Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘Otis’ Video To Premiere Thursday!

Watch the Throne clip will hit MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com and BET at 8:56 p.m. ET/PT. By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West in their “Otis” video Photo: Roc-A-Fella Jay-Z and Kanye West will continue to keep fans watching. Three days after the monumental release of their collaborative album Watch the Throne, Hov and Yeezy will premiere the LP’s first video, for “Otis,” on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com and BET on Thursday at 8:56 p.m. ET/PT. Immediately following the premiere, the Spike Jonze-directed music video will air on MTV Jams and MTV Hits, with an encore airing on MTV2 at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Read all about how Jay and Kanye are breaking the mold with Watch the Throne. “Otis” captivated music fans when it premiered last month on DJ Funkmaster Flex’s Hot 97 radio show in New York. The song, which samples Otis Redding’s 1966 rendition of “Try a Little Tenderness,” finds Jay and ‘Ye rapping eight bars apiece before passing the mic back and forth several times during the track’s two-minute-and-58-second run. There is no catchy chorus or melodic refrain, just the dusty record loop and hard-hitting rhymes, which made the song an instant fan favorite. Days after the song’s release, two pictures from the video’s set were leaked online. One photo showed a large American flag draped over a blue wall, correlating with Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci’s cover art for the single. The second pic was of Jonze and West on set, but it ultimately revealed nothing about the clip’s theme or overall feel. What are the critics saying about Watch the Throne ? So far, the “Otis” video has been shrouded in mystery, much like the Watch the Throne album itself. Because the LP didn’t leak early like most albums these days do, fans didn’t get their first listen to the album until it was officially released Monday. Now they get to see WTT ‘s first visual when the “Otis” video premieres Thursday. In addition to the premiere, fans can check out MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (August 10) at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com and watch as industry experts weigh in on Watch the Throne and what to expect from the joint album’s first video. Jay-Z sums up the appeal of this clip with his own admission: “I want to know what the f*ck they were saying in the studio making ‘Thriller’”. In advance of their collaborative album, Watch The Throne , Jay-Z and Kanye West have released a 10-minute documentary of their time spent recording the album.  The two artists pull off the rare feat of being ubiquitous yet extremely private, making this sneak peek into their world must see TV. Jay-Z Is Two Songs Deep Into Next Solo Album

Working on Watch the Throne with Kanye got the creative juices flowing for Blueprint 3 follow-up. By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — While fans are still eagerly waiting for Jay-Z to drop his collaborative album with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, he has already started working on his next solo album. At an exclusive listening session for Throne on Thursday night at the Mercer Hotel, the Brooklyn rapper revealed that he is two songs deep into recording his 12th solo LP. The experience of creating the collaboration was so positive, Jay said, it inspired him begin working on new material of his own. Besides the two songs he has already completed, which he claimed were the best first pair of tunes he has ever created for one of his albums, he also has another four ideas ready to go. “I know exactly the tone and the whole feel of the album,” Jay-Z said of the follow-up to 2009’s platinum-certified The Blueprint 3. “I think when you experience creativity, you should get it out as much as possible.” Even though Watch the Throne isn’t in stores yet (pre-order receipts seem to indicate, unofficially, that it will be out on August 2), the “Empire State of Mind” rapper doesn’t want to stifle the creative juices that started flowing when he was working with West. And the inspiration flowed both ways, it seems. After getting Odd Future singer Frank Ocean to record a song for his solo album, Hov decided to have the crooner contribute his vocals to two Watch the Throne songs. So will this new solo effort come out before the discs from his Roc Nation signees J. Cole and Jay Electronica ? “Hopefully,” he quipped, before adding, “I don’t play that. We’re all competing for the same mind share. J. Cole and Jay Electronica are both making inspiring music.