Commentary (Jonathan Powers): Why the United States Needs to Free Itself from Oil

Why America needs to free itself from oil By Jonathan Powers, Special to CNN July 4, 2010 9:37 a.m. EDT Photo: An oil refinery in Los Angeles, seen before dawn. Editor's note: Jonathan Powers, a veteran of the war in Iraq, is the chief operating officer for the Truman National Security Project, which describes itself as an organization that “recruits, trains, and positions a new generation of progressives across America to lead on national security.” . (CNN) — For two years in a row, I celebrated Independence Day in the oppressive heat of Iraq along with fellow soldiers. A few nonalcoholic beers and some locally grown watermelon were our replacement for hot dogs and potato salad. This year, as Americans across the nation celebrate July Fourth with barbecues and fireworks, those most responsible for defending our independence, the military, will continue to fight two wars. And it is a shame that we will let yet another July Fourth pass us by without making substantial progress toward ending our unnecessary dependence on oil, a dependence that is funding the bullets that our enemies fire at our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is for that reason, and many more, that the fight for energy independence is being fought here at home, a struggle I hope more Americans will join in support of those who are fighting abroad. Oil poses a clear threat to America's economic and national security. This spring we have watched as untold millions of gallons of oil flowed into the Gulf. But for years, we have watched as billions of dollars flowed to hostile nations to pay for oil. Every day, we send well over a billion dollars out of this country to pay for oil — money that could and should be used to grow our economy and create jobs. The simple fact is that our dependence on oil from nations in the Middle East and other regions constrains our choices, hamstringing America's flexibility and choices on the world stage. Too often, we are forced to consider the impact our foreign policy will have on our oil supply instead of whether a choice is in line with our values. Every day, we make a clear choice between living up to those values (and strengthening our security) and prolonging our weakness as a dirty-energy nation. Today, thousands of Americans are calling for a new freedom from oil — a dangerous, dirty and vulnerable source of energy. This week, 10,000 American flags were planted on the National Mall, each representing Americans who have pledged to free our nation from a long and damaging cycle of dependence. As Americans look to rebuild our economy, we must consider the massive, alarming and unprecedented transfer of wealth to those who do not share our values. America's ability to underwrite our national security always had, at its heart, the pumping arteries of a vibrant economy. Unless we act soon, we will be held hostage to the rest of the world, not just for oil, but for the clean-energy technology that will power the next century of growth and prosperity. Already dependent on oil, our country needs to act now lest we become dependent on China for solar panels. A more insidious impact of our dependence is clear in America's foreign and military policy. Today we are forced to both pay and protect the nations that supply our oil, the very nations that fuel extremism around the world and turn a blind eye to terrorist funding within their own borders. That money, winding its way through shady front groups and so-called charities, ends up funding not just insurgents in Iraq, but also in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrates, in clear and often painful terms, just how unreliable our energy sources have become. We are forced to drill to the deepest depths of the ocean, to despoil the richness of our God-given natural treasures, and to rely on dangerously uncontrollable technologies. It is time for us to stand on our own — to take control of our energy — with sources that will not threaten our security, fund our enemies or force us to ignore our values. The long struggle to live up to the challenge of our values has always been difficult, but today we stand at a clear crossroads between moving beyond oil or prolonging our dependence on it. Clean, American power is possible, but only if we commit ourselves to achieving that goal. In the spirit of the holiday and in light of the tragedy in the Gulf, let us dedicate the next two decades to winning a new battle for American independence — from oil. . Nintendo Gameboy Themed Condoms

Believe it or not nerds do have sex, and when they do, they want a chose a brand that is reliable and is as nerdy as they are. That’s why Visual Communications student Ben Marsh created the fake mock-up video game themed condoms, Play. Not only does the design awesomely resembles the old school Nintendo Gameboy, but the packaging for the individual condoms resembles actual game cartridge. Each box of Play comes with 6-Varieties of Condoms: * Ribbed – The Long End of Zelda * Heat – Dong * Tingle – Bone Zone 2 * Thin – Super Mario Land of Love * X Safe – Sextris * Large – Donkey Shlong http://nerdreactor.com/2010/07/04/nintendo-gameboy-themed-condoms/ added by: NerdReactorTV

Sweet Dreams: The Sexy Adventures of a Renegade Cupcake

“Sweet Dreams” is a remarkably unexpected and absolutely hysterical stop-motion animated short film by Kirsten Lepore. The film tells the story of a stalwart cupcake yearning to find something beyond his world of sugar cube skyscrapers and frosting-covered friends. The runaway cupcake’s adventures turn into an intense bout of hot and steamy food porn, as he travels to distant shores. The sweet stuff’s sugar-cube boat is battered by the stormy seas, and that’s just the start of this astounding (flour-sifting?) journey. At one life-changing point during his stay in a foreign land, there’s some very naughty stop-motion romantic action between the cupcake and his newly beloved sexy gourd. This piece includes a number of colorful illustrations, as well as the wickedly funny animated short film. http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/07/04/sweet-dreams-the-sexy-adventures-of-… added by: disembedded

