Better Had: Pepsi Announces They’re Pulling Their Headazz Kendall Jenner Ad

Pepsi Pulls Kendall Jenner AD After Backlash PepsiCo has apologized and pulled the controversial commercial that caused outrage on social media in the last 24 hours, Reuters reports. The ad trivialized issues surrounding racially motivated injustices happening nationally, in places like Baltimore, Ferguson and elsewhere. It stars reality star Kendall Jenner in what looks like a Party City wig, catering to cops at a fake protest. SMH. “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding”, the company said in a statement. “Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting any further rollout.” Well, clearly you missed with flying colors, PepsiCo. When Reuters tried to reach out to reps fro Kendall, no one responded. How convenient. Who thought it was a good idea to appropriate injustice anyway??

Exclusive: Luvvie Ajayi Talks Shondaland, Her Best-Selling Book, AT&T Partnership & More!

Luvvie Dishes On Her AT&T Partnership & More! For years, internet famous creatives have struggled to flip Likes, Retweets and Shares into viable careers outside of their Wifi connection. And they’ve tried everything from freelancing to podcasting to YouTubing to frisbeeing away quality content for free without ever breaking into the impossibly competitive digital media industry. At times, it seemed impossible to turn tweets into dollars–rent-paying, food-buying, self-supporting dollars–until ambitious tastemakers like Luvvie Ajayi proved you could flip Twitter fame into offline power moves with golden partnership opportunities. Best known for her wildly popular blog Awesomely Luvvie and must-see tweets , Luvvie created her very own lane as a fiercely funny Black woman in a very white and unfunny space making her an essential leader of the new-age diversity movement. We chatted with the hilarious Twitter maven-turned-best-selling author (“I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual”) who recently hosted a beautifully melaniny soirée for top influencers at the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit ( powered by AT&T ) in Phoenix. “The Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit already attracts amazing women and everybody I invited said yes. So, we had Bozoma Saint John from Apple, Elaine Welteroth from Teen Vogue, Debra M. Chase who is a major TV producer, Nina Shaw who’s an attorney–the who’s who of Black Hollywood… AT&T asked me ‘what would you serve people who want to come to your house for dinner’ and I said rice and great seafood and red velvet cupcakes and they made it happen!” Most aspiring influencers can only dream of reaching Luvvie’s level of eSuccess that sparked a friendship with beloved Shondaland Mayor Shonda Rhimes who loved her deliciously witty  Scandal recaps and offered the partnership of a lifetime. “Shonda loved my book and thought it lended itself to television so I’m partnering with Shondaland and hopefully it becomes a television series” Her bookshelf-worthy best-seller  I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual nudged her into the mainstream where she flourished with a universally enjoyable funny but the journey wasn’t easy. “I got the idea to write this book in August 2014 because somebody plagiarized my work and took about three paragraphs of it and put it in something they were writing and didn’t give me credit… I had a brainstorm session with myself where I just tried to figure out the things I want to write and points I want to make–I wrote a proposal for it to my book agent, sent the proposal out and it got bought by Henry publishing… I wrote this book over 5 months in 6 or 7 countries, 4 continents and I was just very clear about what I wanted to write, I had my proposal as my outline and when it came time to actually write it wasn’t as difficult because I already knew what I wanted to say” Proudly Black and magical, Luvvie is thrilled that her voice touched those who don’t necessarily look like her but still relate nonetheless. It feels good to know that my writing crosses all types of age and gender and geographic boundaries, for me, it’s important to not just be preaching to the choir… I always feel firm that I’m a black woman first, I write for Black women, but it’s a huge compliment to know that other people can still relate to my writing” With success, comes waves of success-thirsty strangers who want to know your every secret to winning and it’s always very simple. “I’ve done what’s authentic to me and I’ve done the things that I’ve loved doing for a long time. I’ve been blogging for 14 years so people see the success that’s happening now, it’s not overnight, it’s not a 1-tip thing,  I’ve just been doing this writing online for a long time” What’s NEXT for digital media dynamo Luvvie Ajayi? Well… “I’m gonna keep doing the things I love…working with Shondaland to develop the show, doing more speaking engagements, just stuff that I enjoy” You can purchase Luvvie’s best-seller here , read her addictive blog here and follow her on Twitter here . Special thanks to AT&T for its commitment to supporting Black excellence. Awesomely Luvvie/AT&T

