Early last week, beloved actor Luke Perry died following a massive stroke. He was only 52 years old. His daughter Sophie Perry spoke out about the sudden and tragic loss of her father. Unfortunately, hateful trolls have been shaming Sophie over her grieving process — but Sophie is hitting back. Sophie took to Instagram to clap back against the hate. “Since my dad died,” Sophie’s post begins. “I have received a lot of attention online.” “And most of it has been positive,” she acknowledges. “But of course, some people just can’t be nice.” “And I’m here to say that I did not ask for this attention,” she reminds them. Her dad was the celebrity, not her. And she certainly did not want him to die. Sophie notes: “I did not ask to be thrown into some virtual spotlight.” Sophie shared this selfie along with her post. “And while I don’t mean to offend anybody,” she writes. “I’m also not going to cater to any one else’s needs and beliefs.” “I’m 18,” she reminds them. An adult, sure, but also a teenager who has done nothing to deserve so much ire. “I swear like a sailor,” Sophie acknowledges. “And sometimes I dress like a hooker.” “And,” she notes. “I support causes and you may not.” “And most importantly,” Sophie affirms. “I am going to laugh and smile and live my normal life.” So many people misunderstand the grieving process — perhaps because they are lucky enough to have never suffered a sudden loss like this. Apparently, some trolls think that Sophie is soulless for not sitting in a window and crying where paparazzi can photograph her tears. “YES I am hurt and sad and crying and beside myself with what happened to my dad,” she states. “It’s the worst thing to ever happen in my life,” Sophie reminds her followers. “And I am torn the f–k up over it.” “But,” Sophie writes. “I’m not going to sit in my room and cry day in and day out until the internet has deemed it appropriate for me to do otherwise.” Of course not. Life goes on — it’s just different and filled with bouts of sadness. “And if you knew my dad,” Sophie notes. “You would know he wouldn’t want me to.” “So,” she reasons. “You shouldn’t either.” “So to those of you shaming me for my language and my wardrobe and most disgustingly, my grieving process,” Sophie addresses her trolls. She then suggests: “do us both the favor and just unfollow.” Remember, that is always an option! “It’s a waste of both of [our] time,” Sophie concludes. She is absolutely right. Grief is complicated. In real life, people grieve in their own ways. So just because someone is not grieving as you grieved or not grieving like television characters grieve doesn’t mean that they’re not in mourning. Sophie and her brother, Jack, are grappling with this sudden loss. But they know that their father would want them to continue on and live their lives. It would be nice if people who consider themselves his “fans” could show some common courtesy towards the ones who love him most. Source: Tim Mosenfelder / Getty BOSSIP Recap And Twitter Reactions Of #UsFirst Screening BOSSIP was fortunate enough to be in attendance last night for the very first screening of Jordan Peele ‘s new horror masterpiece Us at SCAD Show here in Atlanta. We’re not going to spoil anything for y’all, but we wanted to share our thoughts on the event as well as the enthralled social media reactions. First and foremost, Jordan, the folks at Monkeypaw Productions, Cashmere Agency, and all related parties did not even remotely attempt to obfuscate the fact that this screening was FUBU. The entire theater, sans one gray-haired white man who appeared to be an employee, was Black. Everyone. Prior to the start of the film, it was explicitly announced that Black media, influencers, film fans, and celebrities would be the first people to view Us . We were the first to see ourselves, which is very on-brand for the film’s ethos. Even the official hashtag #UsFirst was overtly on-the-nose despite the fact that Peele had previously stated that Us is not about race. But who are we kidding? Everything is about race, especially last night. It was beautiful. Again, without spoiling anything, the movie itself is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. It’s subversive while still adhering to and nodding at horror trope tradition. Jordan Peele executes these directorial ideologies with the effortless technique of Gabby Douglas on the balance beam. The pacing demands your attention. The cinematography could produce an economy of iconic movie posters. If you were creeped out by the way Jordan used The Luniz classic “I Got 5 On It” in the trailer…just you wait. Some of your favorite songs will never be the same thanks to the insidious score and maniacal music supervision. The way light is used to make Black skin leap from the screen might make you shed the same tears that Lupita does in the trailer. It’s all done brilliantly. Speaking of Lupita and brilliance, listen, ok, we all know that the Academy Awards can be full of it, but sometimes they get it right like they did with Get Out . If the Oscar folk thought that Get Out was worthy of their self-serving praise, then we can’t even imagine a world in which Lupita Amondi Nyong’o doesn’t get one of their lil’ gold trinkets for this performance. During National Women’s Month no less. Give her ALL of her things, create some more things, then give those to her as well. There aren’t enough superlatives. She’s THAT good as are M’Baku-turned-dork-dad Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Elisabeth Moss (OfFred was WILDIN’), and Tim Heidecker. Screenings took place simultaneously nationwide at SXSW, Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles. BOSSIP along with many of our Black media peers all got to see the movie at the same damn time and reactions began rolling immediately after the credits ran. It was like watching a film in Black IMAX. Fully immersive negritude. Source: Westend61 / Getty Some Local Residents Are Calling For The Teachers Involved To Be Fired Folks just won’t let go of the racist imagery of the past (and present) whether it’s Black History Month or not. According to New York Daily News , one Long Island middle school joins the list of people making light of hurtful symbols when teachers displayed a photo collage that included a picture of two nooses labeled “back to school necklaces.” Text reading “Ha ha” and “#Yes” were beside the noose pics. It all went down at Roosevelt Middle School where most of the students are people of color. Many parents and other officials were outraged by the imagery. “I was very upset about it. I mean, if they feel that way then they’re in the wrong school district,” Yvette Hudson of Roosevelt said to News12 Long Island . According to the office of the Hempstead Town Supervisors, 45 percent of Roosevelt Middle Schools’s students are Black while 55 percent are Hispanic or Latino as of the 2017-2018 school year. Some people of Hempstead tried to actually defend the actions of the teachers involved. “That may not be what they’re trying to say,” Savitri Lekhram said. “It’s probably just a joke, it probably has nothing to do with African-Americans or anything. But at the same time they can still draw that connection.” The Roosevelt School district issued a brief statement calling the situation a “personnel matter,” and they couldn’t comment further on specifics. They did say, however, “The Roosevelt School District is aware of the inappropriate conduct at the Roosevelt Middle School. The Board of Education was made aware of this incident on Thursday, February 7, 2019, an investigation was immediately initiated, and appropriate action taken. The Board of Education has zero tolerance for the display of racially offensive images.” One local pastor wasn’t satisfied with this statement however, and he wants the teachers involved to be fired. Arthur Mackey Jr. of Mount Sinai Baptist Church said a friend who works at the school notified him about the noose pictures. “Once that was brought to my attention and I saw the picture, we knew that we had to stand up and inform the public,” Mackey told NBC News . “All we’re asking is after a thorough investigation, that whoever is involved in this racist image be fired.” Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen echoed the same sentiments in a statement that was issued on Sunday. “This imagery that was on display in a Roosevelt Middle School classroom is undoubtedly racist and should not be tolerated in our Town, or any other community,” said Gillen. “The imagery is also deeply insensitive and troubling to anyone with mental health issues and those contemplating suicide.” There’s no word yet if any faculty involved has been let go.
