The organization was founded in 2005 and raises funds for various humanitarian and environmental causes. In 2005, they donated to Hurricane Katrina, in 2009, the donated to White Ribbon’s Alliance in Tanzania and in 2019 for Haitian. In 2011 they donated to the Japan Red Cross for the earthquake and tsunami. In 2018, the organization donated to Time’s Up Race to Equality. To top it all off, a 54-year old Civil Rights Activist came out as the leader of one of America’s Biggest Neo-Nazi groups with plans to destroy it from the inside. James Hart Stern has been named as the director and president of National Socialist Movement (NSM) after taking over for their former leader Jeff Schoep. Stern told WVIR that he had “no official or casual relationship with this group prior to February 2019,” and therefore cannot be held responsible for their actions. In a video on his website , Stern stated, “I have personally targeted eradicating the [Ku Klux Klan] and the National Socialist Movement, which are two organizations here in this country which have all too long been given privileges they don’t deserve. It is the decision of the National Socialist Movement to plead liable to all causes of actions listed in the complaint against it.” The Nationalist group is being sued for conspiracy and negligence following their involvement in the 2017 “Unite The Right” rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia. No word on how Stern rose to power but…this should be interesting to watch unfold.
Source: Dia Dipasupil / Getty Barry Jenkins Says He’s Not An Activist The 91st Annual Academy Awards are tonight and while we’re happy to see ‘Black Panther,’ Regina King, Mahershala Ali, ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ Spike Lee, Ruth E. Carter and Barry Jenkins nominated across a number of categories we’re convinced that ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ should have been recognized as a Best Picture nominee. In a year that saw a diverse range of black films – ‘Black Panther,’ ‘BlacKkKlansman,”The Hate U Give’ and ‘Sorry To Bother You’ were among our favorites – ‘If Beale Street Could Talk,’ was, as Regina King called it at one screening attended by our editors, ‘a visual symphony.’ The film truly struck a chord, pun intended, with our Sr. Director of Content Janeé Bolden, who spoke with Barry Jenkins in a one-on-one back in October, just before midterm elections, in a conversation that touched on the magnitude of reimagining James Baldwin for the big screen, the power of revealing the intensity of love between two dark-skinned lead actors and the importance of Regina King’s character as a symbol of black motherhood. The first question Janeé asked though, was about the music, which speaks so deeply to the emotions conveyed in the film that it may as well have been another character. Janeé Bolden: Can you talk about the score for the film and the song selection? The film was visually stunning, but the music played such an important role. Barry Jenkins: “Nicholas Britell who did the score for Moonlight did the score for this film. It’s interesting, we were in Belgium together at this composers conference at this music Q&A and this other composer said “Oh wait, you never heard Nick’s music before you did ‘Moonlight?’” I didn’t realize it, but it was like, no I didn’t — it was just a vibe. What happened was, as we watched, the film tells us what the music should feel like. We started out with this idea of jazz — you know brass, saxophone, French horn, things like that and as Nick started writing music in that way, we actually realized it wanted it to be strings but as brass compositions, so we organically began the film playing basically as a chamber orchestra but with jazz compositions, and by the end of the film we are playing with jazz instruments these orchestral compositions. It was a really organic process and what happens is, as you cut the film, when you watch it, the music is meant to feel like Tish is feeling, the way Fonnie is feeling, so a lot of the way the score ends and begins is dictated by the characters. And then with the needle drops, with the songs that play, I always just have in my head what the characters are vibing with. We’re just mixing and matching, put things in, you know Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Al Green, all those just things felt appropriate with the time period for these characters. Janeé Bolden: The film does a great justice to the book and I almost imagined that if James Baldwin could have seen this film he’d have been extremely happy with the result. Did you feel pressure to make the movie as Baldwin would have? Barry Jenkins: That was part of it for sure. Not that I was asking myself, ‘What would Jimmy do?’ in a certain way, but it was in the back of my mind. And just knowing how much of a cultural critic he was, how engaged he was, you know he wrote film criticism, he wrote about music, it was important for me to have a soundscape that reflected the things he listened to. He actually mentions a lot of music in the book. Music that I felt wasn’t the right fit for what we were doing, but it was a nice compass to have in my head. Not everything in the film is meant to be literally faithful to the book, but to be in the same spirit. The latest cause that the “No Problem” rapper is supporting is the fight for adequate mental health care in his hometown, WSBT22 reported. He shared the news during a summit that his organization SocialWorks hosted on Thursday. There is often a stigma surrounding mental health amongst African Americans, and Bennet is aiming to change that narrative. As part of his six-figure donation, six mental health care facilities in the Cook County area will receive grants that are worth $100,000. His non-profit—which focuses on educating and empowering the youth through civic engagement and the arts—will also launch a new program dubbed “My State of Mind” that will make mental health treatment more accessible for those battling mental illness. Additionally, Bennett has pledged to donate more money to 20 Chicago Public Schools. Mental health is something that the rapper has personally battled with. In 2017, he publicly spoke about his struggles with anxiety. “Anxiety is now something that I’m just getting exposed to, it’s a big conversation and idea that I’m getting introduced to now,” he said in an interview, according to NME . “For a long time that wasn’t a thing that we talked about, I don’t remember people talking about it… when I was growing up… I’m starting to get a better understanding of that part of my life.” Several celebrities are launching initiatives that are centered on mental health and overall wellness. Mari Copeny AKA Little Miss Flint was known around Flint, Michigan for her activism. She became a viral star for the letter she wrote to Barack Obama requesting a meeting about the Flint water crisis! I know this is probably an odd request but I would love for a chance to meet you or your wife,” she wrote in the letter, according to the Los Angeles Times . Copeny, who is known as “Little Miss Flint,” got the opportunity to meet the president in May 2016. T he family of an iconic Black Lives Matter activist is raising funds to bring his remains home to Charleston, South Carolina after he was gunned down in New Orleans on Tuesday. SEE ALSO: Officer Sues Black Lives Matter Activists Over Baton Rouge Police Shooting The GoFundMe campaign for Muhiyidin Moye , who preferred the last name d’Baha, had raised more than $14,000 by Wednesday morning. A woman who identified herself as d’Baha’s niece, Camille, wrote that the funds would also be used for a memorial service and funeral. It just kills him that after her incredibly inspiring speech at the Golden Globes, Winfrey received an overwhelming amount of support from many Americans for her to run for president. So naturally, he has to bring attention back to himself and let everyone know that no one can beat him at anything, including his current job for which he is laughably unqualified for. As reported by Variety , while speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump addressed the possibility of Winfrey running for president, stating: “I’ll beat Oprah. Oprah would be a lot of fun. I know her very well,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “I like Oprah. I don’t think she’s going to run,” Trump added. He again said he knows Winfrey “very well,” before repeating that he didn’t think she would run.
