Charlie Kaufman, Dan Harmon Need You to Fund Their New Collaboration

The ever-expanding Crowdsource Era has a new milestone: Charlie Kaufman needs $200,000 to help make a 40-minute stop-motion animated film called Anomalisa , and he’s inviting exiled Community creator Dan Harmon — and you — along to help. The project, which has already raised $80,000 on Kickstarter , brings Kaufman, Harmon, and the animators at Starburns Industries ( Moral Orel , the stop-motion Community Christmas episode) together to tell the story of a motivational speaker who is “crippled by the mundanity of life” until “suddenly one day, a girl’s voice pierces through the veil of nothingness. She fills him with such a rush of ‘aliveness,’ he’s willing to abandon everything and everyone, including his own family, and escape with her to a better life.” Duke Johnson will direct, and apparently you will pay for it — though you can’t really argue with the incentives: A 20-page screenplay about you, written by Dan Harmon? Hand-crafted puppets and/or sets? Executive producer credit? Skype chats with the filmmakers? Pretty amazing, and not cheap: The really good stuff will run you $1,000 and up, with some of the top prizes already spoken for. Maybe there is an aftermarket eBay kind of thing to auction off Kickstarter rewards? Someone should get on that. Anyway, good luck to all! [ Kickstarter via Gawker ]

‘Avengers’ Director Outlines The Art Of The Superhero Fight

Writer/director Joss Whedon talks to MTV News about the challenges of putting Captain America and Thor in the same brawl. By Kara Warner Joss Whedon Photo: Getty Images Despite the seemingly endless Internet speculation about the plot of “Marvel’s The Avengers” , if there’s one thing that we can absolutely count on seeing in the film when it opens is superhero-on-superhero fights. We’ve seen brief teases of these expectedly awesome and epic battles in the trailers , several of which occur in the blink of an eye and with heavy assists from CGI, and no matter how beautiful they appear onscreen, we can’t help but wonder how the filmmakers developed those complicated scenes without occasionally confusing which superhero has which superpower. When MTV News caught up with the film’s master choreographer himself, writer/director Joss Whedon, we asked him how he managed to keep all the super suits, super soldiers, demigods and archers separate when choreographing between such diverse characters. “The big challenge was a) not to let it be generic, for it to be something we haven’t seen before, but mostly to remember everybody’s skill set,” Whedon said at the film’s red-carpet premiere on Wednesday. “The fight choreographer might come up with something where Hawkeye, Captain America and Thor are all doing the same thing and it’s like, ‘Well no, they all have very different levels of power,’ and to sort of honor that reality for each one of them.” We followed up that question with another heavy-hitter: now that Whedon has tamed the beast that is this massive undertaking — which includes a pressure cooker of elements including a big budget, huge cast and satisfying fanboy expectations — how much vacation time will he need until he can think about another “Avengers” movie? “17 years in a tiny cave,” Whedon said. “In Tibet.” Perhaps we might be waiting awhile for that “Avengers” sequel. ‘Silent House’: The Reviews Are In!

‘[Elizabeth] Olsen rivets our attention, and the camera’s, so fiercely it verges on unbearable,’ Kat Murphy of MSN.com writes. By Kara Warner Elizabeth Olsen in “Silent House” Photo: Open Road Films Although based on a 2010 Uruguayan Spanish-language horror film, “Silent House” is supposedly inspired by actual events, which only adds to its creep factor. It’s not a movie for the faint of heart. Elizabeth Olsen stars as a young women who finds herself trapped in a remote cottage where she is haunted and hunted by unknown horrors. While critics seem divided over whether it is mostly good or bad — the film is currently hovering around the 50 percent Fresh mark over at Rotten Tomatoes — almost all of them had high praise for the technical construction of the film, which was uniquely done by filming the entire movie in one long, continuous shot . Read on through the “Silent House” reviews … if you dare. The Plot ” ‘Silent House’ introduces us to our soon to be harried heroine, a 20-something who’s returned with her father to their old family vacation home (in the woods and by a lake, natch) to pack it up, board it up, and say farewell to it before it goes on the market. But it’s going to take a lot of work — squatters have defaced it; rust has wrecked the plumbing; and mildew’s worked its way into the electrical system. The house is much like Sarah … she’s barely hiding lots of peeling paint, weak foundations, and broken windows to the soul. But why? We will find out, but first it is time to get scared! Dad and Sarah are soon joined by Uncle Peter who’s come to help with the tidying, a neighbor Sarah really doesn’t remember from childhood summers pops by, and a creepy little girl lurks just out of sight in convenient shadows. The players are in place, and the suspense begins. It’s just little things at first; a noise here, a falling piece of plastic sheeting there. And then Sarah’s dad is attacked, his eye bloodily gouged from his skull. Sarah tries to run — and she does escape the dwelling of doom, but she’s lured back inside by clever, insidious means. To reveal much more would be spoilery, but I will say that Silent House is the kind of movie you must suspend all disbelief for (OK, maybe some of the embarrassingly foreshadowing dialogue is diss-worthy) in order to enjoy. Just watch the girl, follow her, and get caught up in her terror. It works on a visceral level, similar to the French film of a few years back, ‘Ils.’ ” — Staci Layne, Horror.com The Technical Achievement “Like Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Rope’ or the original movie, the conceit of the film is that it’s entirely shot in one take with only a couple obvious times where they could have easily cheated. If you weren’t informed in advance that the movie was done in one take, you may not even realize it as the camera person/DP follows the characters up and downstairs, in and out of the house in an incredibly fluid way, barely missing a beat as we go from mundane packing activities to intense horrors. [Directors] Kentis and Lau have done a terrific job creating an atmosphere of tension, keeping the viewer on the edge never knowing what to expect or in fact, what exactly is going on. This helps to make some of the more obvious jump scares work better than they might normally, something that can also be attributed to Nathan Larson’s subtle but effective score. Even so, the filmmakers sadly go for many often-used clich

Harvey Weinstein To Battle Doc Bully’s R-Rating For the Children

Says storied MPAA-fighter Harvey : “I have been compelled by the filmmakers and the children to fight for an exception so we can change this R rating brought on by some bad language. As a father of four, I worry every day about bullying; it’s a serious and ever-present concern for me and my family. I want every child, parent, and educator in America to see Bully , so it is imperative for us to gain a PG-13 rating. It’s better that children see bad language than bad behavior, so my wish is that the MPAA considers the importance of this matter as we make this appeal.” [Press release via IndieWire ]

Breaking Nudes from Sundance: Midnight Movie Madness

The Sundance Film Festival’ s midnight movies have quite a reputation, what with (sk)incidents of festival-goers passing out, freaking out, throwing up, and being carried away by EMTs during screenings every single year . It’s probably just clueless filmgoers woozy from the high altitude, as Devin Faraci points out in a recent Badass Digest article , but as the filmmakers behind The Killer Inside Me (2010) and The Woman (2011) (both of which had contentious Sundance screenings) will tell you, there’s no such thing as bad publicity when your goal is to shock. So which nude, crude flicks made Sundance spew this year? Get the skinny from our Skin Skout after the jump!
