Hugh Hefner: I Love Crystal Harris!

We are not traditional. So said Crystal Harris to People when asked about her relationship with Hugh Hefner. The 24-year old wasn’t even referring to the age difference between her and her 84-year old fiance, however. She was simply recounting how Hefner proposed, placing her giant ring inside a Little Mermaid music box and not getting down on one knee. Hefner, meanwhile, describes Crystal as “totally devoted,” adding: “Her priorities are pretty much our relationship, No. 1 and No. 2 and 3, and you don’t always find that. Despite the age disparity, the truth of the matter is we have a great deal in common, we really complement one another, we have a wonderful time together, and I love her.” What else can you ask of the couple, who met at the Playboy Mansion in 2008 and bonded over their shared psychology majors in college? Harris has turned around Hefner’s opinion on marriage, as the magazine founder admits he always thought “people start to take one another for granted” once they’re hitched. “I just simply found myself in a relationship with Crystal in which I felt, quite frankly, the opposite seemed to be true – that the more committed to one another we were, the closer we got, and the more we loved one another, and I just think this one, for me, will be the exception to the rule.” Isn’t that sweet? Totally gross and nauseating, considering the pair’s ages… but also sweet.

TRAGEDY: Six Teenagers Drown As Others Can Only Watch

Six teenagers drowned Monday when they accidentally stumbled down a 18-foot sinkhole. None knew how to swim. Once one fell in, they all were dragged in trying to save each other. A friend of the families' stated, “None of us could swim,” the 38-year-old told the newspaper. “They were yelling 'help me, help me. Somebody please help me.' It was nothing I could do but watch them drown one by one.” This is a true tragedy and so sad for this to happen on Summer vacation. …………………… More at the link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38533071/ns/us_news-life added by: Aether_Vitae

Democrat-Backed Terror Bill Would ‘Gut Miranda Rights’

A bill that would give law enforcement more leeway during interrogations of people deemed a public security risk would “gut” the rights afforded to people who have been arrested, critics say. The bill, put forward at the end of last week by US House Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), appears to have the unofficial backing of the Obama administration, at least in principle. The Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention and Prosecution Act of 2010 would extend to four days the period of time that law enforcement has to question a terrorist suspect before bringing the suspect before a judge. Currently, as Schiff explains in a press statement, officials have six hours to present a suspect before a judge. Statements taken after that time would be inadmissible. Schiff's bill would give interrogators four days, provided the US attorney general or Director of National Intelligence sign off on it. The bill also includes a clause expressing Congress' belief that authorities can delay reading a national security suspect's Miranda rights “for as long as is necessary.” In his efforts, Schiff appears to have the unofficial backing of Attorney General Eric Holder. In May, in the wake of the Times Square bombing attempt, Holder said he wanted Congress to modify the public-safety exception to Miranda rights to make it easier to interrogate terrorists. (The Supreme Court has ruled that Miranda rights can be overlooked in certain national security situations, but backers of new legislation say the exception is not large enough.) In TV interviews, Holder said he wanted to see an expansion of the exception to Miranda rights, and that he would work with Congress to make that happen. Schiff told Politico that he got “no formal endorsement” from the Obama administration for his bill, but Politico reports that the Department of Justice is reviewing the legislation. Blogger Marcy Wheeler calls Schiff's proposed law a “gutting of Miranda rights.” She points to comments by Ben Wittes of the Brookings Institution, who supports the legislation and said it should “focus more on suspects who pose a national security threat rather than those sought in connection with particular terrorism-related crimes,” according to Politico. To Wheeler, that suggests that many more people than just terrorism suspects could be caught in the new rules. “So can an environmental activist lose Miranda rights under this bill?” Wheeler asks. “Can Quakers?” Ken Gude of the Center for American Progress described the bill to Politico as “a proposed solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. … Whatever the political theater surrounding Miranda warnings, the FBI obtained valuable intelligence information from both the underwear and Times Square bombers under the existing rules.” (a little more @ link) added by: Omnomynous

Salon Writer Wants More Abortion on TV

What does Salon think American TV needs more of? Abortion, and lots of it. In a July 20 “Broadsheet” article , Salon writer Mary Elizabeth Williams addressed Fox’s decision to release the highly controversial “Family Guy” abortion episode as a stand-alone DVD feature this September. Williams crassly compared the comedy show’s efforts to make money off a “Banned From TV” episode to “having an abortion and getting your baby too.” The episode’s controversy revolved around character Lois Griffin questioning whether to go through with a pregnancy as a surrogate mother for a couple who died in a car crash. Williams used the network’s move as a springboard for her real complaint: the lack of abortion on American airwaves. Williams called TV a “timid” medium for “barely” discussing abortion, saying it was “insane” that TV could introduce viewers to the Dharma Initiative in “Lost” but couldn’t confront the “legally acceptable procedure” of abortion. Aside from the “Family Guy” episode, Williams mentioned 10 shows that “managed to slip” abortion through to viewers but criticized their evasive treatment of reproductive choice, with the exception of “Friday Night Lights.” Not surprisingly, Williams joined the flock of media that praised “FNL,” noting how “encouraging” the show was in its inclusion of “sensitivity and mixed feelings” for abortion. Meanwhile, Williams disparaged the other shows for giving their characters a change of heart towards abortion. After mentioning abortion scenes on “Sex and the City” and “Felicity,” Williams mockingly portrayed the characters’ sudden pro-life decisions as “last-minute realization(s) of the magic of motherhood.”

