Lady Gaga Calls Terry Richardson Book ‘Completely Unfiltered’

‘I didn’t hold anything back,’ Gaga tells MTV News about upcoming photo book. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News Late last month, Lady Gaga announced she was teaming with photographer/provocateur Terry Richardson to release a hefty coffee-table book, one that features more than 350 photos of the singer taken by Richardson over the course of 10 months. The two have worked together — with appropriately pulse-quickening results — several times in the past, most notably a September 2010 cover shoot for Vogue Hommes Japan that served as a sneak peek of the now-infamous meat dress she wore to the 2010 VMAs, and a clothing-optional campaign for Supreme in February 2011. But if you thought those shots were shocking, well, get ready for the duo’s book, which, as Gaga told MTV News on Monday night in New York, will push things even further. “Terry was with me for [almost] a whole year, and, gosh, I didn’t hold anything back from Terry … he was with me every minute, every moment,” she said. “It’s completely unfiltered. He has photographs of me waking up in the morning, brushing my teeth, in the bathroom, in the bathtub, the shower. And the thing about Terry, if you know anything about his photography, is that nothing is staged; I mean, that’s sort of what he is renowned for. He can get you to do things and he can capture things that no one can ever capture. “What I love so much about Terry is that he thinks everything is so beautiful. I’m always, ‘Oh Terry, get out of here,’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, it’s so beautiful, let me just shoot it,’ ” she continued. “I felt so comfortable with Terry. I love him so much. He’s a really close friend, and I feel really honored that he traveled [with me].” Gaga said the self-titled book (which hits stores November 22) not only showcases her whirlwind life — it follows her from the main stage of Lollapalooza to her Maine rally to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” to the final shows of her Monster Ball Tour in Mexico City — but the lives of her ultra-dedicated fans too. That was as much a goal as the unfettered access was. And, from the sound of things, the book manages to accomplish both. “My favorite thing, honestly, is that [Richardson] loved the fans. He shot the fans the same way he shot me: with no pretense. No ‘Well, she’s put out records and they haven’t.’ None of that. The music was all of ours,” she said. “He would come backstage and he would say, ‘Oh my God, the fans! ‘ And I’d say, ‘I know … I know what you just photographed.’ And he’d say, ‘Baby, wow! ‘ And then he’d film me, like, peeing in a cup and, like, ridiculous things.” Related Photos A Day In The Life Of Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s Vogue Hommes Japan Meat Suit Offends PETA

‘Flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal,’ organization says of Japanese magazine cover. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga on the October 2010 cover of Vogue Hommes Japan Photo: Terry Richardson/ Conde Nast Right about now, one can only imagine how ripe that meat suit Lady Gaga donned for a cover shoot by Terry Richardson for Vogue Hommes Japan is getting. But PETA thought it stunk from the very beginning. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals slammed Gaga for her latest sartorial head turner, in which she modeled a skimpy bikini made out of steaks, with another rib eye propped on her blond tresses for good measure. “No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. “Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that’s the look they were going for, they achieved it.” Newkirk told the New York Daily News that “Lady Gaga’s job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body.” The criticism is a bit of a turn-about in the Gaga/PETA relationship . The organization praised Gaga — who is nominated for a record 13 MTV VMAs — in December for setting a faux polar bear coat on fire in her “Bad Romance” video and again in January for adding vegan hot dogs to her tour rider. And they loved when Gaga showed up in Kermit the Frog outfit to a German television interview last year, explaining that it was her commentary on not wearing fur. The Vogue issue is the same one in which Gaga poses as her male alter ego , Jo Calderone, a brown-haired mechanic from Sicily, for an alternate cover. In the accompanying interview, Calderone claims to be Gaga’s good buddy and occasional friend-with-benefits. “I met her at a shoot [photographer] Nick Knight was doing,” Calderone told the mag. “She’s f—in’ beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, ‘Don’t be, baby, you were born this way.’ I took her out after. The rest is private.” What do you think of Lady Gaga’s meat bikini? Lady Gaga Book Shows Monster Ball Behind The Scenes

