For decades, Liam Neeson has enjoyed a place as one of Hollywood’s most beloved and bankable stars. But the Taken star may have just done irreparable damage to his reputation with one appalling comment. Neeson has been on a promotional tour for his new film, Cold Pursuit , which — like most of his recent projects — finds the Irish actor on a bloody quest for revenge after one of his loved ones is victimized. The plot of the film prompted Neeson to reflect on a time when he had been driven mad by a thirst for vengeance in his real life. He recalled an instance that occurred in his youth, in which a close friend of his was raped. “God forbid you’ve ever had a member of your family hurt under criminal conditions,” Neeson told The Independent . “She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way,” he added. “But my immediate reaction was … I asked, did she know who it was? No. What color were they? She said it was a black person.” Neeson went on to shock fans by revealing that he fantasized about exacting some sort of race-based violence. “I went up and down areas with a cosh [bludgeon], hoping I’d be approached by somebody — I’m ashamed to say that … hoping some ‘black bastard’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could … kill him,” Neeson recalled. Neeson went on to reveal that he behaved in this fashion for “a week, maybe a week and a half … [My friend] would say, ‘Where are you going?’ and I would say, ‘I’m just going out for a walk.’ ‘What’s wrong?’ ‘No, no, nothing’s wrong.’ ” “It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that. And I’ve never admitted that, and I’m saying it to a journalist. God forbid,” he added. “It’s awful. But I did learn a lesson from it, when I eventually thought, ‘What the f—k are you doing?’ “ We think it’s safe to say the whole world was happier not knowing about Liam’s past tendencies toward violent racism — and yet at the same time, maybe it’s a good thing he foolishly shared this story with the world. It’s a reminder of the sad fact that even seemingly progressive-minded longtime public figures like Liam Neeson are capable of shocking bigotry. Starring in Schindler’s List is apparently no guarantee that a person never harbored race-based violent fantasies. The actions that Neeson describes here are unforgivable, but if there’s a mitigating circumstance to be found, it’s that he may have suffered some sort of trauma as a result of his friend’s rape. The Independent consulted with an expert in rape and trauma, who revealed that it’s not uncommon for loved ones of victims to lash out and project in the fashion Neeson described: “Often it is less obvious to the loved ones of survivors that they might actually need support in dealing with their emotions themselves, just like the survivors,” she told the paper. “They experience a secondary form of trauma, she explains. Some start thinking about what they could have done differently, and they may contemplate seeking retribution.” Obviously, none of that makes it okay that Neeson stalked the streets of Dublin hoping to bludgeon a black man, but at least it’s a step toward understanding how such thinking might be possible. Perhaps anticipating the backlash to his insane remarks, Neeson went on to reveal that he had been desensitized to violence “I knew a couple of guys that died on hunger strike, and I had acquaintances who were very caught up in the Troubles, and I understand that need for revenge, but it just leads to more revenge, to more killing and more killing, and Northern Ireland’s proof of that,” he said. “All this stuff that’s happening in the world, the violence, is proof of that. But that primal need, I understand.” Neeson and his reps have not commented on this story.
A bride-to-be is begging the internet for advice. After spending what she thought was a nice day buying her wedding dress, she learned that her future mother-in-law is spreading lies about her. Her mother-in-law called the day a “s–t show” and, having been caught, won’t even speak to to the bride. Yikes. Most of Reddit is a cesspool, but sometimes, people looking for advice share some amazing stories. One that really caught on and made the rounds this week concerns a bride-to-be who discovered that her future mother-in-law is a two-faced liar. In a Reddit post that has since been locked (thanks to a salty moderator who didn’t like the story going viral). But we know what the northern California Reddit user who goes by the handle “Bamboo2u” said about her monster-in-law . She reveals that a few relatives, including her mother and her soon-to-be mother-in-law, traveled up from southern California. They accompanied her while she picked out her wedding dress. “Overall we had a great day and I got the most amazing dress,” she writes. “My mom cried and my fiance’s mom cried … it was special” Before she reveals the backstabbing, she shares some specifics from that day’s conversations. “At lunch my mom told everyone she suggested I keep my maiden name for work only,” she writes. “And take my fiance’s name for personal life.” She shares that this is a specific necessity for her line of owrk. “I have a problem with clients asking to be friends on Facebook and Instagram,” she says. “Which I cannot do because it’s against my work’s rules.” She explains: “I want to keep my personal life private from my work life.” “My fiance’s mom agreed with my mom,” she says. “Because that is what she does for work too.” She was filled with joy and excited for her wedding. Those happy feelings faded when she received a scathing text from her mother-in-law. (Her mother-in-law has been symbolically pictured here as a plant that is sometimes called mother-in-law’s tongue ) You know how you can accidentally message the wrong person, and it just makes you want to curl up into a ball and disappear? Well, it turns out that it’s almost as bad to receive a wrong text “The text said the whole day was a s–t show,” she writes. “And,” she continues, her future mother-in-law wrote “that my mom advised me to not take my fiance’s name for career reasons.” “I’m so hurt that she would go around spreading lies about my mom,” she says. “She knows that’s not what my mom said.” Obviously, that’s horrifying. What she thought had been a pleasant day turned into a nightmare. She told her fiance and he even confronted his mother. When he asked his mom to apologize, she