9 Revelations from WETA’s Chimp-Filled Rise of the Planet of the Apes Preview

The folks at WETA Digital took to the internet Wednesday to unveil an in-depth first look at this August’s franchise reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes in a live-stream chat, confirming Charlton Heston’s worst fears: Hordes of damn, dirty (and pretty photorealistic) CG apes will definitely be invading the streets of San Francisco this summer. The first Rise of the Planet of the Apes trailer will premiere on Apple/iTunes Thursday, no doubt featuring more of the impressive visual effects shared in the preview; hit the jump for the nine most compelling insights, revelations, and concept art peeks revealed by the WETA effects team and star Andy Serkis.

Count the Comedy Stars in Matt Walsh’s Improv Stoner Comedy High Road

Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder Matt Walsh ( Outsourced ) called on a dozen of his fellow comedians to act in his directorial debut High Road , an improvised film about a weed dealer (James F. Pumphrey) torn between his “career,” his musical aspirations, and his pregnant girlfriend (Abby Elliott). Hit the trailer after the jump and see how many of your favorite comedy players, including veterans of The State, Saturday Night Live , and Walsh’s short-lived series Players show up in the lo-fi indie comedy. Deadline reports that visual effects veteran Tim Miller ( X-Men, X2, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ) has graduated to the helm of Fox’s Deadpool , which is currently being written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. But with its star currently carrying another studio’s comic book tent pole ( Green Lantern ), how soon will Deadpool happen with Reynolds — and will it be the Deadpool movie that Reynolds wants to make?

VIDEO: So That’s Why Hereafter Was Nominated for an Oscar

Perhaps in response to all those people left stymied by Hereafter ‘s Oscar nomination for visual effects (especially when Tron: Legacy got shut out of the category, poor thing), Warner Bros. have released a shot-by-shot reel showing how VFX supervisor Michael Owens and Scanline VFX put together that nine-minute opening tsunami sequence. And when you see how the live-action parts came together combining CG, green screen, water tanks, and on-location photography — well, “Oscar-nominated Hereafter ” doesn’t sound so silly anymore.

Oscars Expand Visual Effects Category

So much for the bake-off! The Oscars used to release a list of seven semi-finalists for the Visual Effects category, eventually trimming the contenders down to a measly three nominees (which squeezed out films like Terminator Salvation, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen , and 2012 last year), but now that virtually every summer film has become an FX smorgasbord, the Academy has relented and expanded the nominee field to five.
