Jared Loughner, who shot former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the head, killed six and wounded 12 others in a 2011 rampage, will never be a free man again. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole this morning. After listening to some of his victims berate him for damaging their lives in the Arizona massacre, Loughner, 24, received the sentence in a Tucson federal court. A series of emotional confrontations preceded the sentencing. After a woman spoke about the pain of losing her husband to Loughner’s bullet, Giffords, who was in the courtroom, turned to her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly. She kissed him on the head, according to reports. When it was their turn to confront the shooter, Kelly and Giffords stood and looked directly at Jared Loughner. It was the first time the two had been face-to-face. The defendant returned the couple’s gaze as Kelly went on to explain how the bullet had forever changed his wife’s life, but couldn’t damage her spirit. Giffords resigned from Congress earlier this year.
Can a politician really relate in just one week? Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton tried to step out of his comfort zone and see what it’s like to live off of $29 a week through the states SNAP Program …and the man didn’t cheat once! Claiming to have lost a few lbs due to lack of food, he’s passionate about fixing the low level of poverty in his state. Arizona has more than 1.1 million folks on food assistance and the US has more than 46 million that are accounted for. This week I joined staff and board members from the Arizona Community Action Association (ACAA), the Valley of the Sun United Way and others in the community in the week-long SNAP Experience when we’ll limit total food purchases to the weekly budget of a typical SNAP participant: $4.16 a day. That’s about $29 a week for one person and $97 a week for a family of four. The SNAP Experience, through which participants also will be asked to blog about its impact, is scheduled Sept. 15-21. September is Hunger Awareness Month. With American poverty levels approaching the highest levels since 1965, 1.1 million Arizonans rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) to feed their families. Identifying, in a concrete way, with struggling families is an important exercise for any leader. By walking in the shoes of those who depend on the SNAP program, I certainly feel like I’ve gained critical perspective as a policymaker. From a broader perspective, I’m starting to think about all the other challenges families on food stamps (SNAP) must face at the same time they are stretching their food benefit. Census data in 2010 showed Arizona had the second highest poverty rate in the nation with 21.2% of its citizens living in poverty. The national figure was 14.3 percent. We’ve improved since then, but we’re still in the 10-poorest states category. Worse, women raising children alone here aren’t doing well. More than 45% of mothers raising children by themselves are in poverty. That’s why turning this economy around is so important. The best “program” for any struggling family is a job that pays a living wage. That’s what I’m focusing on for every Phoenix family. We’re going to give the Mayor credit for making the effort and spreading awareness on the issue. If every politician was required to do this, do you think we’d see more efforts and less b*tching about the needy, struggling, low-to middle-income classes? Images via facebook/shutterstock

Who knew living in Arizona could make you rich?! Glendale Arizona Store Sells 6 Winning Lottery Tickets In One Day Six winning $1 million Powerball tickets were bought at a QuikTrip gas station in Glendale. Only one person has claimed their ticket since Wednesday’s drawing. The five other tickets are out there, somewhere. “What we do know is these are not Quick Pick tickets,” said Karen Bach with the Arizona Lottery. “They are individually selected numbers on a play slip or, in this case, multiple play slips.” Bach said this is definitely a unique situation, but the tickets are legitimate. Moore plays the lottery often and suspects something bizarre happened at the gas station. “I don’t know if they had just a general slip that they filled out and someone else used it,” he said. “The odds of that are significantly high.” 3TV spoke to the manager of the QuikTrip. Off camera he told us there is only one winner. A man bought six tickets with five identical numbers. However, the Powerball numbers were each different. It’s not the same story we got from a lottery official. “We can’t speculate,” Bach said. “We do not know who has those tickets in their possession. Until we have them we have no way of knowing.” The QuikTrip will get $30,000 for their share of the six winning tickets when all of the tickets are claimed. Since January, there have been 10 winning $1 million second-prize Powerball tickets sold in Arizona. GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney enjoyed a tremendous victory Tuesday after winning both the Arizona and Michigan Primaries. “We didn’t win by a lot, but we won by enough, and that’s what counts,” Romney said of his Arizona victory to the cheering crowd. Romney also thanked Michigan voters for not listening to “pundits and pollsters” who were “ready to count us out.” Watch a portion of the speech… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : The Blaze Discovery Date : 29/02/2012 04:52 Number of articles : 2
Mesa, Arizona (CNN) – Mitt Romney’s top campaign advisers were pleased with their candidate’s performance in Wednesday night’s GOP presidential debate hosted by CNN and the Arizona Republican Party–and so were top Democratic Party and Obama re-election campaign officials. During the debate, Romney defended Arizona’s controversial 2010 illegal immigration law, saying, “You know, I think Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Political Ticker Discovery Date : 23/02/2012 08:10 Number of articles : 2
As has become our post-debate tradition, here’s a highlight reel of last night’s Republican CNN gathering in Arizona … featuring Ron Paul and only Ron Paul. He may be marginalized by the mainstream media, but he’s shown no signs of quitting the GOP race, and was dishing it out left and right Wednesday. Like a boss. In particular, Paul took it to Rick Santorum so hard over his federal spending record, some are speculating that he made an alliance with Mitt Romney . It’s probably just that – speculation – but make no mistake, the Texas Congressman was on his game at last night’s Republican debate . Take a look: Ron Paul Highlights: Arizona Republican Debate
