Simon Cowell Bids Farewell To ‘American Idol’ On ‘Ellen’

Controversial judge tells DeGeneres that her ‘sitting in my lap, blowing in my ear … felt really good!’ By Kara Warner Simon Cowell on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ Photo: Warner Bros. It’s the beginning of a bittersweet week for love-to-hate-him “American Idol” judge, Simon Cowell. Though he doesn’t take his final “Idol” bow until the show’s season finale Wednesday night, Cowell admitted to fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show Tuesday (May 25) that he is both happy and sad to be leaving. “It’s kind of exciting,” Cowell told DeGeneres. “I’m not being ungrateful, I’ve had a fantastic time, the show changed my life. But I just kind of knew that it was time to do something different.” DeGeneres then asked Cowell, whom she called “a joy to work with” on “Idol,” if he’s been especially joyful throughout this season because he is leaving. “I haven’t thought about it like that! I don’t know, I’ve just felt a little bit happier, full stop. Maybe it is that, but when you’re in this position you start remembering all the great times you’ve had. We’ve had a blast over the years.” Cowell said he’s most proud and grateful that the show has stayed on the air for so long and that he’s become friends with the cast and crew. “We’ve all hopefully retained a sense of humor, nobody’s changed too much — with the exception of Ryan [Seacrest], who’s turned into a bit of a monster, but that was always going to happen. We’ve become friends and that’s quite rare with people you work with.” Amid several pre-taped gags that depicted various exaggerated behind-the-scene antics (one depicted a Cowell-double reaching over to touch an Ellen-double’s hands repeatedly during an assumed “Idol” taping), Cowell revealed one surprising Ellen-related warm fuzzy. “There was one time where you were sitting in my lap, blowing in my ear,” Cowell recalled. “I’ve got to tell you it felt really good. You’re very good at that. I’m going to stop myself there — I’m going to be in trouble.” To which DeGeneres quickly responded: “You can’t help it, you’re attracted to beautiful women.” Ellen then sent Cowell away with a parting gift — an alarm clock that plays Seacrest’s famous “And this, is American Idol!” phrase when its button is pressed. American Idol Shocker: Goodbye, Siobhan Magnus

We ranked her second after Tuesday night’s performance show , but American Idol viewers had a different idea about Siobhan Magnus: They actually voted out this eccentric singer yesterday, cutting season nine down to five finalists. While it’s true Magnus could rely too much on hitting glory notes, and certainly talked back too much to the judges, at least she brought something unique to the Idol table. With the exception of Crystal Bowersox , can that really be said about anyone remaining? Equally as surprising as Siobhan’s elimination? She was joined in the bottom three by Casey James and Michael Lynche. We’d love for someone to tell us how Aaron Kelly avoided that fate. At least Shakira performed last night. She and her hips always make us happy. She was joined on stage bu Rascal Flatts, and Sons of Sylvia also played for viewers. Check them all out below, and bid farewell to Magnus now…

Swedish House Mafia Aren’t Done With So-Called ‘Gangster’ Single

‘The States have woken up to house music,’ DJ/producer Axwell says. By Akshay Bhansali Swedish House Mafia Photo: Michael Caracozza It’s been nearly three years since Swedish DJ/producers Steve Angello, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso first performed as the house-music collective Swedish House Mafia. But in a short span, they’ve become rock stars in the genre. Although the DJs are known for their group effort, each boasts an impressive catalog of solo house hits, including Ingrosso’s collaboration with Dirty South and David Guetta, “How Soon Is Now”; “Show Me Love,” Angello and Laidback Luke’s remix of Robin S’s 1993 club hit; and the Axwell and Dirty South remix of the Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition.” The trio’s evolution from celebrated solo DJs to superstars was underscored when almost 100,000 fans gathered in late March to catch a Swedish House Mafia performance at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. “I don’t know what happened really, we’ve always been there in the background, doing our thing,” Axwell told MTV News in Miami. “I think the question is, ‘What the hell happened to the States?’ Because the States have kinda woken up to house music.” “We’re still doing our solo careers,” Angello said. “Everybody has their own things going, and then when we get together, it’s like New Year’s Eve. It’s like these DJs getting together and having a blast and partying with the crowd.” The group recently leaked a yet-untitled single. The track, which opens to a haunting intro and builds to a euphoric peak, has become an instant hit, with fans burning up the Swedish House Mafia message boards . Several visitors posting to SHM’s online forum have asked whether the song’s title will be some variation on “Gangster the Dog” or maybe “Gangsta.” But Angello considers the song a work-in-progress. “We haven’t named it,” he said. “We haven’t set a release date. We don’t know if we’re finished yet.” “It sounds pretty finished,” Axwell added. “It works really well. It’s our new single, but we’re trying to find some sort of vocal on it and that’s why we haven’t put a name on it yet, because if we put a name on it, then we’ll have to change it and it’ll get messy. But it’s phat!” In keeping with the group’s Swedish origins, we suggested 2005 Swedish “Idol” winner Agnes Carlsson, whose song “Release Me” has been a popular dance-music hit. “Yeah!” said Ingrosso. “I met her in the embassy office getting her visa. Is she [Stateside]?” he wondered aloud. Fans will have to wait to see if that collaboration comes to pass. What do you think of the Swedish House Mafia’s new track? Let us know in the comments below! ‘American Idol’ And The Beatles: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