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Drake’s Next Act, Lil Wayne’s Return, More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for post-prison music from T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, along with more from Young Money/ Cash Money. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Skip Bolen/ Getty Images Arrests and court cases dominated the hip-hop headlines last year, but with Lil Wayne free and a host of new stars ready to take the next step, 2011 should bring some better days . Drake is expected to drop Take Care, the follow-up to his debut, and the entire Young Money/ Cash Money crew has their sights set on world domination (can we also get a world tour?). There are still some MCs behind bars, but T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy will be out soon, and hopefully acts like Young Jeezy, 50 Cent and Nas can rebound from rap purgatory with projects worthy of their talents. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part two in our preview of stories to follow in the new year. Drake’s Second Date The breakout star of 2010 is working on the follow-up to his debut, Thank Me Later : the gentlemanly titled Take Care. He’s promised bigger records for his sophomore set, and so far, he’s been in the studio with Justin Timberlake and the Neptunes, among others, to prove his point. His much-hyped R&B mixtape, It’s Never Enough, is on hold at the moment as Drizzy takes his act international during his current jaunt across the Atlantic with J. Cole. When the pair of projects arrive, however, expect Drake-mania to ratchet up all over again. Freed MCs The past 12 months weren’t kind to T.I. After being released from a halfway house in March, the beloved Atlanta MC returned to work, but the reception to his solo material was tepid. He scored knockouts with his guest verses on Drake’s and Rick Ross’ albums, but by the time he released his retooled (and rushed) No Mercy LP, he was back behind bars after a parole violation . We’re hoping Tip rebounds like Blake Griffin when he completes his 11-month prison term. Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, meanwhile, is scheduled to finish his jail sentence this year as well. The New York MC was embarking on a rejuvenated solo career when he was arrested on gun-possession charges. We’ll be saluting him when he touches back down. Rebounding Rappers Without a doubt, Young Jeezy is one of the best out, but the trap star has had a harder time than usual getting his latest album, the long-delayed Thug Motivation 103, out the gate due to the slow response to his single choices. Likewise, a motivated 50 Cent, who has been busy milking millions of dollars out of Hollywood lately, is set to come back with a new album, the follow-up to Before I Self-Destruct, the superstar’s first LP to fall short of the platinum-selling mark. Fellow Queens native Nas may have expanded his fanbase with his collaborative effort with Damian Marley, but fans are looking for the Distant Relatives MC to return to Nasty Nas form on his forthcoming effort, due later this year. Weezy’s World There’s Lil Wayne’s next album, and then there’s everybody else’s projects. Apologies to Jay-Z and Kanye West, but even their royal collaborative LP, Watch the Thrown, has to bow down to Tha Carter IV as the most-anticipated hip-hop album of the year. The frenetic MC was behind bars for 10 months in 2010 and has kept a low profile since he was released in November. Weezy’s rollicking “6 Foot 7 Foot” is a sign of things to come. Excuse his charisma, but we’re rocking with the Cash Money King in 2011. Young Money/ Cash Money Takeover Nicki Minaj is still in full promotional mode for Pink Friday, with videos on the way for her Drake-assisted “Moment 4 Life” and “Fly” featuring Rihanna. Then there’s Drizzy’s pair of projects, his R&B mixtape and Take Care. Lil Wayne is back (!!!) and putting the final touches on Tha Carter IV. The next generation of YM heavy hitters are on deck: Tyga, Lil Twist and Cory Gunz are all expected to drop their debuts albums. New Cash Money acquisition DJ Khaled is also readying his first project for the house that Baby and Slim built. Then there’s the rumored YMCMB tour that would place the revamped crew alongside Bad Boy, Death Row, No Limit, Rough Ryders and Roc-A-Fella as one of the premiere collectives in hip-hop history. Mixtape Daily will be back on the daily grind beginning Tuesday, January 18, with our first Main Pick of the new year, Rick Ross’ Ashes to Ashes. Kanye West And Jay-Z Harness Social Media For Watch The Throne

