Hillary Clinton is struggling to come to grips with the idea that Donald Trump is U.S. President-Elect , but she's getting on with her life too. Wednesday, the former Secretary of State made her first public appearance since the stunning 2016 election results of last week. At a Children's Defense Fund event in Washington, D.C., there was no avoiding the fact that she was still reeling from the experience. “I know that over the past week a lot of people have asked themselves whether America is the country we thought it was,” she said. “The divisions laid bare by this election run deep.” “But please listen to me when I say this: America is worth it. Our children are worth it. Believe in our country, we fight for our values.” “[We] never, ever give up.” The fact that we know who won the popular vote by more than 1 million votes is likely of zero solace to our nation's 42nd FLOTUS. “”There have been a few times this past week when all I wanted to do was just to curl up with a good book or our dogs,” she said. “And never leave the house again.” In that sentiment, she is far from alone. No matter how conciliatory and hopeful she may be about a Trump presidency, this has got to hurt. See highlights of Clinton’s speech below …