writes, the woman who will soon be her mother-in-law refused. “Honestly, I’m more worried she is now going around to his family and saying mean things about my mom,” the woman writes. It makes sense to feel more offended on her mother’s behalf. “I’m not sure what to do at this point,” the woman confesses. This is why she went onto Reddit to ask for advice. “I saw my future mother in law the other day and she refused to look at me or even talk to me,” she reveals. All jokes from people who despise their mothers-in-law aside, you don’t really want to not be on speaking terms with your spouse’s mom. “But I’m the kind of person who likes to kill you with kindness,” the woman concludes. “Which seems to drive her crazy.” Some suggest that she go on as she’s doing, but to be on guard that this could happen again. Others think that continuing to be polite will let this woman sweep this matter under the rug — and that she should go to war over it. But good luck for this woman’s wedding. Something strange is going on with the Kardashians. Perhaps they’re taking a page from Kanye’s Big Book of Insanity , or maybe the sisters realized they need to be less boring if they’re to maintain the vise-grip on our national consciousness that they’ve enjoyed for the past decade. Whatever the case, the Kards have been more dramatic, more eccentric … more weird in recent months than ever before. It’s a trend fans began to notice when the sisters began to engage in increasingly vitriolic arguments on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. (The recent Kim vs. Kourtney feud is a memorable, hilarious example.) Around this same time, Khloe became much more candid when discussing the Tristan Thompson cheating scandal . Now, even Kim — long regarded as the most “basic” of the Kardashian sisters — is proudly letting her freak flag fly (and not in the way she did in her infamous Ray J tape ). Due to her involvement in securing presidential pardons for Alice Marie Jones and other non-violent inmates, Kim was invited to appear at the Variety/Rolling Stone’s Criminal Justice Reform Summit in Los Angeles. And she made some surprising revelations during an onstage interview with CNN’s Van Jones. Speaking about her father’s work as a lawyer, Kim opened up about the ways in which her family was affected by the OJ Simpson murder trial. “When he was involved in cases like the OJ case, that one was … obviously that was his best friend and it was deeper,” Kim said. “Nicole was my mom’s best friend. It was more than just a case he took on. But a lot of the meetings were held at our home and we would have Johnny Cochran, Shawn Holley, Bob Shapiro. All the attorneys would meet in our house,” the mother of three continued. “And so they had all of the evidence books in the library of my dad’s house and so on the weekends when no one was around, I would go over these evidence books and go over crime scene photos and wild stuff.” Yes, it seems that just like the rest of the country, young Kiki was fixated on that grisly scene in Brentwood. Unlike the rest of us, however, the drama was playing out in her own home. “My sister Kourtney would be, ‘What are you doing? Why do you care about this stuff? Leave it alone. You are not supposed to be going through it.’ I was just always so interested,” she added. “I would just ask my dad questions. I was always really present.” So next time you find yourself wondering how someone as milquetoast as Kim puts up with the roiling insanity of Kanye West, just remember that this is a woman who grew up pics of her mom’s best friend’s murder. Alaskan Bush People viewers were treated to an early Christmas present on Friday night. Following many months off the air, the popular Discovery Channel series aired a special holiday episode over the weekend, one that provided fans with a critical update. We’re talking, of course, about Ami Brown. The family matriarch has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy for nearly the entire year. She’s been brutally honest about her condition and her very low odds of long-term survival. On this special installment, however, Ami and her loved ones received some positive news: She is finished with treatment. (Viewers also learned that the Browns relocated from Alaska to southern California in order for Ami to be seen by physicians as UCLA; it had not been known previously exactly where she was being treated.) “There is very single reason to be hopeful and absolutely optimistic,” Dr. Deborah Wong told Ami and Billy on the episode. There’s still a long way for Ami to go, of course, but it’s important to savor every moment in situations such as this. “Life is a gift,” Ami said in response to the doctor’s encouraging words. The family celebrated the good news with a surprise for Ami, as the Brown kids decorated their California house roof-to-foundation and prepared a Christmas dinner. Wearing a Santa hat at one point, Ami was led out of the home by Billy, blindfolded and holding her husband’s hand. Once she saw the garden and how it had been filled with lights and a Christmas tree, Ami could hardly contain her emotion. “The best thing about this Christmas is that mom gets to spend it with us,” daughter Birdy said on camera, adding: “It was looking bad for a while. Having mom here for this Christmas I think is the best gift that we could ever get.” We wish Ami and all the Browns the absolute best during this holiday season. Said Billy of the occasion: “For the Brown family, the meaning of Christmas is all things good… it’s that one time of the year that you really celebrate life. “It’s a time of giving and also receiving love, and kind of a combination of the whole year, right there together.” Prior to this episode and this update, the last we had heard from the Alaskan Bush People regarding Ami’s health was when daughter Rain revealed on Instagram that the family were “hopeful” as her mom began a second round of chemotherapy. As for the future of the show? This is unimportant compared to Ami’s well-being, of course, but plenty of fans out there remain curious. There’s been talk that the Browns are moving to Colorado for Season 8 , along with chatter over Bam Bam and his girlfriend landing a spinoff. Nothing has been confirmed yet, however. All that really matters right now is that Ami continues to progress and to spend as much time as possible with her loved ones.
