David Fincher’s Dragon Tattoogate Embargo Solution: No Early Screenings for Critics

Film bloggers and pundits and awards season watchers have pecked this David Denby-Scott Rudin exchange to death with no clear consensus or solution, but one player in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo kerfuffle has a solution. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t show movies to anybody before they were released,” director David Fincher told the Miami Herald. “…If I had my way, the New York Film Critics Circle would not have seen this movie and then we would not be in this situation.” More wishful thinking from Fincher after the jump!

Why Do Our Most Technology-Obsessed Filmmakers Make Movies That are Anti-Technology?

Another 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Remake Planned

Since one big-budget remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea clearly isn’t enough, here comes another. Because, of course. After it was reported over the weekend that David Fincher was circling an adaptation of the Jules Verne classic for Disney, now comes word that Fox and Scott Free Productions have been planning their own take with help from a script by Clash of the Titans co-writer Travis Beacham (yes, that film did have a script). The studio wants the incredibly busy Timur Bekmambetov to direct, meaning this 20,000 Leagues will get made right around the time the Fincher-led version does: Never. [ THR ]

Rooney Mara: David Fincher Made Me Do 99 Takes of a Single Social Network Scene

Rooney Mara goes through the wringer as the lead of the revamped A Nightmare on Elm Street , but it’s nothing compared to what she had to endure in her upcoming film, the David Fincher-directed Facebook drama The Social Network . The meticulous Fincher is notorious for demanding that his actors peform dozens of takes, as Jake Gyllenhaal found out while shooting Zodiac : “Sometimes we’d do a lot of takes, and he’d turn, and he would say, because he had a computer there, ‘Delete the last 10 takes,'” Gyllenhaal told the NYT in 2007. “And as an actor that’s very hard to hear.” When Movieline spoke to Mara this week, we had to know: Is Fincher still up to his old tricks?

Report: Carey Mulligan Locked for Dragon Tattoo

After nearly choking with excitement at the prospect of starring in David Fincher’s English-language remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo , it looks like Carey Mulligan will get her wish: A report in the Times says she’s received Fincher’s blessing for the thriller’s punky female lead. Moreover, Fincher is said to want Brad Pitt for the film as well — which could theoretically scuttle the star’s other, lower-paying Sony effort Moneyball depending on scheduling. If this doesn’t affirm the surging Moneyball curse , then nothing will. [ The Times via TOH ]
