Frankly: Michelle Obama Pushes Back On “Lean In” Movement, “That S#!t Doesn’t Work”

Source: Jack Taylor / Getty Michelle Obama Pushes Back Against “Lean In” Michelle Obama let her guard drop to the floor Saturday night at the Barclays Center while speaking on the New York stop of her Becoming book tour. According to the Vanity Fair account of the event, the (forever) First Lady didn’t come to Brooklyn to offer up pie-in-the-sky platitudes or rose-tinted rhetoric to women who were looking to navigate the balance between personal and professional paths. She came armed with a bucket of the coldest water that ever ran down your back… Marriage still ain’t equal, y’all,” Michelle Obama told the capacity crowd at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Saturday night. “It ain’t equal. I tell women that whole ‘you can have it all’—mmm, nope, not at the same time, that’s a lie. It’s not always enough to lean in because that s**t doesn’t work.” The crowd burst into laughter. “I thought we were at home, y’all. I was gettin’ real comfortable up in here. Alright, I’m back now. Sometimes that stuff doesn’t work.” Curse words aside, Chelly O wasn’t done being blunt and unfiltered about her family and her marriage. “People are like, “Oh, why’d she talk about marriage counseling?” I’m like, ‘Duh.”Marriage is hard, you know. It is hard . . . I love my husband, and we have a great marriage, and we’ve had a great marriage, but marriage is hard work.” She added that she’s seen too many couples rush into marriage. “Marriage is a lot of work, and it should be. It’s too independent individuals who are trying to come together to build a life forever.” She said, too, that despite the great efforts the Obamas undertook to have children, “kids are an interrupter; they mess it all up. Barack and I say that’s why they make ’em cute, ’cause if they weren’t cute, you’d just leave ’em in a basket.” Michelle Obama is an intelligent and beautiful woman who clearly isn’t here for the games. Jessica Biel on Justin Timberlake: Marriage Won’t Change Anything

Jessica Biel is looking forward to her newest role: wife. “To me, nothing will really change, because I’m almost never home,” the Total Recall actress told Gala . “But when I am home, I enjoy cooking.” Overall, once they tie the knot (possibly in a big summer wedding ), “I don’t think our marriage will change anything ,” the 30-year-old says. While that may turn out not to be true, she admits “it will be a challenge finding a balance between private life, family and work … I’m ready.” Biel also describes herself as “someone who lets things happen naturally,” saying she is not sure if she wants to have a child right away. “For me, getting married doesn’t mean limiting ourselves to some predefined idea. Rather, it’s an opportunity to explore new things in life.” And while fans may ogle Timberlake’s good looks and hot moves, for Biel, there are three distinct qualities she finds admirable in Justin. “The ability to communicate well … to be able to express his feelings,” she says of her future husband. “Then, loyalty. And, finally, honesty.” These two are totally the next Will and Jada Smith . [Photo: WENN.com]

AllHipHop.com Founder and CEO Chuck Creekmur moderated the Q&A session, and ?uesto wasn’t talking about D’Angelo’s appearance when he used the word “sloppiness.” Prior to the release of The Roots’ album Illadelph Halflife in 1996, the group was criticized for not having music that was “dirty” enough sonically, ?uestlove explaned. At the time, the Wu-Tang Clan was riding high, and gritty beats were favored by most hip-hop fans. But The Roots were making warm and melodic music on their first two albums. D’Angelo Album In The “Home-Stretch” ?uest took the criticism to heart and wanted to make music that was felt like a “cold sounding machine.” But working with D’Angelo helped ?uestlove find the right balance between perfect production and the imperfect “sloppiness” of live soul music. ?uestlove Wants Black Thought To Get His Male Lauryn Hill On [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] D’Angelo’s unabashed soul brought ?uestlove away from the mechanical sound The Roots had drifted towards, and helped bring the crew back to their foundation. The awards honor “fair, accurate and inclusive representations” of the LGBT community in television and journalism. Big winners of the night included “True Blood,” which won for Outstanding Drama Series, and “30 Rock,” which won for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character) for its “Klaus & Greta” episode. Entrepreneur Russell Simmons was honored with the Excellence in Media Award. Ricky Martin took home the Vito Russo Award, which is presented to a “lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community.” In his speech, Martin credited GLAAD for helping him cope in the wake of his public coming out last year on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” He then went on to push for Latin American gay rights and asked that GLAAD stand up for those who can’t in that community. “I just want to be free. I can say today I’m free,” he said at the event. “And for that I definitely need to thank my parents for being so supportive, my mother and my dad for their unconditional love, and my friends, my family, my fans. And my partner in crime and my boyfriend Carlos.” That was only the beginning of the accolades for those projects and people nominated, with additional GLAAD awards scheduled to be handed out in Los Angeles on April 10 and in San Francisco on May 14. Mariah Carey Reportedly Not Joining ‘X Factor’

Pop diva ‘politely declined’ Simon Cowell’s offer to sit on judges’ panel, according to Essence.com. By James Dinh Mariah Carey Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images As anticipation grows for the debut of Simon Cowell’s “X Factor,” there’s one industry vet who will not appear on the reality singing show’s judging panel: Mariah Carey . Despite previous whispers about her joining the celebrity lineup , it appears that the soon-to-be mom has turned down Cowell’s request to judge the talent show, according to Essence.com . While Cowell did approach the iconic pop singer/songwriter with the request, the songstress “politely declined,” as she’s gearing up for the arrival of her twins and writing material for her next studio album. News of Carey’s decision comes just days after the pop megastar’s longtime label boss, L.A. Reid, joined the forthcoming Fox show . On Thursday, the record executive resigned from his chairman position at Island Def Jam for a spot on the judges’ panel. Reid joined the record label in 2004 and is most noted for assisting Carey with her comeback the following year. With Reid free to take up a position at Sony Music, the label that will provide the “X Factor” winner with a recording contract, rumors have swirled that Carey will wrap up her contract with Universal Music Group and follow the executive to Sony Music. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out the remaining judges who have signed on for “X Factor.” Last week, Cowell told MTV News that he was days away from unveiling the lineup. He also opened up about his efforts to collect a top-notch panel for the show. “It’s gonna be a balance between guys and girls, and it should be a balance between people who have been singers and also, like me, have worked behind the scenes and know what they’re talking about it,” the former “American Idol” judge MTV News. “It will be the best judging panel so far. I promise you: If I get the people I want, I’m really happy.” Who do you want to see judge “X Factor”? Share your ideas in the comments! Related Artists Mariah Carey

Mix’n Match Prefab: A New Approach from Michelle Kaufmann

One of the problems of modern prefab is to find a balance between the efficiency of standard plans and the flexibility of customization. Michelle Kaufmann gives us an exclusive preview of a new concept, where you mix and match different, but standard, boxes. To use a clothing analogy, most modern prefab designs were never really “off the rack” but were more like “made to measure”, where a pattern would be modified and customized for the customer. Some prefabs, like the Acorn from Empyrian, were closer to “bespoke”. But the problem with customization is that it takes time to price, adds time to construc… Read the full story on TreeHugger