Dr Riki Ott on dispersants & what BP is hiding

“We know from Exxon Valdez that giving people hardhats instead of respirators is a very bad idea” – Riki Ott See Also: BP using dispersants to hide size of spill, and their financial liability http://current.com/news/92526824_use-of-dispersants-questioned-allegations-that-… What Mainstream Media is Not Telling You about the Gulf Oil Cleanup (NaturalNews) What surface oil dispersant for oil spills is so toxic and ineffective it has been banned in England for a decade? The one that British Petroleum (BP) is using now in the Gulf of Mexico. It's loaded with 2-butoxyethanol, which kills marine and wetland wild life while causing serious lung problems to humans! It is more toxic than the oil it purports to clean, and it simply sends the newly formed toxic globules of dispersant and oil further into the depths where it forms underwater plumes. It's like pouring paint thinner on spilled paint and letting it drip out onto the lawn and garden, except the underwater plumes of thinned oil and toxic dispersant spread onto the shore lines, wetlands and coral reefs and into the Atlantic via the Gulf Stream and beyond. Yet there are many less toxic, even 100% green, oil spill solutions available that are more effective. EPA and BP It was initially reported that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) had given BP 72 hours to change the current oil dispersant chemicals to something less toxic and more effective. After a sharp reply from BP, the EPA seems to have back pedaled claiming they only want BP to use less of it. It appears somebody with clout stepped in for BP! BP is involved with a few other large international corporations. Among them is the company that makes the toxic oil dispersant banned in England containing 2-butoxyethanol, which kills what is supposedly being protected! Richard Charter, advisor for Defenders of Wildlife, says this about the chemical dispersant being used in the Gulf: “It's a chemical that the oil industry makes to sell to itself, basically.” So in addition to siphoning some of the oil pouring from the ocean floor into tankers, oil that can be separated from the water and sold later, BP execs are enjoying financially incestuous gains. (source below) Ignored Solutions… (cont http://www.naturalnews.com/029127_Gulf_Coast_cleanup.html ) ~~~ EPA just released it's first set of findings on Corexit, here is one response: “Mobile Baykeeper Executive Director Casi Callaway said Thursday she is “disappointed” with the EPA’s methods. She pointed out, “They did the minimal testing of a limited substance. They didn’t do the test of oil and dispersants mixed with water, and they only tested shrimp and small fish. They didn’t do any field testing. They only tested in a lab.” Callaway said dispersants should not be used in the first place because oil is suspended in the water column, which not only endangers marine creatures, but also makes defense systems such as floating booms ineffective. The products do seem to bolster BP’s public image, however, according to Callaway. “The purpose is to hide it. They think if (the oil) is out of sight, people will forget about it and the problem will go away,” she said. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is somewhat complicit by making its testing data difficult to obtain, she added. http://networkedblogs.com/5sBK9 ~~~ “Corexit a know poison” The BP disaster is far worse than we are being allowed to know via mainstream news: The toxic dispersant Corexit is gasifying getting into the atmosphere to return as rain, thus and affecting people, crops, far inland. Corexit is manufactured by a company making huge profits for many admin and other bigwigs, including Warren Buffet, Al Gore, & George Soros – a listing which makes me automatically suspect that this piece may be NeoCon finger-pointing – a side-effect which would unfortunately detract from the main news here regarding the degree of disaster that’s coming. Could it be there’s actually a $$$ reason for NOT stopping the leak? It would explain why neither Sen. Cantwell or Sen. Murray called me back after I left messages with their office staffers that I had a pretty good idea for dealing with the spill – I’ve heard nada despite 3 calls to each. Anyway, the following article with extensive details and links will bring you up to speed on a major disaster and perhaps the most hideous crimes. http://ow.ly/26Tih http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS66fomgWFI&feature=youtu.be added by: samantha420

Oil Spill and the SE Florida Reef System; What’s at stake?

On April 25, 2010, just five days after the BP Deep Horizon oil rig exploded, Reef Check, The Perry Institute for Marine Science and Ocean Rehab Initiative Inc. responded to protect threatened critical wetland ecosystems. Collaboratively, these institutions of marine research and conservation developed the Pre-Oil Volunteer Survey, whose methodology is now widely used across the Gulf of Mexico and Greater Caribbean by groups including USGS, USCG, NOAA, EPA, DEP, The Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, Surfrider Foundation and others. Scientists agreed that the survey methodology must be easy to teach and understand, be at little or no cost to perform, and provide real and significant results for science. In fact, you may even own most of the equipment needed for the survey, like a camera, GPS, tape measure, magic marker and plastic cards. To date, hundreds of volunteers have surveyed critical habitats for oil-threatened species in their native wetlands (estuaries, sea grasses, mangroves, lagoons, rivers, inlets, reefs and beaches) along South Florida, from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to Indian River County. Just this week, teams surveyed reefs in Palm Beach and Martin County, and were pleased to discover a healthy reef system. Residents up and down the coast have volunteered their time to aid during the largest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history. Current and future volunteers are not only divers, but come from all backgrounds: children, elderly, activists, government employees, retired and working citizens. To support conservation efforts and learn more about the methodology and volunteer opportunities in Florida, contact William via email at www.oceanrehab.org or call 561-308-8848. added by: OceanRehabWilliam
