Sean Penn As Vince Vega? Paul Calderon As Jules Winnfield? ‘Pulp Fiction’ Could Have Been So Different

Twenty years after John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson , as Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, became arguably the most iconic hitman duo in contemporary cinema, it’s hard to imagine any other actors tackling those roles — especially the Royale with Cheese conversation. But the new issue of Vanity Fair   serves as a reminder that their Pulp Fiction parts almost went to other actors.  The magazine’s annual Hollywood issue includes an oral history on the making of Quentin Tarantino’s  violent 1994 masterpiece that recalls Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein was seriously opposed to Travolta being cast as the marvelously mooky Vega.  “John Travolta was at that time as cold as they get,” Tarantino’s William Morris Endeavor agent Mike Simpson tells the magazine. “He was less than zero.” When Tarantino, who was dead-set on Travolta playing the role,  submitted a term sheet that included his final choice of actors for the movie, Weinstein approved all of his choices except for the onetime  Saturday Night Fever  star.  Two much more bankable actors,  Daniel Day-Lewis  and Bruce Willis , had read the script and expressed interest in playing Vega, and   Sean Penn and William Hurt were also on Weinstein’s short list. But Tarantino and his agent proved to be even more stubborn. When negotiations over Travolta came down to the wire, and Weinstein attempted to put off casting the actor,  Simpson told the movie mogul: “You’re going to agree to it right now, or there’s no deal.” Weinstein blinked, and former Miramax production head Richard Gladstein says that 20 minutes into a screening of the finished film, Harvey cracked, “I’m so glad I had the idea to cast John Travolta.” Jackson, on the other hand, almost lost the role to Paul Calderon  ( Out of Sight , 21 Grams ) and had to fly in for an eleventh-hour audition. He wasn’t happy about it, especially after one of the producers confused him with actor Laurence Fishburne ( The Matrix ). That actually turned out to be a good thing based on this distillation of the audition: “I sort of was angry, pissed, tired,” Jackson recalls. He was also hungry, so he bought a takeout burger on his way to the studio, only to find nobody there to greet him. “When they came back, a line producer or somebody who was with them said, ‘I love your work, Mr. Fishburne,’” says Jackson. “It was like a slow burn.  He doesn’t know who I am?  I was kind of like, Fuck it. At that point I really didn’t care.” Gladstein remembers Jackson’s audition: “In comes Sam with a burger in his hand and a drink in the other hand and stinking like fast food. Me and Quentin and Lawrence were sitting on the couch, and he walked in and just started sipping that shake and biting that burger and looking at all of us. I was scared shitless. I thought that this guy was going to shoot a gun right through my head. His eyes were popping out of his head. And he just stole the part.” Lawrence Bender adds, “He was the guy you see in the movie. He said, ‘Do you think you’re going to give this part to somebody else? I’m going to blow you motherfuckers away.’” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Doug Gotterba Sues John Travolta, Asserts Right to Talk About "Steamy Affair"

The former pilot who alleges a gay affair with John Travolta, Doug Gotterba , says he never signed a confidentiality agreement, as the actor’s lawyer has asserted. Gotterba, who claims he served as Travolta’s pilot from 1981-1987, made headlines this year when he spoke at length about their relationship during that time. He is not the cruise ship guy or one of the masseurs alleging sexual assault on Travolta’s part; rather, he says their love was warm, passionate and consensual. A ” secret boyfriend ” with whom he had a “steamy affair,” to use his words. Doug Gotterba says after he divulged details, Travolta’s camp unleashed a media/legal tidal wave, one that infringed upon his right to … talk to the tabloids. Doug claims Singer threatened to sue him for violating a confidentiality agreement he signed when he stopped working for John – a pact Doug says doesn’t exist. Gotterba claims he did sign a termination agreement , but it didn’t include anything about confidentiality, and thus, he should be allowed to talk about John at all. Singer says Gotterba’s lawsuit is “ridiculous” because he DID sign such an agreement, and his claims are utterly without merit anyway. Stay tuned. John Travolta: Gay?   Yes, it could not be more obvious. Maybe, you have to wonder. No, of course not! View Poll »

Marc Anthony to Serve as Mentor on The X Factor

Despite a new promo implying otherwise, The X Factor Season 2 won’t be ALL about Britney Spears . There are three other judges, of course, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid; along with Justin Bieber as a recently-announced mentor. And now TMZ confirms that Marc Anthony has signed on in the same capacity. Look for J. Lo’s ex to assist the hopefuls assigned to Cowell on the upcoming season of this Fox competition, which kicks off September 12. Sources also say Nick Jonas will come on board as the mentor for Lovato’s group, meaning we are one mentor and two hosts short of filling out the Season 2 roster. With just over a week until The X Factor returns, some key decisions will need to be made in the very near future.

The news about John Travolta just keeps coming. Well, by news we predominantly mean largely unfounded rumors and celeb gossip . But it’s in the news just the same. The latest salacious Travolta gossip: Doug Gotterba, his alleged gay lover of yesteryear, believes the star used his celebrity status to manipulate him often. That includes pressuring him to make a sex tape. Doug Gotterba alleges he had a passionate six-year relationship with Travolta while he was his pilot, and claims the star wanted to film them … you know. “It came up, but I said no,” Gotterba claims. “He wanted to film it, and I said no … [the topic came up] when we were watching porn in his bedroom.” He says that he met Travolta in February 1981 and they soon became lovers, but that he always felt like the actor was in control of the relationship. “If he didn’t get his way, I knew about it. Whenever he got his way, I was treated like royalty,” he said. “He used his celebrity and manipulation to get his way.” At least he was a gentle, passionate and sexual creature . [Photo: WENN.com]

John Travolta Denies Cruise Ship Sex Assault

John Travolta is finally firing back at Fabian Zanzi, the one-time cruise ship worker who accused the Hollywood legend of sexually assaulting him in 2009. Travolta filed legal documents yesterday claiming the employee is lying. Fabian Zanzi claims Travolta exposed himself during a neck massage aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise, then offered to pay him $12,000 to keep it quiet. Zanzi detailed his salacious allegations in a lawsuit back in June. Travolta’s attorney, Marty Singer, responded to the claim, admitting John was on the cruise but denying all the allegations of misconduct against him. Singer notes that Zanzi filed a report with Royal Caribbean over the alleged incident when it happened, but failed to mention any of the sexual details. Travolta, who was also accused of similar actions by two male masseurs this spring, wants the lawsuit dismissed and for Zanzi to pay his legal fees. Separately, Doug Gotterba and Robert Randolph have both alleged sexual relationships with Travolta; he has denied or not responded to all claims. [Photo: WENN.com]

Fabian Zanzi Sues John Travolta For Assault

Fabian Zanzi, the cruise ship employee who claims John Travolta exposed himself to him during a massage in 2009, is suing the actor for assault. Zanzi is suing for unspecified damages , TMZ reports. Travolta, who was a passenger on the ship, ordered food and asked that Fabian Zanzi personally deliver it to his Royal Caribbean room, the accuser says. When Zanzi came in, Travolta allegedly asked for a neck massage, then when Zanzi asked for his neck, John exposed his erect penis instead. He then forcefully embraced him, Fabian said. Zanzi resisted. Fabian, who did not initially claim sexual assault , claims that Travolta offered him $12,000 to not say anything, and that the cruise ship management “refused to allow him to write out any details regarding nudity or sexual contact” with the star. Two masseurs also came forward with lawsuits this spring, claiming the Hollywood legend assaulted them sexually; both suits have since been dropped. Robert Randolph and Doug Gotterba have separately alleged gay trysts with Travolta.
