Media Fail: CNN, Fox News Erroneously Report Health Care Law Struck Down

The Supreme Court upheld Obamacare and its individual insurance mandate today, although Fox News and CNN apparently expected a different outcome. They were so surprised, they reported it was struck down! Many in the media expected the Supreme Court to throw out the 2010 Affordable Care Act, but no one officially knew until the ruling at 10:15 Thursday. Looks like CNN and Fox News jumped the gun. Fail. The Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling established that the law, which mandates citizens have health insurance, is constitutional, since not doing so results in a tax. Nonetheless, Fox’s ticker initially reported that individual mandate had been declared “unconstitutional,” while CNN said the mandate had been “struck down.” Both networks ultimately corrected their reports, but not before their utter idiocy was disseminated throughout the Twitterverse. Really, guys, awesome work. It’s unclear if they were merely confused by the court’s extensive 193-page ruling or if they had that text ready to go ahead of time and forgot to change it. In any case, as HitFix’s Alan Sepinwall joked, this would make for a great episode of The Newsroom … in two years, with the full benefit of hindsight.

MTV Movie Awards Go Live Tonight! Who Will Win Big?

The Girl on Fire and the Boy Who Lived are destined for Golden Popcorn greatness, while big things are in store for ‘Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Magic Mike’ fans as well. By Josh Wigler Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Happy MTV Movie Awards day, and may the odds be ever in your favor! You have no shortage of films and stars to root for when tuning into the big show tonight (June 3) at 9 p.m. ET, and that only makes the decisions harder. How can you possibly choose between supporting the Boy Who Lived’s last night at the Movie Awards and Katniss Everdeen’s first time in the arena? Too much pressure! Still, as in every competition, there will be winners and losers at this year’s show, with plenty of cause for triumph and heartbreak. And while we’re still hours away from knowing exactly who those victors are, we’ve got some sneaking suspicions about who will wind up owning the night. Keep reading for our predictions: “The Hunger Games” Before Iron Man and the rest of “The Avengers” sucked all the air out of the box office, 2012’s biggest commercial titan was the Girl on Fire. Tonight at the Movie Awards, Katniss doesn’t have to worry about Earth’s mightiest heroes — only Captain America and Thor are nominated for Best Hero , and it will take a miracle to boost them to the top — and can instead focus on main rivals “Bridesmaids” and “Harry Potter.” Fans have rallied behind “Hunger Games” in a massive way over the past year, and with a leading nine nominations to its name, the odds are most certainly in this movie’s favor for ruling the show tonight. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” This is Harry’s final time to shine at the Movie Awards. As the fourth highest-grossing picture of all time, it’s safe to say that there are more than a few fans hoping for some good old-fashioned “Deathly Hallows” domination. Best Cast should be a lock for “Potter,” if only to acknowledge the phenomenal work of scenery-chewers Alan Rickman and Ralph Fiennes. It’s neck-and-neck between Potter and Katniss for Best Hero, but we’re placing our money on the Boy Wizard. And a Movie of the Year win is not out of the question, either. It has a huge obstacle to overcome in the increasingly hot “Hunger Games,” but as Lord Voldemort learned the hard way, you can never put Potter down for the count. “The Dark Knight Rises” Fans No matter who you’re rooting for at the Movie Awards, it’s the fans who will walk away the winners — Batman fans in particular. Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman will all be on hand to present exclusive “Dark Knight Rises” footage at the show, in case you haven’t heard. Though we’re still in the dark regarding what exactly we’ll see, Movie Awards director Hamish Hamilton has seen the top-secret footage, and he’s “telling you, it’s good.” Expect this footage to be the talk of the town (or at least the Twitterverse) long after the show ends. Shirtless-Men Enthusiasts Another someone with an outside shot at dominating the Movie Awards conversation tonight is Channing Tatum, who finds himself nominated for multiple awards, including Best Kiss and Best Hero. Don’t count on him winning either of those awards — the former is all “Twilight,” and the latter is a battle of the bows and wands — but who needs a Golden Popcorn statuette when you have abs to put Taylor Lautner to shame? There’s growing buzz that Tatum is going to bring some of his “Magic Mike” shirtless magic to Movie Awards viewers tonight, so if you’re a fan of hot men sans clothes, you might be this year’s biggest winner. Russell Brand Finally, hats off to the man who’s going to keep the trains powered by farts tonight: Russell Brand, host of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. Mark Wahlberg’s threats aside, we’re very confident Brand is going to absolutely tear it up at the show this year, if his past performances as host of the VMAs are any indication. Besides, Brand is allowed to do whatever he wants tonight — group sex , anyone? Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote for Best Hero and Best Movie now! The “Movie Awards Punk’d Pre-Party” starts at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards live tonight at 9 p.m. ET! Related Videos Behind The Scenes At The 2012 MTV Movie Awards

‘Hunger Games’ Meets Robert Pattinson In Movie Brawl Finals

RPattz’s indie ‘Cosmopolis’ takes on the fresh franchise in MTV Movie Brawl 2012 — vote now! By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate It started three weeks ago with a simple question: What is truly the must-see movie of 2012? Everyone’s got an opinion. Maybe you’re a “Hobbit” guy who can’t believe that, after years of delay, Peter Jackson is set to deliver the first part of his series in December. Or perhaps you’re a “Dark Knight Rises” gal with an insatiable itch to see how Christopher Nolan wraps up his Batman trilogy. Or, hey, possibly you’re thinking, “Screw all these studio-driven tentpoles! I can’t wait for indies like ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ to hit and show us Emma Watson in her first post-‘Harry Potter’ role!” But we got to wondering: What’s the consensus pick? What’s the collective viewpoint across the globe? So we launched MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , a fan-driven tournament to determine the year’s most-anticipated film. Millions of votes have been cast thus far. The debate has echoed from the pages of MTV News to the updates of the Twitterverse and beyond. Now just two movies remain: “The Hunger Games” and “Cosmopolis.” One is a fresh franchise with a huge fanbase. The other is an indie drama featuring one of the biggest stars on the planet. And less than one day into the action — with hundreds of thousands of votes already cast — it’s anybody’s guess what is going to happen. And we couldn’t be more psyched about it. As of this writing ,”Hunger Games” is up by less than 2 percent over Robert Pattinson’s “Cosmopolis.” It’s been an unlikely run for RPattz’s cerebral drama, having entered the Brawl bracket as a #4 seed after an impressive run in the play-in round. From there, “Cosmopolis” dispatched another Pattinson flick in “Bel Ami,” then shockingly dispatched his own “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” “The Dark Knight Rises” proved to be no match for “Cosmopolis,” as well, and so the movie came to face “Hunger Games.” Jennifer Lawrence’s film, which hits theaters in March, was a front-runner from the beginning, and it has not disappointed. Both “John Carter” and Daniel Radcliffe’s “Woman in Black” could not trip up the win-at-all-costs run of “Hunger Games.” So we wonder: Can Pattinson accomplish what no other star has so far in the Brawl? Can he fell the mighty “Hunger Games”? All will become clear when the polls close Monday at 5 p.m. Until then, the vote totals are being closely guarded. It’s up to the fans to keep voting for their fave flick and to make sure their must-see movie is crowned the champion of MTV Movie Brawl 2012. Vote For Your Favorite Upcoming Flick In MTV’s Movie Brawl 2012! What are you waiting for? “Hunger Games” and “Cosmopolis” need your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart.
