Nas’ Father’s Day Brunch Salutes All Dads

‘Mother’s Day is #1, but every once in a while, let’s remember the fathers too,’ Nas tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Nas Photo: Nas takes being a dad seriously. On his debut 1994 album, Illmatic, God’s Son lightly touched on his first forays into fatherhood, and as his catalog grew, so did his subject matter. In 2004, he saluted his own pop, Olu Dara, and even collaborated with his old man on his “Bridging the Gap” single. But this year on Father’s Day, the Queensbridge rap great plans to toss a nod to all dads with a special brunch in his native New York City. “I’m doing a Father’s Day brunch to just celebrate the fathers out there,” Nas told MTV News on Tuesday. “It’s important that we acknowledge that, because family is a very important thing, and Mother’s Day is #1, but every once in a while, let’s remember the fathers too.” For the brunch, Nasir hooked up with New York radio station Hot 97 to hold a contest. Fans wrote in and explained what makes their dad great, and the writers of the best entries get to spend the day with the rap star. It all falls in line with Nas’ latest single, “Daughters.” Rather than romanticize the role that dads play in their children’s lives, Esco tells a story of real-life mistakes that both he and his teenage daughter Destiny Jones have made throughout the years. “When I cut the record, it was like my daughter was on Twitter and tweeting crazy stuff, and I’m like, ‘Yo, what are you doin’?’ ” Nas recalled. The rapper soon realized that his girl had a public persona online much like a rapper would through his music and videos. By tweeting pictures of condoms and sending other suggestive messages, Destiny came off as a wild child when various blog sites picked up on her activities. “She was creating this image on Twitter, this raunchy kinda style that was more for the Internet world, but not realizing people pick up these sorta things and put it on their websites,” he explained. “I think my record is me being angry at her, angry at myself and just really shouting out to fathers out there.” While “Daughters” is new, the type of self-reflection the Illmatic MC displays on the record is not dissimilar from other records in his catalog. On his 2002 LP God’s Son, Nas opened up about his mother’s death from cancer on the song “Dance.” It’s his introspection that truly makes Nas great. “I understand people might not get it, but this is how I express myself,” he said. For Discussion: Documentary “Dear Daddy” Demands Fathers Step Up For Black Daughters [Video]

We need our black fathers to be there for us!!! NPR recently posted a discussion with director Janks Morton and one of the stars of his documentary “Dear Daddy,” which explores the issue of young black girls growing up without fathers. We thought we’d share an early trailer for the project along with some excerpts below: NPR: Janks, you talked about a lot of relationships, girls who never knew their fathers. There are young women whose fathers were in and out of their lives. Did you notice a difference in the stories that the girls told of what those different scenarios and what they meant? MORTON: What I saw, it doesn’t matter. The deserter, deceased, the disenfranchised, the whatever the circumstance, it doesn’t matter. The trauma that these girls – these 1.8 million, 18 to 24-year-old black girls, 1.8 million – are carrying on their heart, it’s not been given a voice. And what I found is that this arc, it goes through a woman’s life. It just manifests itself in all these different ways that I think, that if we can get this generation, you know, an opportunity to purge themselves of this trauma, I think there are some greatness that can begin to happen in the relationship dynamic in blacks. NPR also spoke with a woman named Jonetta Rose Barras, who wrote the book “Whatever Happened To Daddy’s Little Girl? The Impact Of Fatherlessness On Black Women”. She had some interesting things to add to the conversation about how fatherlessness causes deeper issues further down the line: NPR: But could part of the reason be that – and I just have to be, trying to be sensitive here – is part of the issue here that black women are the ones who perpetuate this by continuing to and choosing to – in some cases choosing to -have children without fathers who are reliable, without men who they know they can rely upon? And I have to ask if that’s part of the issue? BARRAS: Well, I have to look at my own self. I’ve been married twice. I had a child out of wedlock before I was married the first time. And I think that part of the problem is that you develop these kind of, I call them symptoms – the fatherless woman syndrome – you develop these handicaps based on the absence of your father. So you don’t believe that you’re lovable or worthy of love. You suffered the triple fear factor – fear of rejection, fear of commitment, fear of abandonment. You actually get involved with sexual activity because you’re looking for someone to love you. You have rage, anger and depression issues, and then you overcompensate, either using drugs, using work. And so these things come out in your life in ways that, kind of, alienates you in relationships. This is a very important issue and we want you to discuss it! Can we solve the “fatherlessness epidemic”? How can women who have already experienced the impact of being without their fathers move on and heal from their experience? How can men who don’t know their own fathers be better fathers to their daughters? How can women make better choices about who they let into their bodies to ensure the fathers of their children will be there for them? What’s been your experience? Do you have a relationship with your father? Have you tried to repair a fractured relationship?

Sasha Grey Visits a First-Grade Classroom, Fathers Upset They Weren’t Invited

This week porn star turned crossover sensation Sasha Grey decided to give back to her community by volunteering for the Read Across America program, which brings celebrities (as well as regular folks) into classrooms to encourage kids to read. Sasha appeared at an elementary school in Compton, California, where she visited a first-grade classroom modestly dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt and read a picture book to the kids. Of course, none of the students in the class knew who Sasha was, nor did the teacher screen clips of her work, but angry parents still contacted the school’s principal to express outrage that their children were allowed within 50 feet of the AVN winner. As a result, the school is now denying she was ever there, despite photos of the visit obtained by TMZ.com (left). We think they’re just mad that she didn’t participate in “Take the Fathers of a Classroom Full of Kids to Work” day. You’ll be more than kind of hard with kind-hearted porn star Sasha Grey here at MrSkin.com…and this time, it’s the kids who aren’t invited.