We look back on the best and the worst of previous Lennon/McCartney covers. By Eric Ditzian Brooke White Photo: Fox In choosing their John Lennon and Paul McCartney-penned tunes for Tuesday night’s (April 6) live show, did the “American Idol” hopefuls of season nine look back at the history of Lennon/McCartney renditions on the reality show? From Clay Aiken’s inaugural Beatles performance up through this season’s top 24, the “Idol” past offers success stories and cautionary tales. Let’s take a gaze back at the good, the bad and the ugly of the Beatles songbook on “Idol.” The Good Brooke White, “Let It Be” (season seven) : White’s simple, breathy take on the final Beatles’ single was a perfect example of a true “Idol” breakout performance: the point at which we forget you’re a contestant on a reality show and start to envision you as a professional recording artist. Backed by a simple arrangement that slowly added complexity — first piano, then strings, then choral-like exhortations of her backup singers, finally the entire band — White didn’t attempt to refashion this classic. Rather, she introduced subtle variations in tone and phrasings, making the song her own until we saw the teary-eyed wild child within White for the very first time. Carly Smithson, “Come Together” (season seven) : Smithson took this Abbey Road opener and seriously funked it up with a fat bass line and some fierce rocker-chick vocal runs. It was a brilliant example that, if executed well, any song, no matter how familiar, can be made fresh and original. It was enough to make both the judges and the voters think Smithson was going to be a potential champ. Of course, that didn’t come close to happening. But at least for one night, it seemed possible. As Simon Cowell told her, “This reminds me, six years ago, exactly the same week — Kelly Clarkson.” Lilly Scott, “Fixing a Hole” (season nine) : With this Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band track, Scott proved that you don’t need to pick a current top 40 song to prove you’re a relevant, contemporary recording artist. Instead, she brought a current sensibility — that quirky, jazzy, singer/songwriter vibe — and delivered ear-pleasing, toe-tapping tuneage. The performance gave us hope that the snoozapalooza that has been watching season nine might be turning into an exercise more exciting than picking your bellybutton lint. So much for hope. Scott was sent packing just two weeks after this stunning performance. The Bad Clay Aiken, “Here, There and Everywhere” (season two) : Back in 2002, Randy called him “the bomb,” Paula called the performance haunting, and Simon called the whole thing “very pretty.” Time has not been kind to this live rendition. The harp? The lullaby-like pace? We should have known Aiken was headed to Broadway. The vocals may have been spot on, but he took this melodious-yet-haunting Revolver tune and squeezed out every single drop of vitality from it, revealing a gooey cheeseball center neither Lennon nor McCartney ever imagined existed there. Kris Allen, “Come Together” (season eight) : The eventual champ tried to go hard rock with this take on “Come Together,” which makes sense, considering the week’s mentor was guitar-shredding guru Slash. The instrumentation ended up overwhelming Allen’s vocals and leaving his brow soaked in a marathon run’s worth of sweat. All that work wasn’t worth it, nor did his rendition come anywhere close to the one Smithson pulled off a season earlier. The Ugly David Archuleta, “We Can Work It Out” (season seven) : Where to begin? Archie’s take on this 1965 hit veered off course almost immediately, as he started “umm”-ing and “nah”-ing instead of actually, er, singing words. What’s rule #1 of “Idol”? Don’t forget the lyrics! Bungling the words was bad enough … until you consider the arrangement, which, combined with the there’s-no-problem smile frozen on his mug, was so creepily upbeat it bordered on “American Psycho” territory. After this one, Archie owed the greatest songwriting team in music history a sincere apology. Kristy Lee Cook, “Eight Days a Week” (season seven) : Now it’s our turn to apologize for reintroducing you to this county hoedown from hell. Kristy Lee Cook’s speedy, twangy mauling of the 1964 chart-topper sounded, as Simon declared, like “Dolly Parton on helium.” That might be putting it kindly. The performance landed Cook in the bottom three, a spot from which she managed to climb out only to bungle another Lennon/McCartney tune the next week. Did we miss anything? T.I. Is ‘In A Zone,’ The-Dream Says