Photographer Terry Richardson follows singer everywhere, Gaga tells Vogue Hommes Japan. By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News Dressing up as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, isn’t the only surprise Lady Gaga has in store for fans in the upcoming issue of Vogue Hommes Japan. The singer, who is decked out in a string of raw meat with an open mouth on an alternate cover of the mag, dished about an upcoming Monster Ball book with photographer Terry Richardson and incorporating her artistic vision with another photographer, Steven Klein, on her “Alejandro” clip. “He wanted to do a book about the Monster Ball,” she says in the magazine, which hit stands Sunday. “He wanted to shoot me backstage, not onstage, and look at who I am offstage. He’s on the bus with me. He just follows me everywhere. He’ll photograph me when I’m changing — those quick changes during the show. And sometimes I’ll have to pee during the show, and I’m always screaming, ‘Terry, get out!’ ” But Gaga believes that Richardson remains keen on keeping the project full of candid moments, saying, “And he’ll be saying, ‘It’s so beautiful. You’re so punk!’ If only my fans knew I was peeing in a beer cup backstage.” Whether it’s her red-carpet fashion or the outfits donned during her everlasting Monster Ball Tour, the singer has always had an eye for pushing the fashion envelope . Things were no different when she had the opportunity to work on her “Alejandro” video with another critically acclaimed photographer: Steven Klein. “We are both very strong-willed, and we both have very specific visions,” she said. “And I knew his specific vision and he knew mine so that it was like tugging at a rope together.” But Mother Monster has ended up tying what she calls “a beautiful knot” with Klein despite their creative differences. “I wanted to bring him out of his comfort zone, and he wanted to bring me out of mine,” she explained. “I think what made the ‘Alejandro’ video so successful was getting Steven to look at pop choreography and my aesthetic in putting things that are really interesting of how to sell messages and metaphors into a pop landscape, so it suddenly becomes universal and means something completely different. And him stripping me down, taking off all my makeup, no eyelashes, no liner, saying ‘I’m cutting all of your hair off’ and not tanned. … For me, I was hyperventilating, but it did force me to be myself.” Being a pop star who takes her image by the reins only makes Gaga comparable to her idols of earlier decades, she says. “Everybody knew about it. It wasn’t like you had to do the research or pull the references back then. It seemed innately part of who everybody was,” she said, comparing herself to pop stars from the ’70s. “The art and the fashion and the music world were all intertwined, and I guess that is the world that I live in today just through who I truly am.” Are you excited for Gaga’s upcoming project with Terry Richardson? Lady Gaga Poses As Her Male Alter Ego

Gaga is virtually unrecognizable as ‘Jo Calderone’ in Vogue Hommes Japan. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Peter Wafzig/Getty Images Lady Gaga has had some eye-catching magazine covers — she’s appeared wearing everything from lingerie to pretty much nothing at all. And for her latest, she’s bound to have lots of people talking once again. Gaga posed as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, for her gender-bending covers for Vogue Hommes Japan, out September 5. On one cover, Gaga, as Calderone, wears her hair like Elvis Presley and rocks a white shirt and black trousers. Another version simply shows a close-up of Calderone’s face, seen mostly in shadow. The covers were posted to Gaga’s stylist Nicola Formichetti ‘s website, along with interview bites that Gaga conducted as Calderone, who is purportedly from Sicily. He says in the September issue, “[My occupation is] mechanic for my dad’s business. This is the first time I’ve had my picture taken. Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken.” The interview also teases Calderone’s dream to own his own mechanic shop. “I’d love to own my own car shop. I have a bunch of my own ‘muscle’ cars,” he reveals. “Maybe if I take some more pictures, I can afford it.” The photos first hit the Internet months ago and the speculation was in fact that it was Gaga on the cover. The shoot was styled by Formichetti and shot by Nick Knight, who apparently introduced Calderone to Gaga. “I met her at a shoot Nick Knight was doing,” he recalls. “She’s f—in’ beautiful, and funny, and interesting. I was a little nervous for Nick to start shooting. She said, ‘Don’t be baby, you were born this way.’ I took her out after. The rest is private.” What do you think of Gaga’s Jo Calderone photos?
