GOP Primary Results: Rick Santorum Wins Alabama & Mississippi; Gingrich Second, Romney Third

Rick Santorum scored another two wins in the race for the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night, indicating a potentially protracted race ahead. The former U.S. Senator won the Alabama and Mississippi primaries , overcoming the financial advantages of Mitt Romney and Southern allegiances to Newt Gingrich. Santorum strengthened his candidacy as the GOP campaign rolls into a state-by-state delegates battle in the weeks, and very possibly months, ahead. An aggressive push by Romney to try and capitalize on the still-divided conservative electorate failed to take hold, and he finished third in both states. “We did it again,” Santorum said, addressing jubilant supporters in Louisiana, which votes next week. “The time is now for conservatives to pull together.” The outcome of the Alabama and Mississippi primaries bolstered Santorum’s argument that he should emerge as the final GOP competitor to Romney. But Gingrich, who finished a close second in both states, noted that he earned about as many delegates as his rivals, and pledged to continue on. “The elite media’s efforts to convince the nation that Mitt Romney is inevitable just collapsed,” Gingrich said, addressing a subdued crowd here in Birmingham. “If you’re the front-runner and you come in third, you’re not much of a front-runner.” Yet Romney may end up no worse than when he started in the delegate count, which will ultimately decide the nominee (if he can win 50 percent or more). Early Wednesday, Romney was able to add to his delegate tally with a triumph in Hawaii’s Republican caucuses, as well as a victory in American Samoa. Mitt Romney Wins Washington State GOP Caucus

Mitt Romney won Washington state’s Republican caucuses this weekend, gaining a boost heading into Super Tuesday tomorrow, March 6, when 11 states hold contests. The choice isn’t binding. Romney won 37.6 percent of vote. He’s put together a bit of a win streak, also carrying Wyoming, Arizona and Michigan within the last week. Ron Paul edged Rick Santorum for second place with both receiving about 25 percent of the vote, with Newt Gingrich coming in fourth with 11 percent of the vote. Republican contests on March 6 include Ohio, a swing state that President Obama, a Democrat, won in 2008 and Republican President George W. Bush won in 2004. Polls there are very close, while Santorum has the edge in Oklahoma and Tennessee, and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich leads surveys in Georgia. Romney is expected to win Massachusetts, Vermont and likely Virginia. Paul will continue to be a factor everywhere, particularly in states with caucus formats. The 2012 Washington Republican Caucus results: Mitt Romney 19,111 (37.6%) Ron Paul 12,594 (24.8%) Rick Santorum 12,089 (23.8%) Newt Gingrich 5,221 (10.3%) Other 1,749 (3.4%)

Mitt Romney Wins GOP Wyoming Caucus

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has won Wyoming’s presidential caucus vote, a series of county straw polls that took place over the last three weeks. At 39 percent, Romney bested Rick Santorum (32 percent), Ron Paul (21 percent) and Newt Gingrich (8 percent). The Wyoming GOP released the results Wednesday. Like Iowa’s caucus, Wyoming’s is not binding and will in no way affect the state’s 29 delegates to the national convention, where the nominee will be formally chosen. More attention will likely be paid to Wyoming’s county conventions, held March 6-10, which will directly elect 12 delegates to the Republican National Convention. Its April state convention , which will elect another 14 delegates … none of which will be allocated (or “bound”) to any of the four remaining presidential candidate. Each will have to announce support for a candidate or “undecided.” Confused yet? Only 2,108 total votes were cast in Wyoming, the least populous U.S. state (fun fact). Nevada, the next smallest caucus to date, saw more than 30,000 GOP votes. Also like in Iowa, the precinct caucuses served another function, besides recording a presidential-preference vote: electing delegates to Wyoming’s later conventions. If Romney’s win in Wyoming is any indication, he’ll receive more backing than his rivals from Wyoming’s unbound national delegates at the GOP convention. Romney won Michigan and Arizona Tuesday. Ten states cast ballots next week, on Super Tuesday, in an increasingly important date for his three competitors.

Arizona CNN GOP Debate Highlights: Ron Paul Style!

