Emmy Nominations Go To ‘Glee,’ ‘American Idol’

O’Brien receives a surprise Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series nomination for his now-defunct ‘Tonight Show.’ By Jocelyn Vena Cory Monteith, Heather Morris, Mark Salling and Lea Michele of “Glee” Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Bright and early Thursday morning (July 8), “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara, who is up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Emmy Awards this year, and “The Soup” and “Community” star Joel McHale joined forces to announce the nominees in the major categories of the Primetime Emmy Awards, which are set to air on NBC August 29 with Jimmy Fallon on hand to host the show. The contenders in the Outstanding Comedy Series category include “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” fan favorite “Glee,” “Modern Family,” “Nurse Jackie,” “The Office” and “30 Rock.” Lead actors and actresses nominated for their work in comedy series include Amy Poehler, Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Jim Parsons, Larry David, Tony Shalhoub, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Edie Falco, Toni Collette, and Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison from “Glee.” It seems these days, no awards show is complete without giving some love to vampires, so this time around “True Blood” earned an Outstanding Drama Series nomination. It faces off against “Breaking Bad,” “Dexter,” “The Good Wife” and “Mad Men,” as well as the equally loved and sometimes perplexing “Lost.” None of the lead actors or actresses from “True Blood” were nominated, but Matthew Fox received a lead actor nomination for “Lost” and Jon Hamm and January Jones of “Mad Men” got lead actor and actress nominations. Other nominees for Outstanding Leads in drama series include Brian Cranston, Michael C. Hall, Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie, Kyra Sedgwick, Glenn Close, Connie Britton, Julianna Margulies and Mariska Hargitay. “American Idol” will face off against “Dancing With the Stars,” “Project Runway,” “Top Chef” and “The Amazing Race” for Outstanding Reality — Competition Program. In an interesting turn of events, Conan O’Brien’s now-defunct late-night talk show “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” garnered an Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series nomination. O’Brien will face off against “The Colbert Report,” “Saturday Night Live,” The Daily Show” and ‘”Real Time With Bill Maher.” For a complete list of Emmy nominees, visit Emmys.com .

‘Flight Of The Conchords’ Calls It Quits Before Season Three

New Zealand duo Bret and Jemaine announce that they ‘like the way the show ended.’ By Gil Kaufman Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie on “Flight of the Conchords” Photo: HBO If you’ve ever accidentally danced too hard to “Sugalumps” or accidentally serenaded your intended with “The Most Beautiful Girl (in the Room),” Thursday was a sad day for you. That’s the day New Zealand’s almost-award-winning, fourth-most-popular folk duo broke the sad news that they were pulling the plug on their HBO series, “Flight of the Conchords.” After two rapturously received seasons of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement’s adventures trying to make it in New York, the show’s co-creators announced that they are calling it quits. “We’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a third season,” Clement, McKenzie and executive producer James Bobin wrote in a statement on their official site .
