Edward Norton Uses Social Networking To ‘Do Something’ With Crowdrise

Edward Norton Hopes To ‘Do Something’ With Crowdrise By Kara Warner Edward Norton Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images Edward Norton isn’t cut from the typical Hollywood actor cloth. The often stoic, socially conscious actor has used his celebrity for good for years. This week Norton launched yet another charitable-minded effort, Crowdrise, which brings the “power of crowd-sourcing and the fun of social networking to fundraising and volunteerism.” Following the success of his Maasai Marathon fundraising website for last year’s New York City Marathon, Norton and his partners, online retailers/ tech experts Robert and Jeffrey Wolfe, were approached by a variety of individuals and organizations asking for help in creating online campaigns. “We found ourselves talking and saying we could just build this out to a really user-friendly, open-source site and just share it [with everyone],” he told MTV News. “We could basically take the work we did and engineer a website where anybody can kind of plug in their own identity, their own cause and do this themselves. And we got kind of excited about that idea because we just thought even more than raising money ourselves, wouldn’t it be awesome if we made it really, really easy for other people?” Norton confessed that before the Marathon campaign he’d stayed away from Facebook and Twitter, but that afterward he saw the potential of using social networking for good. “It was the first I got a taste of the fact that the idea that you could maybe actually use that stuff for some substantive things, not just for social chatter,” he said. “And the marathon campaign was like a confirmation of that to me. So in a way Crowdrise was our attempt to make a social networking that is motivating people to act and actually do something, but with all the fun of social networking. So I think it’s pretty hip; it’s pretty fun.” Speaking of social networking, Norton is a relatively new Twitter user but follows an eclectic mix of people — Tony Robbins and Sasha Grey, for example. “I’ve never even met Tony,” Norton admitted of that particular connection. “But we have a mutual friend and when I was doing the Boston marathon campaign my friend said, ‘You know, Tony would really like this and probably twitter about it and he has, like, a million and a half followers.’ So I e-mailed him and he was really really generous about it. … Sasha, let’s see, my friends, the guys who wrote ‘Rounders’ wrote ‘The Girlfriend Experience.’ And so when I did the Boston marathon they said, ‘Hey, you know, we know Sasha and she’s got followers on her thing,’ and so same thing [as with Robbins].” Not that he wants to get crazy with pulling in more followers, but Norton said he’d like to fill his ranks on Twitter like Justin Bieber, CNN, and other popular accounts. “I can only dream of having Ashton Kutcher’s millions of followers. Or who else, Puffy &#8212l Puffy’s got a lot. Russell Simmons has got a lot.” Norton also made sure to point out to the “MTV crowd” that he and his Crowdrise team have made their website easy to use, with a little fun built in. “If you go to the homepage … the second paragraph there, it says, ‘You can go here to see how Crowdrise works,’ and then, you see it says, ‘Go here if you want to see an even more beautiful picture of a napkin.’ Awesome, right? Do you know that — this is totally not me making a joke — we’ve gotten thousands of pictures of napkins sent in to us. You have no idea how many people have sent us their pictures of a napkin.” The Academy Award-nominated actor has also recruited a slew of other famous faces to get involved by putting up their own pages on the site: Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell and Will Ferrell. “I think this site is the most fun that you can have making a difference without, you know, taking illegal substances,” Norton said. That, and the slogan on the homepage reads: “If you don’t give back no one will like you.” What do you think of Edward Norton’s Crowdrise idea? Let us know in the comments below! Courtney Love Gives Frances Bean Boyfriend Advice Via Twitter

