Weekday Vegetarian: Mushroom Dumplings in Vegetable Broth

Photo: Kelly Rossiter We’ve had some brutally cold weather over the past few days, enough so that I was cooking from my pantry rather than leaving the house. And when it’s that cold you really want something warming and comforting. Hauling stuff out of my refrigerator, I came up with enough ingredients to make mushroom dumplings. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian: Mashed Potato, Rutabega and Parsnip Casserole

Photo: Kelly Rossiter My husband is involved with an non-profit organization in Ontario that preserves historic buildings. Every year they have a silent auction as a fundraiser and one of the things people bid on is dinner for four at our house. Everything I serve is from Ontario, down to the wines, so I usually suggest to purchasers that dinner in the spring or early summer will provide a bit more choice in terms of produce. This year our guests chose to have dinner in December, so that meant root vegetables would be on the menu…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian: Pinto Bean Mole Chili

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I’ve tried lots of vegetarian chilies over the years, but I seldom find them really satisfying. My book club was having a chocolate themed dinner and I found this recipe for Pinto Bean Mole Chili and decided to try it. Everybody loved it, and they ate the entire pot, along with all the other main course offerings that people brought…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Turning Printed Words into (Non-Literary) Works of Art

A recycled-paper necklace by Devi Chand. Photo: hippie kingdom . Feeling the weight of a book in my hands, flipping back through its pages to re-read a particularly crucial or well-written paragraph, using a bookmark to hold my place while I ponder what I’ve just read — those are some of the things I still love about reading. But with e-books fast on the rise, it’s time to think, however reluctantly, about what will happ… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lunchbox Heats and Cools Your Meal with Solar Power

Images via Yanko Design For a hot or cold meal on the go, this high-tech lunchbox concept is an interesting solution. Using a giant flower-shaped fan with netting somehow made of solar cells, lunchbox captures energy to heat and cool various compartments storing your different dishes. It’s vaporware, but it sounds cooler than these other very real lunchbox ideas. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian Thanksgiving: Harissa

Photo: Kelly Rossiter In addition to the gravy for the tofu cake , I wanted to make a sauce for the vegetable tagine . The tagine has lots of spice in it, but it’s not at all hot. My son is a great afficiando of hot foods, so this was an easy way to accommodate people who’s tolerance of heat might not as great as his. Just a spoonful was all that was needed for most of th… Read the full story on TreeHugger
