Fidel Castro, the controversial Cuban revolutionary turned head of state, has passed away at the age of 90. Castro brought Communism to Cuba and led the island nation through a tumultuous five decades, partially retiring from public service and handing the reins to his brother Raul in 2008. Raul’s administration issued an official statement confirming Fidel’s death just moments ago. One of the few Marxist-Leninist leaders of the Western world, Castro was a widely distrusted figure in the US. He remained ideologically at odds with the American government throughout his time in office, first Prime Minister of Cuba (from 1959 to 1976), then as the nation’s president (from 1976 to 2008). Castro remained in power as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba until 2011. Throughout the majority of Castro’s reign, the United States government enforced a trade embargo with Cuba, a result of both anti-Communist sentiment in the States and lingering wariness over the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Both incidents served as defining events of President John F. Kennedy’s brief time in office and helped to characterize Castro as a dangerous military presence operating just off the coast of Florida in the mind’s of America’s populace. However, the reality of Castro’s reign was very different from the way his regime was portrayed in the American press. Derided as an autocrat who trampled civil rights throughout his reign by some, Castro is still hailed as a hero by many who have lived under his power for the bulk of the past 60 years. He cut a larger-than-life figure with his military fatigues and ubiquitous cigar and for many, his image is inextricably linked with the caricature of authoritarian strongmen. Tensions between Cuba and the US ran so high in the decades after Castro assumed power that was only when the Obama administration began to lift regulations in 2015 that Americans were once again permitted to freely travel to and from Cuba. Several embargo restrictions remain in place, and the future of relations between the two nations remains very much in question. Castro’s legacy will no doubt be debated among historians and political scientists for many years to come. But regardless of one’s feelings on the iconic leader’s politics, he was, and will no doubt remain, one of the recognizable political figures of the 20th Century. Rita Ora is most definitely siding with Justin Bieber in the wake of him punching a fan in Barcelona . There has been a mixed response to Justin punching the 18-year-old fan who put his head in the window of the vehicle the singing sensation was in. “I’m not speaking for anybody, but knowing him and his incredible background, I know how it feels to be uncomfortable and scared,” Rita revealed. “I feel like anyone who had a hand in their face is going to protect themselves,” she added. “There are definitely moments where [fans] cross over the boundary of it becoming almost scary.” Ora definitely has a point. Justin Bieber PUNCHES Fan in Barcelona If you recall, Ora had a scary encounter when her home was robbed last year while she and her sister were inside. Celebrities are dealing with fans these days who just go way too far to get close to their idol. Justin is one of the most popular people on the planet, and he seems to always find himself in trouble with fans who completely cross the line. The 22-year-old even went as far as canceling meets and greets from his Purpose World Tour. Bieber said at the time that the experience of meeting fans left him drained because he worried about their expectations. However, this came on the heels of a security concern, so the timing pretty much confirmed it was down to the security issue. Fans love to meet their favorite celebrities, but the few who take it too far can ruin it for everyone. Rita is not the only celebrity to jump to Justin’s defense. David Hasselhoff confirmed that he was on Team Justin when Piers Morgan brought up the matter on the Good Morning Britain . What do you think about all of this? Sound off below! In the week since Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds exchanged vows, their fans have seen next to nothing of the gorgeous, super-private newlyweds … until now! Check out this photo that surfaced of the two of them kissing the day after they got married in South Carolina. They look very much happy and in love. Also, it looks like Blake’s wedding ring is not small … The ring, which was designed by jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, has not been present in any photos from the set of Gossip Girl , which Blake films in New York. Then again, Serena’s not married … at least not at the moment. Coincidentally, a secret wedding involving Blake’s character is the rumored plot of the Oct. 8 premiere! Art imitating life? Days after launching an injunction in a civil case against Closer magazine, Kate Middleton and Prince William have filed a criminal complaint in a French court. Seeking justice against those who disseminated Kate Middleton topless photos last week, the complaint asks prosecutors to charge the paparazzo behind the shots. Of course, there was no name listed in the royals’ criminal complaint, as it’s unclear who was responsible for taking the pics published in the celebrity gossip mag. Under French law, those convicted of violating Will and Kate’s privacy – the unnamed paparazzo and Closer ‘s editor, in theory – could face thousands of euros in fines. A possible one-year jail sentence is also on the table, albeit unlikely. As it happened, Closer removed the pics from its website on Friday shortly after being sued, and before the criminal complaint was even filed by the royals. However, Closer ‘s Italian sister publication, Chi, ran a 26-page spread today of Kate Middleton nude and topless images, many of them the same as Closer ‘s. A statement released by Mondadori, the group that owns Chi and Closer, defended the decisions made by the respective editors to run a report on the pictures: “The publisher respects the arguments put forward by the editors.” Watch Closer ‘s editor stand by the decision after the jump …
Sorry to hear that Chris Brown will continue to remain under the watchful eye of a probation officer as he works to complete the terms of his sentence for beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. Chris wasn’t present, but his attorney asked that Brown’s term on supervised probation be ended because of his good behavior. Superior Court Judge George Lomeli agreed with prosecutors that despite his good behavior, he should continue to report to a probation officer in his home state of Virginia. Brown is in the midst of a remarkable comeback, with the singer set to perform at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night where he is nominated for three Grammys. Brown’s probation officer wrote in a report that the singer has been truthful with officers, passed all required drug tests and “has made great strides” while under probation supervision. He has completed half of the six months’ worth of roadside cleanup, graffiti removal and other manual labor that he was ordered to do after pleading guilty to attacking Rihanna. Brown was ordered to serve five years on probation. The judge scheduled another progress hearing for July 10.
