Dan Aykroyd Pens Heartbreaking Tribute to Former Love Carrie Fisher

Dan Aykroyd is one of those people that you don’t hear too much about, but whenever you find yourself thinking about him, your heart fills with love and light. So you might want to take a minute to alert your heart that a flood is coming. See, in case you missed it, Dan was engaged to Carrie Fisher all the way back in the early 80s. They never got married, but Dan always thought well of her. We know that last part because he wrote this absolutely moving tribute to Carrie, who passed away last month at the age of 60, and he was kind enough to share it with us all. Take some deep breaths, steady yourself, do whatever you need to do to prepare for a good cry … And here we go. “I grew up as a simple Catholic kid from a government family in Hull, Quebec,” Dan begins, “so you can imagine how much of a privilege and honour it was for me to have known this one-off, broke-the-mould woman as a great friend.” He recalls that he first met Carrie when she hosted Saturday Night Live in 1978, but that “Later, while filming Blues Brothers, Carrie and I fell in love.” “Contemplating marriage, I gave Carrie a sapphire ring,” he says, “and subsequently in the romance she gave me a Donald Roller Wilson oil painting of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil.” He says he kept the painting for years, “until it began to frighten my children.” Dan calls Carrie “one of the most brilliant and hilarious minds of our eon,” and that with her, “I was embraced in warmly human and Hollywood-glamorous emotional comfort, elegance and excitement.” One Christmas, Debbie Reynolds booked a guest house in Lake Tahoe for them, and as Dan remembers, “At that point, our love was soaring on laugh-filled exhilaration and a vibrant, wholly satisfying physical intimacy.” He refers to the trip as “Certainly one of the planet’s greatest occasions where LSD was a factor.” Unfortunately, though they “had a great time” together, they eventually split because Carrie “was also in love with Paul Simon.” “She married him,” he concludes, “but I hope she kept my ring.” Are you weeping yet? It’s all right if you are. And if you haven’t stopped weeping since Carrie Fisher died? That’s perfectly fine too. There’s just so. Much. Sadness. John Belushi Was Composed Of Equal Parts Brilliance, Bad Decisions, And Pure Cocaine

For three decades, we’ve been treated to numerous looks-back on the Dan Aykroyd -John Belushi comedy team, and the one perfect film they managed to make, 1980’s The Blues Brothers . So much dirt has already been dished over the decades that it almost feels like we know everything we’ll ever need to about the hard-partying tendencies that ultimately killed Belushi in 1982. We would be mistaken, as a new Vanity Fair profile will no doubt demonstrate that however many skeletons you think might have been unearthed, there’s always room for one or two more in the mass grave of a dead celebrity’s life story. The January issue features a new and very detailed look into the making of The Blues Brothers . Part fond remembrance, part cautionary tale, and part “Jesus H Christ, seriously. You seriously did all that,” it delivers absolutely delicious — and absolutely tragic — stories from Belushi’s friends, family and former coworkers about that film’s troubled production. We’ve culled a few choicer nuggets from the online preview: * The ’70s were even more decadent than we think. According to Dan Aykroyd, “We had a budget in the movie for cocaine for night shoots” during the making of > em> The Blues Brothers. And just like that, films like Zardoz suddenly begin to make more sense. * Belushi’s drug problem had gotten so out of hand that they actually asked Carrie Fisher – Carrie Fisher! – to keep him from consuming. I wonder if they also asked Chevy Chase to keep Dan Aykroyd from making bad decisions about the roles he intended to take during the late ’80s and early ’90s. * Belushi and Robert Downey, Jr. have a lot in common: Apparently Belushi disappeared from the set one night, and Aykroyd found him at a nearby home where, the homeowner told him, Belushi had just showed up, raided the man’s fridge like it wasn’t even a thing, and passed out on the couch. Obviously, this thing just became required, end-of-the-year reading. It goes without saying also that we’re very glad this kind of addiction is no longer enabled so blatantly. The Artist Trailer: Silent Starpower

Cannes favorite The Artist looks flashy and frothy, but that combination is perfect for Michel Hazanavicius’s sumptuous melodrama (in theaters Sept. 23) set in old Hollywood. It’s chock-full of Errol Flynn mustaches, Marcel waves, mink stoles, and the kind of magnificent Tinseltown excesses that killed everyone on E!’s Mysteries and Scandals . The new English trailer is available in HD, but let’s watch the French version to feel smart, shall we?

Dan Aykroyd Hopes Ghostbusters 3 Production Will Start ‘In the Spring’

As it turns out, the best place to get Dan Aykroyd to discuss the possibility of Ghostbusters 3 is on the radio. Like the he did previously on Chicago’s WGN radio last November , Aykroyd decided to fan the Ghostbusters flames over the air, this time with Dennis Miller. So! Is the mythical third film happening? Is Bill Murray going to appear? Who will star as the young Ghostbusters? What happened to the original Ghostbusters?

Dan Aykroyd Confirms Ghostbusters 3 Rumors

Speaking to WGN Radio Chicago, Dan Aykroyd threw some fuel to the Ghostbusters 3 fires, confirming that not only is the new movie already casting, but there a lot of “strong possiblities” being considered. Along with the return of Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray, Aykroyd revealed that they’ve also been looking at Bill Hader (great!), Anna Faris (yay!) and Eliza Dushku (must we?). While part of me is buoyed by a return to the Ghostbusters world, the part of me that saw the last Indiana Jones movie is wary of film franchises that return after a long, dormant period. [ /Film ]
