It’s Hard Out Here For An Imperialist

At my first screening of Silence, George Lucas introduced Martin Scorsese’s new Japan-set spiritual drama at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre by praising it as a film that belongs in the 20th century. Whatever Lucas meant by that, Silence feels far older, even archaic, bemoaning as it does the arduousness of European colonialism. “It’s Hard Out… Read more »

Kenny Baker Dies; Actor Behind R2-D2 was 81

Kenny Baker, a British actor you may not recognize but whose work you know VERY well, died on Saturday after battling a lengthy illness. He was 81 years old. Standing at just 3 feet and 8 inches tall, Baker starred in six Star Wars films as the iconic character of R2-D2. The actor’s niece, Abigail Shield, confirmed this sad news to The Guardian, paying tribute to her relative as follows: “It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. “We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.” Baker rose to fame in 1977 when he first appeared on screen as this beloved robot. He then returned for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the three Star Wars prequels from 1999 to 2005. Baker also has roles in a number of other popular films in the 1980s, including The Elephant Man, Time Bandits and Flash Gordon. “When he was a child, he was told that he probably wouldn’t survive through puberty. Being a little person in those times, they didn’t have a very good life expectancy,” Shield told The Guardian on Saturday. “He did extremely well in his life. He was very ill for the last few years, so we had been expecting it. “He had been looked after by one of his nephews, who found him on Saturday morning.” She concluded: “He had problems with his lungs and was often in a wheelchair. He was very poorly for a long time. He was asked to go out to L.A. for the new Star Wars premiere, but he was told he was too ill to travel. “Luckily, he did manage to meet George Lucas again when he came to Manchester.” This news hits just as the first Rogue One trailer went viral toward the end of last week. Take a look at it below: Rogue One Trailer: “Star Wars Story” Goes Back in Time to Reign of Vader We can’t thank Baker enough for his contributions to the most beloved film franchise in history. We hope he is resting in peace. The same, of course, goes for all of the celebrities who have passed away this year. May The Oppression Be With You: George Lucas Says He Sold Star Wars To “White Slavers”

George Lucas Says ‘Star Wars’ Was Sold To “White Slavers” Even after clocking over $1 billion at the box office worldwide in just a few days, OG Star Wars creator George Lucas ain’t feelin’ the new version of his baby. In fact, Lucas feels like the new producers just bit his whole style from the original flick and didn’t do enough to make “The Force Awakens” it’s own entity. Via NYDailyNews “They wanted to do a retro movie,” Lucas said in an interview with Charlie Rose. “I don’t like that.” “Every movie, I work very hard to make them different,” he continued. “I make them completely different, with different planets and different spaceships, to make it new.” He also called the first six movies his “kids,” saying he “sold them to white slavers that take these things and…,” before halting the remark and laughing it off, presumably thinking better of it. Now before you go and weep for Lucas and his tragically bastardized creativity, be aware that he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for, wait for it…$4 BILLION! Boo-the-f***-hoo, George Lucas. Boo f***ing hoo. Far as the “slavers” comment, there was prolly a MUCH better choice of words considering he has a black wife and the ugly controversy surrounding black “storm trooper” John Boyega. Katniss On The Catwalk: New ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Posters Are All About Freaky Fashion

The marketing people at Lionsgate are no dummies. They clearly recognize that celebrity culture has been reduced to “What are you wearing” questions on the red carpet, and are ramping up their marketing efforts for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with the movie poster equivalent: seven character portrait images that depict Katniss  & Compay in fancy freaky fashions before the next round of adolescent-on-adolescent bloodshed begins. Based on the images below,  the film’s costume designer Trish Summerville should consider establishing a men’s line (as long as she doesn’t stray too far into  Stanley Tucci  /Caesar territory), but whoa, she’d get ripped a new one by Joan Rivers for her women’s wear.  I’m guessing that Jennifer Lawrence /Katniss’ winged outfit is Mockingjay -inspired, and it certainly will be mocked. Thank God JLaw didn’t wear that number to the Oscars. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . Follow Movieline on  Twitter .
