#CapCityXmas18: HBCU Grads Host Christmas Benefit In Honor Of Their Three Late Classmates

#CapCityXmas18 An annual benefit party is happening in Washington D.C. for a foundation dedicated in remembrance to three fallen friends. Now in its eighth year, the Capital City Christmas Classic is more than a holiday get-together, it’s a party with a purpose that’s benefitting the SVGS Foundation this year. The foundation has a mission to empower, educate and encourage deserving and committed African American male scholars to attend Historically Black College and Universities. It was founded in remembrance of three HBCU classmates who passed away in fall 2009, spring 2011, and spring 2018 respectively. SVGS stands for Seeking Visions, Gaining Success. It’s an acronym and phrase that the friend group often bonded over through college and in the immediate years after. “Cap City Xmas is the epitome of making “FUNdraising”,” says Mark Williams, Capital City Christmas Classic creator, and SVGS President. “Over the years, we’ve built it from being a meaningless house party, to being the cities most anticipated Holiday party of the year. As we grew in our careers, we felt compelled to make the event more about giving back to our community, and less about just turning up for the holidays. In the past the event benefited the likes of Toys 4 Tots and the HBCU foundation.” This year’s celebration takes place at the 999 E street Hard Rock Cafe and will include an open bar option, music from DJ Juanski and DJ Nitecrawler and a holiday sweater contest. Race Matters: Study Shows Black College Students Graduate With More Debt Than White Students

Black College Students Graduate With More Debt Than Whites A new study from the Brookings Institution shows that African-American college students graduate with at least $7,400 more in student loans than their white counterparts reports MIC : Four years after graduation, the difference between what white and black grads owe widens to $25,000, the researchers found, precisely at the time when students should be flourishing in the workforce and beginning to pay the loans down. While white graduates owe about $28,000 after four years, black degree holders owe more than $52,700 on average, the study showed. “People need to know about these numbers,” said Judith Scott-Clayton, an economics professor at Teacher’s College at Columbia University and the study’s lead author, in a phone interview. For-profit graduate programs appear to be part of the problem, she said, with 28% of black graduate students in a for-profit graduate institution. That compares with just 9% of white students today and just 7% of black graduates in 2004. Read the entire study HERE and share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Black College Student Comes Home From Spring Break And Finds This All Over Her Apartment!

Black College Student Finds Racial Slurs All Over Apartment A Black co-ed at Texas A&M Corpus Christi came home from spring break to find disgusting racial slurs written all over her apartment. What the hell??!? Via KRIS TV reports: The African American female found threatening racial slurs written all over her apartment. Corpus Christi Police Chief Floyd Simpson called a sudden news conference Monday to discuss the findings. He made it very clear that part of the reason for calling the news conference is the number of similar cases involving racism happening across the country right now, including several at other college campuses. Simpson hoped to bring this case to the public as a way of talking about it and also finding those responsible. Photos from inside the apartment show an image of a person being hanged and reads “White Power. We’re coming for you”. Another says, “Die (n-word). Where is your protector? White Power”. Several of the messages also include misspelled words or bad grammar, not the type of writing expected from a college student. “I think the community ought to be hurt by this. I think that we all ought to take it very seriously,” said Simpson. The Islander Village complex on Alameda is gated and appears to have security cameras, but the student who found the messages left town for Spring Break, so it’s unclear exactly when the break-in happened. Other students at the complex and on campus can’t believe it happened here. Racism and inequality doesn’t stop just because you enter a college campus….

For Discussion: Congressional Black Caucus Members Accuse President Obama Of Disregarding Struggling HBCUs

Congressional Black Caucus: President Obama Doesn’t Care About Struggling HBCUs President Obama has received flack from the black community for nearly his entire time in office over claims that he supposedly neglects HBCUs and now a new report from the CBC is echoing those sentiments. via HBCU Digest A report from Congressional Black Caucus blog CrewOf42.com quotes several members of the caucus saying that President Barack Obama offered harsh criticism of black colleges during a meeting with the caucus earlier this week. In his first meeting with the caucus in nearly two years, President Obama said that low graduation rates, not federal funding cuts or his community college free tuition plan, were the greatest threats to HBCUs. “He said there were some HBCUs that were not good at graduating students and if they did not improve they’d have to go by the wayside,” said Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA).  “In other words he didn’t show much empathy for struggling HBCUs. It was like show me the numbers and if the numbers aren’t where they need to be, that’s it. It was a somewhat callous view of the unique niche HBCUs fill,” Rep. Johnson, a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, said. Rep. Johnson said there needs to be a deeper discussion with the President on HBCU issues. Other legislators shared the sentiments. The CBC’s First Vice Chair, Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY) said, “I was concerned about what the President said because it feeds into a narrative about the value of these institutions and whether they are equip to educate our students and what the cost is for doing so,” Rep. Clarke added.  “Many of these institutions have not had a maintenance of effort on the part of states or the federal government and over time that wears on their ability to maintain standards or even advance beyond a certain level. It was very clear that he doesn’t have the same level of appreciation for what these institutions have done and could do in the future given the right support systems,” Rep. Clarke concluded. President Obama clearly has a million things on his plate and it seems no matter how many of them he’s able to tend to, there’s always someone left dissatisfied with how he decides to handle things. Do you agree with the CBC’s comments? Let’s discuss.
