Cannes Director: Story-driven Filmmaking In U.S. "Tough"

L to R: Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, John Hillcoat and Mia Wasikowska in Cannes Saturday. Born in Australia and raised in Canada, John Hillcoat spent a lot of time in America growing up taking family vacations through the American south, which provides the backdrop for his Cannes competition feature Lawless , which will have its world premiere here Saturday night. Starring Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska the film is inspired by the true-life stories of Matt Bpondurant’s own family in his novel, The Wettest County in the World and adapted for the screen by rocker Nick Cave. Lawless centers on the Bondurant brothers, gangsters who sought success bootlegging in Prohibition-era Virginia. In Cannes to push the feature which will be released by The Weinstein Company in the U.S. late summer, Hillcoat sounded off on the arduous undertaking of film that is story-driven and not reliant solely on gimmickry. Without mentioning any specific examples, he lamented that the business of motion pictures has crowded out filmmakers who use plot as a vehicle for entertainment. “I’m interested in stories in America and Australia or anywhere really, but the state of this is pretty tough now,” he said. “My world [of filmmaking] is medium budgets with characters and story. Those are not words you can use right now in the U.S. unfortunately.” The director of The Road (2009) and The Proposition (2005) and a host of music videos ranging from Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bush, Depeche Mode as well as Nick Cave said there is one medium that dominates storytelling, at least in America. “Television has picked up characters and drama,” he said. “Hopefully this will filter back into films once again.” Though his story is set against Depression-era Appalachia, Hillcoat sees Lawless as a parallel to a litany of social crises that have arisen in subsequent decades after the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution effectively ended the federal prohibition against alcohol. “There are a lot of parallels to today with the economic crisis, today’s Mexican cartels, heroin in New York, crack and cocaine in the ’80s and the war on drugs. All this feeds back to Prohibition in the ’30s.”

Chris Christie Will NOT Run For President

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced today that he would not seek the Republican presidential nomination for president, saying “now is not my time.” Urged to run by many Republicans of late, Christie made his FINAL decision last night, “knowing exactly what I wanted to do” for the first time in weeks. The New Jersey governor vowed not to run approximately 700 times before, but “felt an obligation to earnestly consider” the appeals of “serious people.” Chris Christie: Get the Hell Off the Beach! He said he “explored the options” and thought about running but “in the end, what I’ve always felt was the right decision remains the right decision today.” “I have a commitment to New Jersey that I will not abandon,” Chris said during a lengthy, nearly hour-long press conference, adding with typical humor: “New Jersey, whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me.” No matter where you are on the political spectrum, this decision is disappointing for the entertainment value alone. A rarity in his profession, Christie truly tells it like it is … and bluntly at that. He does not mince words. See above and below. Chris Christie Yelling at Reporter

Kat Von D to Release First Album (Seriously)

Guess Kat Von D’s relationship with Jesse James (they broke up a second time last month) provided too much potential not to be used somewhere. She’s coming out with a debut album! Seriously, she is . “I’ve been passionate about music all my life,” Von D told E! at the Rage video game launch in L.A. “I’ve been playing classical piano since I was six. So I understand the form, but it will be fun to be able to translate a message.” What is Kat Von D’s approach to making music, exactly? “I think it’s much like tattooing or the TV show or makeup, my clothing line, fashion,” she said. “All those things, they’re just different outlets to be able to be creative. So music, I think, it’s just going to be one of those things.” Sure it is. As for the sound, Von D says it will be “more on the dark, more tragically romantic” side, so kind of a la Depeche Mode and the Cure, only edgier. Only one question: Where do we pre-order??! Conan O’Brien Might Reveal the Name of His TBS Show Tomorrow

“I was going to announce the name of my new show today,” Conan O’B rien tweeted this afternoon, “but my lawyers tell me The Return of Nanny McPhee is taken. Tune in tomorrow.” The lameness of that joke aside, it appears the former Tonight Show host is ready to pick a name for his currently untitled TBS talk show. Did Conan wait until September 1 so he could call the program The Jay Leno Hates Children Hour , or is it just a happy coincidence that his non-disparagement agreement runs out tomorrow ? Stay tuned… [ @ConanOBrien ]

REVIEW: George Clooney, The American Prove They Do Make Movies Like They Used To

Anton Corbijn’s The American looks and feels like a movie made by a filmmaker who hasn’t been to the movies since the ’70s — and I mean that as the highest compliment. This is Corbijn’s second feature: His first was the elegiac and gorgeously shot (by Martin Ruhe) Control, based on the life story of Ian Curtis, lead singer of the influential and much-loved Manchester band Joy Division, who committed suicide at age 23 in 1980. Before Corbijn was a filmmaker, or even a director of videos for the likes of U2 and Depeche Mode, he was a photographer specializing in rock ‘n’ roll types as subjects; he had photographed Curtis and the other members of Joy Division early in his career, having left his native Holland for England because, as he’s said in interviews, he wanted “to be where that music comes from.”
