Valerie Harper Sued For Hiding Brain Cancer Diagnosis, Denies Allegation

Valerie Harper is being sued by a New York playwright who says she ruined his play by withholding her brain cancer diagnosis, a claim she says is outrageous. He wants $2 million as a result of her alleged deception, while she insists no one was more surprised at the return of her cancer than Valerie herself. In the lawsuit, filed last December, Broadway bigwig Matthew Lombardo accused the Mary Tyler Moore Show star , 74, of keeping her illness a secret. This caused her to unexpectedly drop out of the 2013 play, Looped , which he says he invested big time in with the understanding she would perform. But in new court documents, the Dancing With the Stars alum claims she believed she was in cancer remission, having had successfully undergone surgery. She says she had no idea the cancer had returned and spread to her brain until January 2013, a month after she had re-signed her contract for Looped . She also disputes Lombardo’s claim that she was hospitalized for a recurrence of her cancer in January 2012, causing her to miss the day’s rehearsal. The star’s longtime husband, producer Tony Cacciotti, “took Ms. Harper to the hospital from the rehearsal because he feared that she had a stroke.” Harper is requesting the suit be dismissed, and that Lombardo pay legal fees. Sadly, the actress is still suffering from terminal leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, but she says she remains “cautiously optimistic” about the future. Celebrities Who Beat Cancer Open Slideshow 1. Harry Potter Spinoff Talk Heats Up, Warner Bros. Trademarks Multiple Titles

More magical news today out of Hollywood: With JK Rowling announcing last month that she’ll be writing a Harry Potter spinoff film based on the fictional Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” movie fans now have strong reasons to believe that many more Potter-based movies are also on the way. Harry Potter Spinoff: Confirmed! Warner Bros. has trademarked not only the title “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” but also a couple other names: “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” “Quidditch Through the Ages” Both written and published as a spinoff novels by Rowling, while the studio has also trademarked Quidditch team names Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons and Kenmare Kestrels. What do these moves mean for the future of the Harry Potter universe? Possibly nothing. A trademark certainly doesn’t mean that a movie is on the way. All we know for certain at the moment is that Newt Scamander will serve as the protagonist in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” though no release or production date has been set for the spinoff film.

Bill Nye Eliminated on Dancing With the Stars, Goes Out in Style

Bill Nye the Science Guy was given the boot on last night’s Dancing With the Stars results show, but at least he went out in style with his final routine. After ignoring doctors’ orders to stay off his torn quadricep, the 57-year-old opted instead to dance a modified “jazz” routine to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” It was … awkward. And ridiculous, yet brave and sort of awesome. Bill Nye and Tyne Stecklein – Dancing with the Stars Karina Smirnoff spoke of the “superb job” Bill’s partner Tyne Stecklein did at constructing a story and dance around essentially a man with a peg leg. It was pretty impressive, if you look at it from Tyne’s end. Despite Nye’s best efforts at wooing the judges with his strange, hobbled sex-robot routine, the couple was the second to be voted off the show in Season 17. Do you think Bill deserved to go home last night?   Yes. America (and the judges) got it right. No! Should’ve been Christina! No! Should’ve been Brant! Valerine Harper: Cancer Near Remission For Dancing With the Stars Cast Member

Valerie Harper went public with a terminal brain cancer diagnosis in March, but it is now close to remission, says the soon-to-be Dancing With the Stars cast member. Valerie Harper To Be On DWTS Despite Brain Cancer Valerine Harper was given three months to live six months ago. Not only has she survived, she’s shown no signs of slowing down, and she figures to be a competitive member of the latest DWTS ensemble. In fact, according to her doctor, the 74-year-old actress is “getting pretty close to remission.” But, as Dr. Jeremy Rudnick explained on Today , it will still be fatal. “It defies the odds,” he said of Valerie’s response to chemotherapy as well as alternative treatments, but warns that the cancer will “develop resistance to the therapy.” “It’s not a matter of if (the cancer becomes resistant), it’s a matter of when.” “Going from having three months to live, or less; we’re into our sixth month, and now there’s even hope beyond right now we’re looking at,” he said. And Harper interjected cheerily, “We’re looking at Christmas!” “Life is about buying time,” Rudnick added on the NBC show. Harper added,”Exactly … That’s what I always say.” We can’t wait to see her on the new season.

Valerie Harper may have incurable brain cancer, but she says she’s feeling great. “I’m alive. I’m feeling good. I’m trying to live every moment as much as I can.” Harper tells USA Today “the phone has not stopped” since her announcement. “Or the texts, or the e-mails.