Hole frontwoman reaches out to estranged daughter, 140 characters at a time. By James Montgomery Courtney Love Photo: Andy Sheppard/ Redferns Early Monday morning, Courtney Love had what she referred to as a “Twitter relapse,” and, boy, was it a doozy. While most of the world was asleep, the Hole frontwoman — who, in recent weeks, has embarked on a rather thorough career rehabilitation plan — launched an all-out Twit-missive toward her estranged daughter, Frances Bean, of whom she lost legal guardianship late last year. Love tweeted Frances nearly 40 times over the course of an hour. In the tweets , Love gives her daughter a whole lot of relationship advice (“don’t have an assistant as a boyfriend”), begs her to “clear my name,” apologizes for not marrying a man who may very well be Edward Norton, says she misses spending time with her and concludes by saying she’s going to go chant (and delete “half” of the messages). The impetus behind the outburst was apparently a photo Love saw of Frances holding hands with her boyfriend backstage at last month’s Coachella festival. “Bean, I saw you at Coachella with [her boyfriend, who may be named Isaiah] in a pic. He looks sweet and like your dad actually,” Love wrote. “I hope he takes care of you and you look beautiful, even though you have an angry furrow. … I think that’s called your ‘lawyer lie’ furrow.” And from there, Love started picking up steam, writing that she “won’t tolerate” being named on “worst mothers lists” and that she plans on fighting for Frances, even if it means going to court. “The last thing I look forward to in this life is any trial, but I’m a good mother and I won’t allow you to believe such nonsense, so suit up,” she wrote. “I love you, sorry to take to the world wide Ethernet, but I love you and I don’t know how to tell you without telling one of the pack, madly.” After that, she went back to weighing in on Frances’ relationship with her boyfriend, warning that if he treats her wrong, “I’ll get him.” “There’s plenty of fish in the sea lining up for both of us, who will treat us like princesses and not 2nd class citizens, or damaged goods,” she wrote. “I know you have that in you, if he’s not treating you like the goddess you are, baby, get the hell out, do not settle. Give them a little time, and if they don’t man up, then woman out. That’s my advice to you. And don’t date a slave, or an assistant, that’s no fun.” Love then apologized to Frances “for not marrying E.” In the late ’90s, she dated actor Edward Norton and was reportedly engaged to him, so that may be to whom she’s referring. Then she rattled off a list of do’s and don’ts for making a relationship work, including: “Make sure you laugh a lot, and try to have a spiritual connection,” “Don’t get him presents and don’t vie for him, don’t over text,” and “don’t take any sh– from that boy. … If he’s not a prince and a MAN, he doesn’t deserve you, period.” Love concluded by writing that she “prays” for Frances every day, and that she “miss[es] [her] more than anyone has ever missed anyone.” She apologized for using Twitter to reach out to her daughter and said that she did so because “the boy stuff you need to hear only from me. … Wendy [Kurt Cobain’s mother, and Frances’ court-appointed guardian ] is too boy crazy.” A spokesperson for Love had no comment about the incident when contacted by MTV News. Does Courtney actually have some good points in her messages to Frances Bean? What would you do if your mother tweeted you advice this way? Sound off in the comments. ‘The Avengers’ Is ‘All About The Cast, Louis Leterrier Says

‘Clash of the Titans’ director describes his hypothetical approach if hired to helm the superhero movie. By Josh Wigler Louis Leterrier Photo: MTV News Marvel Studios has recruited an impressive assortment of filmmakers such as Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston, but the studio has yet to announce a director for “The Avengers,” the big-budget superhero movie set to debut in the summer of 2012. On Monday (March 22), “Clash of the Titans” director Louis Leterrier told MTV News he is on Marvel’s short list of potential directors for the film , thanks in no small part to his previous work on “The Incredible Hulk.” While his attachment is far from official, Leterrier already has several ideas about how he would tackle “The Avengers” if hired. “It all starts with the ensemble, the cast,” the director told MTV News of his hypothetical approach. “It’s all about the cast. It’s all about the characters. You have to find the way to enter the movie through the cast.” If it’s all about the cast, then Leterrier is in luck. In addition to working with big-name directors, Marvel boasts a notable group of actors, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Edward Norton as Hulk and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Chris Evans is the reported front-runner for the role of Captain America. “With ‘Avengers,’ it would be a little different, because a lot of the cast would have been cast by different directors from other movies,” Leterrier acknowledged, “but you can still bring everybody together. That’s what we did that was great on ‘Clash of the Titans.’ For the first three weeks, we brought everybody into a room and we workshopped the movie.” While Leterrier isn’t a lock for the “Avengers” job, he has at least one Hollywood insider in his corner: Sam Worthington, the leading man in Leterrier’s “Titans.” Worthington, no stranger to comic book fare having once been connected to “The First Avenger: Captain America,” told MTV that Leterrier would bring several worthy qualities to “The Avengers.” “There’s action. He throws a camera around like no one,” said Worthington, a self-described fanboy. “He does bring people together. He’s worked with Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, William Hurt, Edward Norton — he’s worked with some big boys. Plus, he’s a fan. He’s like me! We watched some trailers the other day at ShoWest, and me and him were nudging each other because we’re fans. We make movies that we would want to go and see.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
