Endangered Gorilla Killed to Save Toddler’s Life: Who’s to Blame?

An employee at the Cincinnati Zoo shot and killed an endangered lowland gorilla on Saturday after a four-year-old boy slipped and fell into the animal's enclosure. A zoo official confirmed the incident during a press conference… and the Internet is now abuzz over who is to blame for this tragedy. The following piece of surveillance footage depicts Harambe – a 17-year-old, 400-pound gorilla – grabbing the child and pulling him around its habitat. This lasted for approximately 10 minutes, while the boy's mother and many other zoo guests looked on in helpless horror. Considering this a life-threatening situation, the zoo's dangerous animal response team acted by fatally taking down the gorilla, according to Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard. After the animal was shot with a rifle, the toddler was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He had non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be just fine. “The child was not under attack but all sorts of things could happen,” Maynard said. “He certainly was at risk.” After the boy went under the railing, through a set of wires and over a moat wall, two female gorilla were called away from the scene. However, the male gorilla went to the moat, picked up the kid and started to drag him through the water and all around. Why were real bullets used over a tranquilizer? Because the latter would take too long to take effect, Maynard explained. Because the western lowland gorilla is a critically endangered species, zoo employees are in mourning today… even if understand why the shooting had to take place. Others, however, wonder why this precaution had to be taken if the gorilla had done the child any harm after 10 minutes. Watch the frightening video below and choose a side: did the employees do what needed to be done in order to save a child's life? Or should they have refrained from the fatal act because they understood Harambe would never have hurt the boy?

Stop The Domestic Violence: Cincinnati Reds Pitcher Aroldis Chapman Accused Of Choking His Girlfriend, Firing Handgun

Aroldis Chapman Accused Of Choking His Girlfriend A baseball star has been accused of choking his baby’s mother and firing off a gun 8 times within their garage. However, with little to no cooperation from the victim, it’s not looking like charges will be filed… Via People : Cincinnati Reds All-Star pitcher Aroldis Chapman allegedly shoved and choked his girlfriend and then went into the garage of his Davie, Florida, home alone and fired eight rounds with a handgun into a concrete wall, according to a police report obtained by PEOPLE. The alleged incident occurred on Oct. 30 but was first reported on Monday in a Yahoo Sports report. The report states that Chapman, 27, “was involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend… over information she obtained from his cellphone.” According to the report, Chapman’s girlfriend told cops that he ” ‘choked’ her by placing his hands around her neck, but did not prevent her from breathing at any time.” She also allegedly told them that he pushed her up against a wall and caused her to fall to the floor. Chapman allegedly admitted to cops that during the argument, he left the house and got into the passenger seat of his Land Rover, where he punched the side window with his left hand – his pitching hand – causing a laceration. After that, Chapman allegedly told cops, he locked himself in his garage alone and shot several rounds inside. Police recovered eight shell casings. But once cops needed to press charges, Chapman’s girlfriend changed her tune… No arrests were made in the incident. Investigator Mark Brent wrote: “Due to conflicting stories, lack of cooperation by the victim and witnesses, no physical injuries, and the fact that Mr. Chapman fired his gun in a closed garage with no one present, there is insufficient evidence to charge him with a crime.” Chapman’s girlfriend, who is the mother of his infant child, left the house with police still there, the report states. When Brent asked the girlfriend’s brother to pass along his telephone number, the brother allegedly told Brent that she probably wouldn’t call him, the report states. Interesting. Apparently the MLB is still looking into this one. No word yet on what plans, if any, they have to discipline one of their all-star players over this incident… Getty

Still Strong: Bengals Cut Devon Still After Keeping Him On The Team To Pay For Daughter’s Cancer Treatments

Bengals Cut Devon Still From Team NFL baller and proud daddy Devon Still has been fired by the team that helped him keep his brave daughter alive during her cancer treatments. Via Cincinnati : When the Cincinnati Bengals cut their 2012 second-round pick a year ago, a new NFL roster exception allowed the team to re-sign him to the practice squad despite being in his third season. It was a promise the team made to him so he could continue to carry health insurance. It was a decision that brought peace and an element of security to Still and his family as his daughter, Leah, went through the terrifying stages of Stage 4 neuroblastoma treatments. The Enquirer has confirmed that the Bengals cut Devon Still on Saturday, but the peace of mind can continue. Because the Bengals kept Still a part of the team, he will have health insurance for the next five years — even if he never plays another down in the NFL. It is one of the reasons why there will never be any ill will between Still and the organization. “My heart is still with the Bengals,” Still told The Enquirer earlier in the week when contemplating the chance that he could not make the team. “First of all, they drafted me and gave me the opportunity to be in the NFL. Second of all they did everything they could to help me save my daughter’s life and to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. There’s nothing that can break that bond, can break that relationship, because my daughter is more important than this game any day. They stepped up and helped me take care of my daughter. There’s nothing that can break that.” We hope Devon continues to stay strong not only for himself but for his brave daughter!