As has become our post-debate tradition, here’s a highlight reel of last night’s Republican CNN gathering in Arizona … featuring Ron Paul and only Ron Paul. He may be marginalized by the mainstream media, but he’s shown no signs of quitting the GOP race, and was dishing it out left and right Wednesday. Like a boss. In particular, Paul took it to Rick Santorum so hard over his federal spending record, some are speculating that he made an alliance with Mitt Romney . It’s probably just that – speculation – but make no mistake, the Texas Congressman was on his game at last night’s Republican debate . Take a look: Ron Paul Highlights: Arizona Republican Debate

And Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is… Ron Paul?

Or some other lukewarm cling-monkey: “If I were feeling less generous and more cynical on this holiest of all Oscar-calendar mornings , I might say that to decipher this year’s Academy Awards contest, we need only look for inspiration to the GOP presidential race. The Artist is Mitt Romney — desperate to please, doesn’t stand for anything in particular, not especially popular with the general public, will eventually keep most of its money offshore, and, though dinged up and trash-talked, will probably cross the finish line first by default. The Descendants is Newt Gingrich (emotionally unsteady, hard on wives, doing better than expected, but probably can’t go all the way). Hugo is Rick Santorum (a little slow, doesn’t really like anything that changed in the culture in the last 80 years). And The Tree of Life is Jon Huntsman (believes in evolution, probably a little too classy for this field).” [ Grantland ]

South Carolina Republican Debate: Schizo Crowd Cheers Lots of Harsh Sound Bites!

Jon Huntsman may have gotten out just in time. In front of by FAR the most raucous crowd of any Republican debate held thus far, the five remaining GOP hopefuls squared off in South Carolina last night. Ostensibly, everybody not named Mitt Romney angled to knock the frontrunner off his pedestal. In reality, it became a game of rhetorical one-upmanship. South Carolina GOP Debate The crowd cheered their support of U.S. soldiers urinating on dead Afghan bodies and their condemnation of the Obama administration’s condemnation of it. Newt Gingrich earned a standing ovation for this quote: “Andrew Jackson knew what to do with his enemies – he killed them.” How professorial he can be. Even Romney, the most vanilla of all candidates, got into the act, saying “The right thing for Osama bin Laden was the bullet in the head that he received.” No one here’s missing Osama, but really Mitt? The audience then jeered Ron Paul for suggesting that “we should practice the Golden Rule in foreign policy.” Nice to see we boo NOT bombing people. The yelled their approval of Rick Perry saying America should “go to zero on foreign aid.” They booed Juan Williams for questioning Newt’s big janitor idea . The South Carolina primary has a reputation for being a bloodbath, and last night’s rancor showed why. Just imagine if this race were in any way close.

Justin Bieber Talks About Haters, To God

Days after getting a permanent body marker of his Lord and Savior , Justin Bieber has gone on record with his feelings about God and religion. In the latest issue of V , Justin says his faith may be private – well, except for that new tattoo – but that doesn’t make it any less real or important. “A lot of people who are religious, I think they get lost,” Bieber tells the magazine. “They go to church just to go to church. I’m not trying to disrespect them, but for me, I focus more on praying and talking to Him. I don’t have to go to church.” An interesting take. Bieber also compares himself to undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather, but fortunately for any personal reasons . “Now that I’m on top, everyone wants to bring me down,” he says. “Everyone’s trying to tug at me and take my spot. Like Floyd Mayweather, he’s the best boxer in the world. Now he is a champion. Every time he goes to a fight now, people are like, ‘He’s going to lose this time.'” Hmmm… We’re not really familiar with these critics that are supposedly aiming to take Justin down, the guy is really as beloved as any celebrity out there. What do you think of this combative side to Bieber?

GOP Debate: Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich Spar on Foreign Policy

It’s hard not to see how Dr. Paul got the better of this one. At last night’s GOP presidential debate in New Hampshire, Newt Gingrich was asked to respond to Ron Paul referring to has a Chicken Hawk in the past. After a long-winded, largely irrelevant response by Gingrich, Paul said that description of Newt was correct, launching into his own opinions on veterans affairs. When it comes to the power to wage war, and foreign affairs in general, Paul is unflinching in his views, even if they’re diametrically opposed to his counterparts’. Moreover, Paul reiterated that he, despite being married with children, served in the Vietnam War when drafted. Watch the heated exchange below: GOP Debate – Ron Paul vs. Newt Gingrich
