After "Oxycontin": Gays in Uganda, African Soccer and a South Dakota Reservation

Tonight at 9pm on Current you can watch “The OxyContin Express,” our Vanguard episode about prescription-drug abuse. We're so honored to have been recognized most recently with a Peabody Award for the piece. In our upcoming season, I'll be reporting three very different stories from three very different locations: + A Lakota reservation in South Dakota: + Uganda and the controversy around a law that would criminalize homosexuality and in some cases make it punishable by death: + And I traveled to Ghana, Morocco, Brussels and Paris for a story about the trafficking of African soccer players to Europe: You can watch as we put together the episodes at the Vanguard Blog. What 60 Minutes Missed in Uganda AIDS Story

This past weekend, 60 Minutes aired a story about the $15 billion anti-AIDS initiative known as PEPFAR, the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which was launched by President Bush in 2003. For the story, correspondent Bob Simon traveled to Uganda, a country that has lost more than a million lives to AIDS and has since benefited greatly from PEPFAR. But I noticed one glaring omission in the piece. When Simon interviewed Pastor Martin Ssempa, one of Uganda’s most well-known Christian ministers, he failed to mention Ssempa’s role in the country’s controversial anti-gay bill. It’s true that Ssempa has been one of Uganda’s leading HIV activists and that over the years his preaching of an abstinence-only approach has made him a darling of many US evangelicals. But more recently, Ssempa has become the Pied Piper of Uganda’s anti-gay campaign, leading rallies and protests to push the legislation through. We're in the process of editing the piece we shot on Uganda's anti-gay bill for the upcoming season of Vanguard. And where the two stories intersect is over the question of what effect anti-gay legislation might have on the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Many health care professionals we spoke to worry that the bill could have a very negative impact on whatever strides the country has made to combat HIV/AIDS. We’ll be exploring this question and more in the upcoming documentary. Follow the Vanguard team on Twitter. Holy Indian River Is Now a Sewer: Vanguard Reports

Recently I returned from a nearly month-long reporting trip about shit. If you've been following the Vanguard blog, you've probably read and seen some of the shit (literally) we'd been filming. Here's another clip from that trip. It takes place in New Delhi, India along the once-mighty, holy Yamuna River, which has today become a virtual open sewer. We took a short ride on this toxic, bubbling river and stepped off onto the riverbank… Where we were surrounded by shit. Here's a little preview of the long, sometimes excruciating month I spent on the road. Vanguard is Current TV's original documentary series. Adam Lambert to Perform at GLAAD Awards

Adam Lambert is scheduled to perform at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on April 17. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has tapped the American Idol runner-up for one of its biggest annual events. Aside from Adam Lambert , many big names will also be on hand. At the ceremony, Wanda Sykes will be presented the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, given to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community. Drew Barrymore will be honored with the Vanguard Award, after portraying the lesbian daughter of a widower (Robert De Niro) in the 2009 film Everybody’s Fine and joining public protests when the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8. Other guests and presenters scheduled to attend include the Glee cast, Tom Ford (A Single Man), Eric Dane ( Grey’s Anatomy ), Jason Lewis (Brothers & Sisters), and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), plus Chaz Bono , and Benjamin Bratt (La Mission). Also appearing will be Clementine Ford (The L Word) and from the reality TV universe, the incredible Countess LuAnn de Lesseps (Real Housewives of New York City). Sounds like an entertaining, attractive roster.

A rare day: The Vanguard team all in one room

For the first time in more than two months, this week the entire Vanguard team was in one room at the same time. I had just gotten back from Indonesia and India (see above). Mariana had returned fewer than 24 hours before from Paris after more than six weeks abroad reporting two different stories. Christof's been in the U.S. South and then up in Canada, but returned this weekend. And Kaj had just one day between trips reporting from some of the most high-security prisons in America. There we were, all in some room — and I didn't get a photo. Though a rare occurrence when we're all in production, I swear we were all there together. A couple of highlights from our debriefs: I shared the story of how just moments after shooting this video from the middle of a river of shit, I completely lost it. I'd stupidly decided to make myself a protein shake that day — and used tap water. Despite the fact that I was in India to report on the prevalence of unclean water. Still, as Kaj pointed out to our colleagues conferencing in from San Francisco, I was telling this story while eating lunch: sushi. Mariana's trip to Africa, then Europe, then back to Africa, then back to Europe, was interrupted by not one but two epic luggage fails on the part of Lufthansa — and one very public Twitter campaign to reuinte her with her bags (and tripod). Kaj can't talk about his next piece other than to say that a trip to a high-security prison nearly landed him in contempt of court. And to promise he'll be using Twitter more now. And Christof is back from a very intense round of reporting, painfully without his own camera in hand. It's a story we've been careful to talk too much about — unlike my relentness documenting of every pile of shit in India I filmed — because the subjects were, even for the kind of story Vanguard so often goes after, particularly reluctant to speak with the media. We want to tell you — and show you — as much as we can about the next season of Vanguard, even as we're still in the field or back here in LA piecing the shows together. You tell me — what do you want to know? (Follow the full team at Twitter as we all scatter back across the globle.) added by: Adam_Yamaguchi

A river of sh*t: World Water Day

Today is World Water Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness around water issues – scarcity, access and quality. It’s probably the one day each year we all really stop to think about how to better manage this precious resource.

River of Sh*t: Adam’s Vanguard Update

I'm currently working on a story for the next season of Vanguard about toilets, or the lack thereof, in much of the world. Our journey starts here in India, which has the largest toiletless population. We went on a river ride, which was the most disgusting smell ever. I threw up, and was sick for about 24 hours.
