to put a band-aid on the national PR nightmare they have on their hands right now, the sitting president’s plan sounds like a step in the right direction. Hopefully he can begin to make the campus a safe space for African American students again while he’s in the seat. Daniel Brenner/Columbia Daily Tribune via AP

Ex-Ole Miss Student Indicted For Hanging Noose On Integration Statue

Former University Of Mississippi Student Indicted For Hanging Noose On James Meredith Statue The DOJ has brought civil rights charges against Graeme Phillip Harris for hanging a noose and confederate flag on a statue of the Ole Miss ‘first black student. Additionally members of Sigma Phi Epsilon are believed to have played a part in the incident. NBC News reports: A former University of Mississippi student was indicted Friday on federal civil rights charges for allegedly hanging a rope and a flag featuring the Confederate battle flag around the neck of a statue of James Meredith, the university’s first black student. Graeme Phillip Harris was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of conspiracy to violate civil rights and using a threat of force to intimidate African American students because of their race or color, the Department of Justice said. The rope and an old version of the Georgia state flag, which displays the crossed bars and stars used as a battle flag by the South during the Civil War, was placed around the neck of the statue in the early morning hours of Feb. 16, 2014. Meredith was the first black student after the university was desegregated in 1962. “This shameful and ignorant act is an insult to all Americans and a violation of our most strongly-held values,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. “No one should ever be made to feel threatened or intimidated because of what they look like or who they are.” A spokesman for the university said Harris withdrew from Ole Miss in the spring of 2014, not long after the incident. There were others involved, the Department of Justice said. Three members of the University of Mississippi Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter were thought to have hanged the rope and flag around the statue. They have never been named, but the national fraternity suspended the chapter and expelled the three members from the organization a week after the incident. Sigma Phi Epsilon CEO Brian C. Warren Jr. said it was “embarrassing” that they were members. The Department of Justice said the investigation is ongoing.   SMH…bye racist beyotch!

Beast Mode!!!! Super Bowl Ready Seattle Seahawks Offer Marshawn Lynch Huge Mutli-Million Contract Extension

Marshawn Lynch Gets Huge Contract Extension From Seahawks Will there be a press conference ?? Via NFL reports: The deal is believed to include more than $10 million for Lynch in the 2015 season alone. Lynch currently is slated to make $5 million in 2015, the final year of what originally was a four-year, $31 million deal. The Seahawks believe that Lynch, who has rushed for at least 1,200 yards in each of the past four seasons, has outplayed his contract, sources say. They want to reward him for his work. The new deal for Lynch has been a topic of discussion between Lynch’s agent Doug Hendrickson and the Seahawks for the last several weeks. He’s the heart-and-soul of their team, which they recognize, and they want him to retire a ‘Hawk. As for his compensation, Lynch could end up being the highest-paid running back not named Adrian Peterson using average-per-year as a measure. This is a stunning turnaround from where the Seahawks were with Lynch earlier in the season. For a variety of issues — including Lynch’s somewhat chilly relationship with coaches, his age and his hefty salary — the expectation was that Seattle wouldn’t bring Lynch back for another season. But the way Lynch has played and led this team to another Super Bowl forced the Seahawks to reverse course. All this after he held out of training camp last year and then saw the team move some money around to offer him a band aid-style contract solution. His 2014 salary went from $5 million to $6.5 million. In the last few weeks, the Seahawks made an offer for much more. That said, Lynch is an enigma. Sources close to him have said for months that if the Seahawks win the Super Bowl he could retire. Perhaps tonight there will be some answers. How do you feel about your huge contract extension Marshawn????? Marshawn: Welp.

A “Lil Positivity:” University President Cuts His Own Pay To Help Out Lowest Paid Workers

KSU President Takes Pay Cut To Increase Staff Salary A Kentucky University president did what many would consider unthinkable to show the lowest paid members of the school staff how appreciated they are. Via CNN : The story of his selfless act went viral, but for Raymond Burse it was simply second nature. “I’m not extraordinary,” said Burse. “I’ve assumed that people do those kinds of things all the time.” In summer 2014, Burse, who is president of Kentucky State University, gave up $90,000 of his almost $350,000 salary so that 24 of the university’s lowest paid workers could earn $10.25 an hour. The move gave them a 40% pay increase. “I don’t mind giving up some of what I have been able to obtain through life in order to be a small help to them in their own lives,” Burse said. Burse’s help didn’t end there. The 63 year-old later surprised KSU football player Deshon Floyd with the remaining $2,000 he needed to do an internship abroad. In December, Burse offered high school shooting victim Javaugntay Burroughs a full scholarship. “With all the things they had to deal with, one of the things they shouldn’t have to deal with is whether this young man was going to be able to go to college,” said Burse. Now THIS sounds like a man who really cares about his staff and students!

Lawsuits: UCLA Forced To Pay $4.5 Milli Settlement To Black Surgeon On Faculty Who Was Depicted As An Oversexed Gorilla

It’s been over a year since we told you about Dr. Christian Head’s discrimination lawsuit against UCLA so we’re happy to report he’s getting pizzzzaid!!! Via LA Times reports : Dr. Christian Head, a surgeon at UCLA’s medical school, will receive $4.5 million to settle a racial discrimination lawsuit against the UC Board of Regents, the university system announced Thursday. The agreement settles the lawsuit, filed in April, that accused the university of failing to prevent discrimination, harassment and retaliation against Head. The head and neck surgeon alleged that he was retaliated against for filing complaints through normal channels and was denied teaching opportunities. Head, 51, also alleged that he was routinely publicly humiliated and once was depicted as a gorilla being s0d0mized in a slide show presentation during a resident graduation event. “The case presented difficult issues of alleged discrimination and retaliation that were strongly contested,” the university said in a statement. “…The matter was settled to the mutual satisfaction of the parties.” The regents approved the settlement in a closed-session meeting in San Francisco on Thursday. During a 2006 event for faculty, staff and graduating medical school residents, a slide show created by the residents — and typically reviewed by staff — included a photo in which Head’s face was superimposed on a gorilla that was being s0d0mized by a department chairman, according to the complaint. Without admitting fault or liability, the university acknowledged that “an inappropriate slide was shown” and regrets the incident, the statement said. Dr. Gerald Berke, chairman of the David Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr. Marilene Wang were named in the lawsuit and were accused of making “inappropriate racial comments and insinuations about blacks” and Head for years, the court document stated. Both are UCLA physicians and professors. The settlement will be paid through a state general liability fund. Head, who resigned from his position, could not be reached for comment. His attorneys deferred to the statement released by the university. Head received his medical degree from Ohio State University in 1993. He joined UCLA’s medical school as part of a fellowship in 1994, then worked as an intern in 1996 and began his residency there in 1997. Congratulations Dr. Head! We are so happy for this man… Perhaps now the folks over at UCLA will get their act together. YouTube Continue reading
