Selena Gomez: Demi Lovato is SO Brave! I Love Her!

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were both Barney actresses before becoming Disney stars as teens. Since then, though, their lives have taken down different paths — each with their own claims to fame, their own successes, and their own struggles. Demi recently shared a lot about herself in a documentary, showing how far she’s come but revealing that she still has a ways to go. And who spoke up to praise her for her honesty and bravery but Selena Gomez. Selena Gomez revealed her Lupus diagnosis back in 2015. The illness, which was constantly mentioned on House back in that medical drama’s heyday, involves Selena’s own autoimmune system attacking her healthy organs, perceiving them as intruders. Despite modern medicine, Lupus can still be deadly. Even with drastic treatments, including chemotherapy, Lupus has taken its toll on Selena Gomez, forcing her to undergo a kidney transplant in secret earlier this year.  It was actually her friend, Francia Raisa, who donated her kidney to Selena in a life-saving display of friendship and generosity.  Selena’s ongoing battle with Lupus has forced her to take multiple extended breaks from her career as an actress and from being one of the greatest singers on the face of the Earth. Honestly, as wonderful as it is that she was able to receive a kidney transplant, that’s not a cure. It’s a short-term solution for one particular problem. Some people are genuinely afraid that Lupus will claim Selena’s life. Demi Lovato has had more than her share of struggles too, however. In fact, Demi recently shared before and after eating disorder photos , highlighting her dramatic transition into being and feeling so much healthier. She’s also spoken at length about mental health — about bipolar disorder and especially about the debilitating effects of depression. Contrary to what some people might suggest, just because Demi’s illnesses are psychological doesn’t make them her fault. And it doesn’t make them somehow more deserved than Selena’s Lupus or anyone’s anything. Demi shared bits of her life and struggles in her documentary, Simply Complicated . But Demi also talks about how much personal progress she’s made. Demi promoted her documentary, which is on YouTube, via Instagram. Selena Gomez left an Instagram comment for all to see. “This was beautiful. I’m so happy for you.” Recently, Demi’s life has been full of many good things for her to celebrate. Selena’s praise continues: “You always continue to [be] bold and real. I wish more people were like you. Love you.” That is so wholesome. The world really would be a better place if more people were like Demi Lovato. Or like Selena. In the documentary, Demi speaks directly about her continuing battle with her eating disorder. “When I feel lonely, my heart feels hungry and then I end up binging and I don’t know how to figure out how to be alone.” A lot of people eat emotionally, even when they aren’t hungry. Demi’s situation is a bit more severe, which is why this is called a disorder. (Which means that solutions that work for most of us, like “oh I’ll knit instead of eating” or “just play video games that keep your hands busy” aren’t as helpful for people who might compulsively overeat) “One thing that I haven’t fully conquered is my eating disorder.” Eating disorders usually work a little like alcoholism — you might recover, but you never have a “normal” relationship with food. “Food is still the biggest challenge in my life. It’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.” That part is almost universally relatable, right? I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to eat today since last night. What makes it a disorder is that Demi has, in the past, struggled to stop herself from overeating — and then she dealt with self-loathing issues by throwing up. That’s bulimia, folks. Understanding that those battling mental illness aren’t just grappling with neurotypical impulses is important. It’s good that Selena Gomez has so much empathy for her friend. And it’s good that both of these talented stars are sharing their stories. View Slideshow: Demi Lovato: 19 Candid Confessions from Her Documentary

Still Strong: Bengals Cut Devon Still After Keeping Him On The Team To Pay For Daughter’s Cancer Treatments

Bengals Cut Devon Still From Team NFL baller and proud daddy Devon Still has been fired by the team that helped him keep his brave daughter alive during her cancer treatments. Via Cincinnati : When the Cincinnati Bengals cut their 2012 second-round pick a year ago, a new NFL roster exception allowed the team to re-sign him to the practice squad despite being in his third season. It was a promise the team made to him so he could continue to carry health insurance. It was a decision that brought peace and an element of security to Still and his family as his daughter, Leah, went through the terrifying stages of Stage 4 neuroblastoma treatments. The Enquirer has confirmed that the Bengals cut Devon Still on Saturday, but the peace of mind can continue. Because the Bengals kept Still a part of the team, he will have health insurance for the next five years — even if he never plays another down in the NFL. It is one of the reasons why there will never be any ill will between Still and the organization. “My heart is still with the Bengals,” Still told The Enquirer earlier in the week when contemplating the chance that he could not make the team. “First of all, they drafted me and gave me the opportunity to be in the NFL. Second of all they did everything they could to help me save my daughter’s life and to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. There’s nothing that can break that bond, can break that relationship, because my daughter is more important than this game any day. They stepped up and helped me take care of my daughter. There’s nothing that can break that.” We hope Devon continues to stay strong not only for himself but for his brave daughter!