Taylor Swift Announces New Album Title, Release Date

Following an incredible 2009, Taylor Swift took some time off . But the singer is ready to take the music world by storm again, and has announced details for her upcoming album: It will be titled “Speak Now.” It will be released on October 25. Why that title? Swift answer the question in a live Web chat today, telling fans it “pertains to the album as a concept, and as an entire theme of the record, more than I can even tell you.” Taylor added that she’s been penning singles for the album since “Fearless” came out in 2008. She said. “Thankfully, in the past two years I’ve experienced a lot of things that I’ve been dying to write about. A lot of things that I’ve wanted to say in the moment that I didn’t… Track by track, each song is a different confession to a different person.” The first song off the CD will hit the radio in mid-August. Titled “Mine,” Swift says it’s about “my tendency to run from love. It’s a recent tendency. Every example of love in my life has ended in goodbye. The song is about finding the exception to that.” We’re just sad that exception didn’t include Taylor Lautner . ** In other upcoming album news, David Archuleta has already revealed the released date for his next CD.

REVIEW: Actors Might Give Up on Eclipse, But Fans Won’t

It’s all too tempting to look down on the Twilight movie series — based on Stephenie Meyer’s explosively popular series of novels — as quickie pictures designed to herd in large audiences of indiscriminate, ticket-buying, Robert Pattinson-and/or-Taylor Lautner-loving teen- and tweenage girls. And with the exception of the first movie in the series, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, that’s exactly what they are. The real horror isn’t simply that these movies are bad — plenty of us were raised on, and loved, junk movies and crap TV. It’s that the folks at the top don’t think teen and tween audiences deserve better. The latest installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, directed by David Slade ( 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy ), while admittedly an improvement over last year’s barely coherent New Moon, only adds insult to injury. Nothing so grand as a real eclipse, it’s more just a massive blind spot.

Just How Long is Jonah Hex Exactly?

At least the reviews aren’t as bad as Marmaduke ? Well, not yet anyway. The early critical notices for Jonah Hex are in, and they’re… awful . Only 12 critics have weighed in on Rotten Tomatoes thus far and with the exception of Roger Ebert — seriously, Roger? — the consensus is that the DC comic adaptation is the latest worst movie of the summer . However if there is one thing unifying all the negative reviews — beyond the general hatred — it’s in commenting on just how quickly Jonah Hex hangs around. Brevity might be the soul of wit, but in this case it’s also the soul of a totally hacked-apart studio movie. But just how long is Jonah Hex ?

Cynthia Nixon Loved Taking ‘Sex And The City’ To An ‘Exotic Locale’

Actress says she feels her friendship with Kristin Davis really came across in ‘Sex and the City 2.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News For 12 years now the ladies of “Sex and the City” have mainly kept the sex in Manhattan, with a few stops along the way in Mexico, L.A. and Paris. So for “Sex And The City 2” the cast, especially Cynthia Nixon, taking their adventures was an appealing move. “My first reaction was, ‘This is a brilliant thing to do, to take us all very far away from New York and plunk us down in an exotic, beautiful locale,’ ” she told MTV News about the flick’s location, where Carrie runs into former flame Aidan Shaw . The girls shot the Abu Dhabi scenes in Morocco. “Partly to get us away from our husbands and children and jobs and let the four of us be together because I think one of the most exciting things is to see the four of us interact as a foursome.” One scene in particular will have fans remembering the special bond these four women have. In it, Charlotte and Miranda bond over their shared familial issues. It was a scene Nixon relished shooting. “Absolutely — Kristin and I are incredibly close, so it was very special,” she said. “It was also the very last scene we shot in Morocco, so it was really kind of the cherry on the sundae.” And, the scene was also a snapshot into the friendship that Nixon and Kristin Davis have in real life. “I feel like Kristin is very close to my kids and Kristin has always really been there for me during moments in my life when I really needed her and I needed advice,” she said. “And I think she would say the same of me. It was really great to show that. Also it was really great because Charlotte and Miranda, often in the past, have represented opposing points of view. So it was nice to see them really united on the same page.” What do you think of the girls’ trip to Abu Dhabi? Tell us in the comments! It’s “Sex and The City 2” Week at MTV News!