A “Lil Positivity”: HGTV And V103 Radio Host Egypt Sherrod Gives Back To Teens In ATL

Egypt Sherrod is all about being a great role model for the next generation of media-savvy professionals. Through her non-profit organization, the Egypt Cares Family Foundation, the Radio and TV Host focuses on providing resources and motivation that supports families on their journey to financial literacy, health awareness, higher education, and successful communication within the family unit. Fifteen deserving teens from communities throughout the metro Atlanta area and surrounding counties were selected after each submitted a 250 word essay detailing why they should be including in the media bootcamp. The participants were carefully selected to engage in an intense program giving them a birdseye view of the variety of specialized careers available in the media industry. During the rigorous two-day camp the all participants were given in-depth tours and tutorials from news anchors, journalists, television producers and behind-the-scenes executives at major media companies. “I am overwhelmed with pride by the group of bright and ambitious teens who joined us for this year’s Rising Media Stars Bootcamp. To see how eager they were to soak up all the knowledge and information that was put before them in two action-packed days was very inspiring! It does my heart good to know that I am able to use my position within the media industry to help gifted young people,” said Egypt Sherrod, HGTV’s Property Virgins Host & V103 Atlanta on-air personality and founder of the Egypt Cares Family Foundation. “Egypt’s Rising Media Stars Bootcamp was created with the intention of positively influencing young people who have a serious interest in pursuing a career in the media arts. Egypt and I always want to use the professional relationships we’ve built over nearly 20 year apiece in radio, TV, publishing and digital media to pay it forward and give access to those who may not otherwise have a vehicle to pursue their dreams,” added Amber Noble-Garland, CEO of I For Talent Management and Chairperson of the Egypt Cares Family Foundation. ‘House’ Goes Out With A Bang

Series finale, ‘Everybody Dies,’ was flawed yet moving. By Tami Katzoff Hugh Laurie in the “House” finale Photo: FOX In the eight years “House” was on the air , the title character had plenty of opportunities to die: He’d been shot, electrocuted, in insulin shock and cardiac arrest and involved in a horrific bus crash, and he’d taken enough drugs to kill him many times over. Another chance came during Monday night’s series finale — and it was a big one. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!) The episode, fittingly titled “Everybody Dies,” starts off with the doctor lying half-conscious in a burning building after a heroin binge. Beside him lies his Patient of the Week, already dead. We know that he’s facing six months in prison for violating his parole, and his best bud, James Wilson, is dying of cancer. Things do not bode well for Dr. House. The story of the final hour of “House” does not unfold chronologically; we learn how House arrived at his precarious position through flashbacks. His expired patient had originally come to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital as a drug-seeker, but House quickly found evidence on the man’s body of yet another medical mystery to solve. Throughout the episode we see House being House: brilliant, manipulative and desperately unhappy. When he’s MIA from the hospital, Doctors Wilson and Foreman learn that he’s gone to score heroin from his patient, and they track him down. But they arrive at a building already consumed in flames. It’s too late for House — or is it? As in several episodes in previous seasons, various characters from House’s past visit his subconscious, urging him to get up, get out and live. But there’s an explosion, followed by a funeral. More familiar faces show up to eulogize House. They say nice things, but when it’s Wilson’s turn, he speaks the hard truth: “He was a bitter jerk who liked making people miserable.” Then we have our Tom Sawyer moment. While expounding on House’s faults at House’s funeral, Wilson gets a text that reads, “Shut up, you idiot.” By the end of the episode we learn that House has essentially faked his own death so that he can be by his best friend’s side during the last few months of his life. In doing so he has sacrificed the ability to do the thing he loves the most, solving puzzles. It’s a sweet and moving episode, but certainly not among the series’ best. There are too many implausibles: How does a crippled, drugged man escape an exploding building without a scratch? And how did he manage to switch his own dental records with those of his dead patient? Things like that don’t happen, even on “House.” Bringing back old favorites like Sela Ward, Anne Dudek, Jennifer Morrison and Kal Penn was a nice touch, but it made the absence of Lisa Edelstein’s Cuddy even more glaring. As House’s longtime boss and short-time girlfriend, Dr. Cuddy was a significant presence during seven seasons of the show. She should have been at that funeral. Like House himself, the show’s last hurrah was deeply flawed. But the final scene, with Hugh Laurie uttering his last line as House (“Cancer’s boring”) before he and Wilson ride off on motorcycles to who-knows-where, was damn near perfect.