Weekend Openers: Woody Allen, Pixar Animation, Abraham Lincoln, the End of Earth and More

Penélope Cruz, Woody Allen and Geta Gerwig at the NYC premiere of To Rome with Love this week hosted by the Cinema Society. Photo by Nick Hunt/Patrick McMullan Co. This weekend’s new theatrical offerings include a massive array for any taste. In the studio realm, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter marks the 16th Prez as a savior from Vampires, Pixar’s Brave centers on a Princess who must save her kingdom. Focus’ Seeking a Friend for the End of the World pits a mismatched man and woman on an unlikely road trip, while doc The Invisible War is a fascinating but sad exposé on the sad truth about sexual assault in the U.S. military. Fellow doc Kumaré , meanwhile follows a man posing as an Eastern guru who builds his own following in Arizona. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Director: Timur Bekmambetov Writers: Seth Grahame-Smith Cast: Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie Distributor: Fox Just the title itself makes it a worthy consideration. In this fantasy/horror pic, America’s 16th President adds another credit to his stellar historical legacy. Vampires are planning to take over the United States and of course he is the man who takes it upon himself to eliminate them… Brave (Animation) Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Steve Purcell Writers: Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell, Brenda Chapman, Irene Mecchi Cast: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson Distributor: Buena Vista Paramount/Dreamworks Animation has been bringing in lots of cash with their big summer animated feature Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and it looks like Disney/Pixar will be reaping some box office gold themselves with Brave . So, for the plot… Princess Merida is a determined gal, who wants to follow her own destiny. She breaks with tradition and unfortunately it brings chaos to her kingdom. But, she is granted one wish and Merida must rely on her bravery and even her archery prowess to end the curse. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Director: Lorene Scafaria Writer: Lorene Scafaria Cast: Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, Melanie Lynskey, Adam Brody Distributor: Focus Features The directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria, this pic explores what people will do when faced with the end of the world. In the feature, an asteroid is speeding toward Earth and one attempt to avoid calamity has failed. Dodge (Steve Carell), a man who plays by the rules, is facing a failed marriage. His wife leaves him on the spot. Meanwhile, his neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley) is an extroverted woman who does not play by the rules. Dodge decides to seek out a long lost love, while Penny makes her way back to her family and the two unlikely travel companions set out on the road together. The Invisible War (Documentary) Director: Kirby Dick
Subjects: Helen Benedict, Anu Bhagwati, Susan Burke
Distributor: Cinedigm Digital Cinema, Docurama This could very well get an Oscar nomination, so check it out before the hype begins. Kirby Dick and producing partner Amy Ziering delve into the mostly unknown scourge of rape and sexual assault that runs rampant in the U.S. military. Don’t let the subject matter scare you off. Sure it’s tough, but this is a great movie and – what the hell – why not educate yourself? Said Kirby Dick about making the film : “Each one of these interviews were equally stunning. Amy did each interview and she did a phenomenal job and she’d be emotionally drained and devastated and be incredibly angry afterward. It was a good combination.” Kumaré (Documentary) Director: Vikram Gandhi Subjects: Vikram Gandhi, Purva Bedi, Kristen Calgaro Distributor: Kino Lorber Films Ever wondered how gurus and other spirituals manage to find their, well… following? If so, then so has filmmaker Vikram Gandhi and his crew. Gandhi, who grew up in New Jersey and is skeptical of religion decides to don a beard, long hair and some made-up Eastern Mysticism jargon and heads West to Arizona where sure enough, he finds his followers. His message is quite benign, “the answers are within yourself,” he tells his sheep. “It’s a place where nobody really knew us and a place that represented America, but at the same time open to new ideas,” producer Brendan Colthurst shared about Arizona. Most of the country may have to wait a bit though, the film is only in New York this weekend. To Rome with Love Director: Woody Allen Writer: Woody Allen Cast: Woody Allen, Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics Last year Woody Allen made the City of Lights a character in one of his most successful films to date, Midnight in Paris and this year, the New York director made the Eternal City a star in To Rome with Love . The film, a story about a number of people in the Italian capital, follows Americans and Italians in various romances and adventures throughout Rome. The film already opened overseas and opened the Los Angeles Film Festival last week. It had its own glittering premiere in New York earlier this week, courtesy of the Cinema Society and sponsor Piaget at Casa Lever. Fittingly, Italian beverage Disaronno was being served. Along with cast members, the celeb quotient was through the roof.

Mitt Romney Likes to Fire People

Probably not the best word choice, Mitt, regardless of context. The frontrunner in New Hampshire since, oh, 2009, Mitt Romney will likely win today’s GOP primary, according to polling estimates. But the former Bain Capital CEO is still under fire over a comment he made Monday on the campaign trail. Talking about how he wants to allow people to shop for their own health insurance and to change insurers if they aren’t happy with them, Romney said he likes being able to fire people who don’t provide adequate business services. While Mitt’s remarks don’t imply he wants to lay people off en masse, this is not exactly a great quote from a guy branded as a corporate raider who laid people off en masse: Mitt Romney: You’re Fired!
