Take Our Breath Away…Please! The Top 5 ‘Top Gun’ Scenes We Can’t Wait To See In 3D

Oh, Top Gun . The Sullivan to Rambo ‘s Gilbert, it cemented pop-culture love for Reagan’s aggressive foreign policy , established the late lamented Tony Scott as a successful director, and catapulted Tom Cruise to A-list status, where he has remained ever since. Now, 26 years after its initial theatrical run, Top Gun ‘s barely stifled masculine angst and jingoistic pro-military message (wait, isn’t that the same thing?) feel more relevant than they did in 1986. (I blame Dr Pepper Ten for that.) What the world clearly needs is a chance to experience the film’s many delights with fresh eyes. And now we can, as Top Gun is getting an IMAX re-release in glorious, unintentionally homoerotic 3D two weeks before the February 19 release of the two-disc Blu-Ray set. Gird your loins everyone, because at the risk of writing this thing off sight unseen, 2D films converted to 3D almost always look terrible. It’s particularly bad when the movie wasn’t filmed in a way that really benefits the 3D experience. Top Gun is action-packed, but it’s basically a drama with fast jets every 10 minutes or so. Maverick’s character arc — that would be Cruise — involves him getting past the guilt of causing his friend’s death, falling in love, and coming to terms with the legacy of his dead father. Although 3D might benefit the dogfights, will we really be better off seeing a sort of passionate, blue-lit love scene unfold as if we’d stumbled into the very bedroom where it took place? Of course we will! And personally, I can’t wait to see these other choice moments popping off the screen: 1. Tom Cruise flipping the bird at a Russian jet before performing a death-defying maneuver so he can escort a panic-stricken fellow pilot back to their aircraft carrier. Moral of the story: Maverick is a loose cannon, but he gets the job done. 2. The touching teacher-student romance between Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise, which includes sex and sexy motorcycle riding. 3. Anthony “Goose” Edwards’ tragic death as he’s rammed face-first into a cockpit window.

Lizzy Caplan As She-Hulk? Actress Considers A Marvel Superhero Future — Alongside a Familiar Party Down Co-Star

Scarlett Johansson  might have some competition from Lizzy Caplan  in the Avengers world. Although the short film  Item 47 , which stars Caplan, hasn’t officially debuted yet — it’s one of the many Avengers Blu-ray extras, due out September 25 — the actress had fun riffing on the possibilities if her appearance in the one-shot  S.H.I.E.L.D adventure could lead to to her suiting up as a Marvel superheroine. “Well, I can definitely foresee Marvel not only asking me to be the star of one of their action movies from that short, but also [asking me] to cast the other people in the movie,” Caplan coyly replied during an interview for her latest picture, Bachelorette . “So I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I think we would be…” she trailed off before turning to Bachelorette (and former Party Down ) co-star, Adam Scott, for assistance. “I need to think of some Marvel character…” she whispered with a laugh, before adding enthusiastically, “Adam would be the She-Hulk, and I would just be a regular person!” Her response suggests that in any future Marvel projects she would just be playing her Item 47 character, Claire, a human who (with Jesse Bradford) comes across an extraterrestrial weapon and goes on a crime spree — only battling a superhero instead of holding up banks. However, given her natural quick wit and the image of her toting a Chitauri gun in Item 47 , we could envision her fitting right in with Iron Man & Co. Think about it — how fantastic would it be to see Caplan and Robert Downey Jr. play off of each other? Since Caplan is already (literally) in the door at S.H.I.E.L.D., they could have her suited up and smashing box offices across the country in no time. But until Marvel makes a decision, Caplan is planning to make a grand entrance in Pawnee, Ind. “I think she would be great on [ Parks and Recreation ],” Scott said, Caplan quickly interrupting him: “As She-Hulk!” And, of course, Movieline had to suggest that he would run into the superhero when his character, Ben Wyatt, heads to D.C. for a new job. “I mean, spoiler alert: I know for sure The Hulk is going to be a big part of this upcoming season,” Scott said with a laugh. “She-Hulk, I’m not totally sure about, but we can look into it.” Previously: Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford Talk Item 47 at Comic-Con Alyse Whitney is an editor at Wetpaint Entertainment in New York City. Her work has been featured on TVLine, Movieline, and Bon Appétit, among others. You can find her on Twitter @AlyseWhitney.