After MCs serve up H.A.M. on joint album’s fan page, execs at Def Jam, Facebook reveal MCs’ social strategy to MTV News. By Jenny McCoy, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Kanye West at Facebook headquarters Photo: Facebook These days, among other things, the hip-hop release playbook requires an active Facebook account, a fact rap heavyweights Kanye West and Jay-Z are obviously aware of. Just after midnight on Tuesday (January 11), the MCs gave fans a first listen to “H.A.M,” the lead single from Watch the Throne — in exchange for a “like” on the Facebook page for their collaborative album. The Watch the Throne page uses Facebook’s most popular music application, BandPages, to stream the single, and it has amassed more than 57,000 fans in just three days. “It’s great to see artists turning to social platforms to get their music out to their fans. The music release process isn’t about radio play anymore — it’s about finding fans where they live, getting songs to the people who care,” said Brenna Ehrlich, news editor at Mashable.com. Indeed, this tactic is just another example of a growing trend in the hip-hop community and the music industry at large. “While people have been able to share their music tastes on Facebook since the beginning, and we saw the emergence of social music applications gain popularity when we opened our platform in 2007, we’re still just at the beginning of this new world of music and technology,” said Meredith Chin, a staffer at Facebook’s corporate communications department. “It will be exciting to see how things evolve over time based on the creativity and imagination of musicians and their fans.” And in the wake of MySpace, the self-proclaimed “entertainment destination for Gen Y,” announcing a 47 percent staff reduction , Kanye and Jay-Z’s release strategy is just another indication of Facebook’s growing share of the social music space. Recently, both Lil Wayne and Avril Lavigne offered fans similar single-stream capabilities, but Kanye and Jay-Z made their release distinctive by directing fans to an album-specific fan page rather than simply leveraging their existing pages, which are home to 5.4 and 6.1 million fans, respectively. “I think it was smart to launch their own page, but I would have used both accounts as well. That way fans would be able to easily find the track, rather than going to a brand-new page,” Ehrlich said. Representatives for Def Jam revealed to MTV News that the idea to release “H.A.M.” via social-media network came from none other than Hov. “It was Jay-Z’s camp who set that up,” said JD Anderson, manager of new media for Def Jam. “The application also used in the strategy, RootMusic, has the capability to stream music on Facebook.” According to Anderson, the two rappers took advantage of their massive combined Facebook following to showcase the first effort from the upcoming album.”We launched it off of Jay’s Facebook, then we were sending people to the Watch the Throne new page,” Anderson explained. “Kanye has 5 million and Jay has 6 million. Everyone’s on Facebook, so the only thing that was lacking was the capability to stream music.” While there’s still no concrete release date for Watch the Throne, a rep for Def Jam revealed the LP will drop on the Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam imprint. Weezer Team Up With Ryan Adams For ‘Stirring’ New Song

‘He has a lot of wild and crazy energy,’ Rivers Cuomo says of collaborator. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images He may still be celebrating the U.S. soccer team’s heat-pounding 1-0 World Cup win over Algeria — a win he predicted , to be honest — but Weezer frontman and avowed soccer nut Rivers Cuomo isn’t about to let a little partying stand in the way of his day job. Because, though he’s gripped with World Cup fever, Cuomo is already hard at work on a whole new batch of Weezer songs — and it sounds like fans might be hearing some of the new stuff sooner rather than later. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to say here, so I’m going to keep my mouth shut,” Cuomo told MTV Radio. “But, uh, people are going to be hearing new Weezer very soon.” Cuomo wouldn’t say just when or where the new Weezer material would be made available — shoot, they just released “Represent,” the unofficial anthem for the U.S. men’s World Cup team, on Friday. But, in keeping with the collaborative spirit he harnessed for Weez’s 2009 album Raditude (which saw him work with the likes of Lil Wayne , the All-American Rejects and Dr. Luke), it sounds like he’s been teaming up once again, this time with slightly rumpled troubadour (and husband of Mandy Moore ) Ryan Adams . “I just wrote a song with Ryan Adams. Not Bryan, Ryan,” Cuomo laughed. “It’s a very stirring and emotional and powerful Weezer song. He was really inspiring to work with. … He has a lot of wild and crazy energy. It’s gonna be on the Weezer record. He plays lead guitar on it, but it will be on the Weezer record, for sure.” Are you looking forward to Weezer’s collaboration with Ryan Adams?