The Atlanta MC is ‘rapping like he’s in space,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez with reporting by Shaheem Reid The-Dream Photo: MTV News The recently freed T.I. said his next album (due August 24) will be more about “feelings” than his last project, Paper Trail, which he described as driven by “thoughts.” The Atlanta rapper has said fans can expect “classic T.I.” The-Dream , who sought out Tip for a collaboration on his forthcoming album, agreed with that early assessment, telling MTV News that T.I.’s skills are otherworldly right now. “Tip is in a zone, man,” said The-Dream, whose second single, “Sex Intelligent,” will feature T.I. “He’s in one of those things. But me just being a lyric guy, what makes songs, I think, hits is when it comes from the heart and you really are saying something you mean. And you can feel it through the passion. “Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it. It wasn’t about judging it. It wasn’t about, ‘Is this a single or is this that?’ It was just, ‘Wow, where have you been? Where’d you go?’ It was just elevated, and he’s elevated. Right now, he’s rapping like he’s in space. Not a place we don’t know — it’s in the same area — but his vibe is just wider now.” While Tip is hard at work on his yet-untitled comeback album, last month he released “I’m Back,” the first track he’s delivered to the public since beginning a federal prison stint last May on charges stemming from a 2007 arrest. Recently sprung a couple months shy of his yearlong sentence, the rapper is serving out the remaining months under home confinement. T.I. has been mostly quiet since his release in December, with the exception of a brief conference call with a group of DJs (though he declined to take questions) and a video interview he posted on his Web site, TrapMuzik.com . Are you excited to hear T.I.’s next album? Do The-Dream and Tip have a hit on their hands? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists The-Dream

Lost Episode Review: Answers and Revelations Galore!

This is a reaction typically reserved for Megan Fox pictures , but: OMFG! Last night’s episode of Lost (titled “The Substitute” and reviewed in depth here ) shed light on a number of topics that have plagued the minds of long-time fans since season one. What are the numbers? Why were the castaways brought to the island? How impressive is Sawyer’s tolerance? Discover the answers to these questions, and talk about them with fellow fans, below. THE NUMBERS correlate to various characters. As the Man in Black (under the guise of John Locke) told Sawyer: “Jacob had a thing for numbers.” He assigned one to each individual he brought to the island, handing out the digits with which we’re most familiar to those alive in 2007… with the exception of Kate. THEY WERE BROUGHT TO THE ISLAND as “candidates” to take over for Jacob, Fake Locke said. The late (great?) deity was looking for someone to take over his job as protector of the island. From what? Nothing, Fake Locke claimed. DID WE SEE JACOB AS A CHILD? At one point, Fake Locke went chasing after a boy that randomly appeared in the jungle and told this seemingly evil entity: You can’t kill him. Our best theory: this was a younger version of Jacob. ARE HAPPY ENDINGS AHEAD? In the sideways, 2004 universe, we saw a version of Locke that eventually came to grips with his wheelchair-bound status. He was also engaged to Helen and on good terms with his father. He learned lessons that the island castaway in 2007 struggled with for years. In some way, these timelines are connected and characters will get a second chance at happiness/redemption in their rebooted 2004 lives. Pressing questions from the episode include: Can we trust Fake Locke? Where is his “home?” How does the issue of free will play into everything? What is Ilana up to? What does she know? What’s her plan? Can we hand Terry O’Quinn his Emmy Award now? We could go on for days, but let’s turn it over to readers: What was your reaction to this episode? Were you satisfied with the answers provided? What else are you dying to learn?

Mischa Barton Just Wants to Get High, Man

The Beautiful Life? Hardly. Mischa Barton, whose career has fallen on some hard times of late, was spotted driving erratically around town for hours yesterday, talking on her cell phone. On one occasion, the actress, who was recently sued for unpaid rent by her NYC landlord, was seen making an obscene hand gesture to a fellow motorist. Mischa then pulled over to smoke weed before heading into Joan’s on Third for a late lunch with a mystery male friend (probably some D-list alt-rocker). A troubled star needs that release … Maybe that’s just a hand-rolled cigarette … [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] Following her DUI arrest in December 2007, Barton said she never wanted to do something so stupid again. With the exception of dressing like a hooker , she made good. For about 26 months at least. Note to Mischa: Marijuana and/or tobacco do not count as essential vitamins and minerals. Eat. Sleep. Get healthy and you might see 30.