Tony Scott’s Notes Did Not Reveal Motive For Death

Tony Scott did not leave a reason for his suicide. The news came Friday from the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, which said that notes left behind by the Top Gun filmmaker did not give a motive for his self-inflicted death south of Los Angeles last Sunday. The coroner’s office also said Friday that the notes written by Scott did not mention any health issues, according to A.P. Soon after his death, ABC News quoted an insider who said the director had been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, which was later refuted by family members. Tony Scott, 68, jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge, which spans the busy L.A. Harbor south of downtown. The coroner’s office performed an autopsy Monday, but the results will take a month or longer before official details are released about the cause of death, though it is being treated as a probable suicide. Coroner’s office spokesperson Ed Winter said that the notes left behind had a list of emergency contact numbers and a separate message to friends and family. [ Source: A.P. ]

Can Bill O’Reilly, Ridley & Tony Scott Top These Other Past and Future Retellings of Lincoln’s Assassination?

In 1865, actor and Confederate loyalist John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in the balcony of Ford’s Theatre, committing one of the most notorious crimes in American history. In 2013, Fox News talking head Bill O’Reilly will team up with Tony and Ridley Scott for a two-hour National Geographic documentary exploring the events surrounding Lincoln’s death, adapted from Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever , co-written by O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. But with so many previous Lincoln assassination projects in the ether, what new ground can O’Reilly and the Scott brothers tread in Killing Lincoln ? Lincoln’s death, of course, was so violent, tragic, and significant an event that it inspired many a filmmaker over the years. D.W. Griffith made a film in 1930 — his second screen depiction of the act — entitled simply Abraham Lincoln , that examined the president’s life, taking a few creative liberties along the way. (You can watch it here in its entirety, if you’re so inclined.) In the same decade, John Ford made two movies with ties to Lincoln: The Prisoner of Shark Island , about the doctor who tended to Booth after the attack on Lincoln, and Young Mr. Lincoln , which focused on the future president’s career as a young lawyer. And as the decades went on, scores more depictions of Lincoln’s life and death were committed to celluloid as generation after generation of filmmakers sought to mine the event for the social and historical significance it bore to the shaping of America. Unfortunately, other attempts, like Robert Redford’s recent The Conspirator , proved downright snoozeworthy. Hence, it seems, O’Reilly and the Scott brothers’ attempt to jazz up the Lincoln saga with “feature-like re-enactments, rare historical archives and CGI.” CGI! O’Reilly and Dugard’s 2011 nonfiction book promised “history that reads like a thriller.” Set your DVRs for high intrigue at Ford’s Theatre! (And if that’s not enough Honest Abe for ya, there’s also Steven Spielberg ‘s Daniel Day-Lewis-starring Lincoln biopic and the promising Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter coming up later this year.) Regardless of how much adrenaline the O’Reilly factor pumps into recreating Booth’s dastardly attack in Killing Lincoln , I’m not sure it could stand up to the rollicking menace of this recreation, as seen in the major motion picture National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets : Or: Might it unearth new theories regarding what motivated Booth to pull the trigger, a la Family Guy ? In any case, there’s no way Killing Lincoln can capture the truth of the event quite like this sketch from The Whitest Kids U Know . I’m pretty sure this is totally historically accurate .

Tony Scott Platz Next Move

Sprechen Sie Deutsch , Tony Scott? Nein, nein, nein. The director is reportedly circling the thriller Potzdamer Platz as his next film, with a cast of Javier Bardem, Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke in talks for the story of a New Jersey crime family going international. And about that name: “By the time the picture pulls together its financing and distribution for a fall start, it will probably have a new title.” Noooo kidding.