During “MTV First,” the rock stars will also answer your Twitter questions and dish on the latest news. “What’s interesting about this video is that we’re really trying to capture a live kind of element with the band playing very similarly to how we would perform live,” Bennington told MTV News recently when we were lucky enough to visit the video’s set. “The fact that we’re playing broken down, kind of like we’re playing live brings that organic vibe to the video, makes for this really cool almost plugged-in look that we have.” “As the band has gotten older lyrically, my favorite [songs] over the past couple years have a lot of layers to them,” Shinoda said of the band’s evolution. “Part of that comes from the fact that all along, Chester and I, we have different life experiences and we tend to write the lyrics together, so although we’re writing one song, we’re coming at it from two different experience points. He may be writing about one thing he’s thinking and I might be writing about something completely different.” The global partnership positions “BURN IT DOWN” to reach more than 600 million households around the world via MTV’s global network of more than 60 channels and over 300 digital media properties in 150 plus territories. Knopf Editor Makes Excellent Case for Needing Editors in Poorly Written Post About Needing Editors [Fuckups]

If you wrote a piece for the Huffington Post entitled Do You Really Need an Editor at a Publishing House? , you’d make a strong case, right? The answer, as evidenced by Knopf editor Carole Baron , is a resounding absolutely . Besides the fact that no good editor in their right mind would tell someone trying to make a coherent argument for their job to write a post so explicitly arguing for their job , they wouldn’t let them title it Do You Really Need an Editor at a Publishing House? nor would they let them publish it on the Huffington Post . Where content mostly goes to die. Unless someone else picks it up for being extraordinary in some way, which Baron’s post most certainly is . Clunky Prose: It starts in the lede. Do you really need an editor at a publishing house? I am really annoyed. All this talk about digital. Not to nitpick, but why not? Besides the fact that the text itself is pretty misshapen on the site —a good web editor would’ve taken care of that—the first sentence is also the title of the post (redundancy), the second sentence is a wooden declarative that could simply be spiced up by making a contraction out of “I” and “am,” and the third sentence is a jagged fragment that doesn’t explain what the “talk” is nor what kind of “digital” she’s referring to. Yet most of you are cognizant individuals, and you know she’s referring to digital media, and that the “talk” of which is some idle chatter we’re probably going to learn about. Assuming readers can make it past the first three sentences. Clunky Pronouns : The writer said: “Why not? There is no editing anymore.” Not only is that not true, but it certainly didn’t understand the complex role of the editor in a publishing house. First of all, what kind of braindead company is Baron keeping? Jesus. Also, I know editors often think of writers less as people and more like book-writing-creatures who cost money, but referring to one as “it” seems mildly unnecessary. That is, of course, unless Baron was talking about the writer’s statement, which can only “understand” something in the figurative or poetic sense. Which she already lost credit for in the first sentence, regardless of which, that intention just patently isn’t the case. Finally, who refers to their own job as complex ? Lady, you’re not a machinist. Misspellings and Title Form : Jonathon Gallassi’s: “There Is More to Publishing Than Meets the Screen” in the New York Times, January 2, 2010, expressed it logically and eloquently. “Jonathon Gallassi” has a name, and it isn’t spelled like that. It’s Jonathan Galassi . He’s not exactly a name you want to spell wrong, as he’s the the President and Publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Also, New York Times should be italicized, and from a later sentence in the piece, “short changed ” is one word. WTF? : “And I am happy to say that as many as there are who complain, there are just as many who acknowledge the good work that editors can and do for a writer.” As many what, exactly? People? Penguins? If they’re penguins, they don’t acknowledge what an editor “can and do for a writer” so much as they acknowledge what an editor can do for a writer. Credit where credit’s due: we cribbed this item from a tipster…who wrote “makes the care for” instead of “makes the case for” in their original tip. And please , like we don’t have our fair share of typos on this site even with an editor. There’s probably one in this post! The difference between Baron and I, though, is that I’m not trying to make a case for an editor. My life is a case for editors. Ryan Tate put it best earlier this evening via email: Who will edit the editors? And who will edit the people who call for editing of the editors? Everything must eventually be published via wiki, is my point. A wiki that no one is qualified to edit. Then again, she could just be playing with our heads, as this might be part of an elaborate “meta” campaign for her job, in which case: golden. But that probably isn’t the case. She’s probably just an editor who needs a good editor. Or a good writer.
