Broadway Hit Hamilton Accused OF “Racist” Casting Due To Open-Call Search For Non-White Performers

“Hamilton” Casting Called Discriminatory To Whites By now, surely you’ve heard about the Broadway breakout hit Hamilton , which tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton through hip-hop influenced music numbers and features a predominantly Black and Latino cast…although you likely haven’t seen it yourself since tickets are sold out until 2017. The hit play recently came under fire while looking for extra cast members to fill its highly coveted roles. An NY civil rights activist says that the producers’ search specifically looking for people of color violates fair casting rules. Via Playbill : Hamilton, which has been praised for its bold casting policy of using ethnically diverse actors to play the mainly white Founding Fathers—a move that has captivated audiences and emboldened minority actors—may have stepped over the line in a recent casting notice, according to a civil rights attorney. According to a CBS News report, the attorney, Randolph McLaughlin of the Newman Ferrara Law Firm slammed a recent casting notice specifying that the show was seeking “non-white” performers. He said the notice may violate the New York City Human Rights Law that forbids discrimination in hiring based on race. No specific legal complaint has been filed against the show with the New York Commission on Human rights so far. But McLaughlin told CBS, “What if they put an ad out that said, ‘Whites only need apply? Why, African-Americans, Latinos, Asians would be outraged.” The production is fairly confident that they had followed all the applicable rules while looking to keep the diverse cast that has helped make the show a standout on the Broadway scene, so they ended up issuing a “sorry, not sorry” statement addressing the casting call in question: “The producers of Hamilton regret the confusion that’s arisen from the recent posting of an open call casting notice for the show. It is essential to the storytelling of Hamilton that the principal roles –which were written for non-white characters (excepting King George) – be performed by non-white actors. This adheres to the accepted practice that certain characteristics in certain roles constitute a “bona fide occupational qualification” that is legal. This also follows in the tradition of many shows that call for race, ethnicity or age specific casting, whether it’s The Color Purple or Porgy & Bess, or Matilda. The casting will be amended to also include language we neglected to add, that is, we welcome people of all ethnicities to audition for Hamilton.” “Hamilton depicts the birth of our nation in a singular way,” said producer Jeffrey Seller, in a further statement. “We will continue to cast the show with the same multicultural diversity that we have employed thus far.” So…the popular play that makes SURE that Black and Brown people get prominent parts is the one that gets called out for discrimination??? SMH. At least they don’t plan on backing down. So if you’re in the NYC area and looking for that big break…by all means take your (Black or Brown) self down to the theater and try out! Playbill.com

Chris Brown Video Proclaims: I LOVE Rihanna AND Karrueche!

Chris Brown has just released an overproduced and unintentionally hilarious video in which he drunkenly rambles that he’s in love with Rihanna AND Karrueche Tran . Cue the violins. Chris Brown Drunk Rant “Is there such thing as loving two people? I don’t know if that’s possible but for me I just feel like that,” he muses. “I’m not trying to be a player … I just care too much sometimes.” Yes, he’s serious. Full of yourself much? With due credit to the gritty, melodramatically somber and artistic nature of this propaganda film, stringing along your GF while banging your ex makes you the epitome of a player. Karrueche may be naive for not realizing it, but come on now Chris. Anyway, the video is clearly designed to put a positive spin on his decision to dump Karrueche this week – only after Rihanna and Chris Brown hooked up a lot. He also makes abundantly clear that he’s wasted for some reason. Clips of him drinking champagne straight from the bottle, clubbing up a storm and slouched over while smoking are spliced together, and he says, “I’m a little drunk, I’mma be honest.” Good to know brah. Neither Rihanna nor and Karrueche Tran are mentioned by name, but both are briefly shown in the video. Watch it below, then tell us what you think of Chris Brown …   So emotional, honest and sincere!

112 To Reunite Onstage ‘For The Fans’

Slim from 112 talks to MTV News about the group’s upcoming reunion album, but tells fans not to expect a comeback album. By Rob Markman 112 Photo: At their height, 112 represented the very best of R&B music. With their 1996 self-titled debut, Slim, Q, Mike and Daron thrilled lovelorn listeners with a healthy mix of ballads and dance numbers. Over the course of nine years and five albums, fans swooned over 112 with hits like “Only You,” “It’s Over Now” and “Peaches & Cream.” Like all good things, 112 eventually came to an end, but on Saturday, the quartet will reunite onstage for their For the Fans Tour. “While I was doing my thing, I’ve been going all over the place, all over the world, and everybody keeps on asking about 112,” Slim told MTV News on Wednesday (June 20) over the phone. “The fans wanted to see not two people, not three people, but everybody. When everything added up, everything was all good.” It is all good, but Slim, who has gone on to enjoy solo success outside the group, didn’t want to label this new tour an official reunion. “I wouldn’t even say it’s a reunion thing. I think of it as more of a For the Fans Tour,” he explained. “When I think of reunion, reunion means new material, going back into the studio and recording and stuff like that. … I don’t want to disappoint any fans, but that’s not what we talked about. Right now, we’re addressing getting on the stage together and actually singing.” These days, Slim is concentrating on his sophomore project, Cruise Control, and this tour; he didn’t want to dwell on past drama. Instead, he said the group’s breakup was due to growing pains. “When you start growing up, you start growing apart, and everybody starts having their own individual outlooks on music,” he said. “I think everybody had their own individual approach of who they wanted to be in music.” Regardless, the silky-voice singer promises a quality performance. “It’s going to be really fun for all the fans who want to come out and see Q, Mike, Slim and Daron on the same stage at one time, and we’re definitely going to give one heck of a show,” he assured. “It is fun to sing the songs with the guys. It is fun to actually get in practice and actually do the steps and see everything that we worked hard for when we first started off and set off before everything.” 112’s For the Fans Tour dates:

Phillip Phillips ‘Feeling Good’ After Kidney Surgery

‘American Idol’ season 11 champ tells MTV News upcoming tour is ‘going to be a big learning experience.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips Photo: It seems like just yesterday that Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner of “American Idol,” and although season 11 has ended, your favorite Idols are heading out on tour very soon. MTV News recently caught up with the still-humble champ to talk about prepping the big summer tour, as well as his recovery from the recent surgery he underwent to remove a number of large kidney stones . “I’m feeling good,” he assured MTV News. Phillips recently told The Associated Press that he’s “getting better each day, so that’s a good thing. I’m just walking around, getting my strength back together. It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I’m getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit.” Speaking about the buzz surrounding the “Idol” tour, the 21-year-old seemed to still be wrapping his head around the extent of the production. “I’m real excited. It’s all of our first time being on a real tour, and it’s going to be a big learning experience. We’re all really excited about it,” Phillips said. “It’s a lot of jamming-out music, and that’s what I do. Hopefully people are feeling the music when I’m feeling it, so it’s going to be fun.” And what about the work on his highly anticipated debut album? “I’m just starting [to work on it], so I’m excited,” Phillips said. “I’ve been writing. I have other songs written, and I’m excited to get it out there.” In addition to his recovery, the “Idol” tour and work on his solo album, Phillips will also be performing at the Fourth of July celebration at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., alongside country singer Josh Turner, “Smash” star Megan Hilty, actor Matthew Broderick and famed composer John Williams. Bobby Jindal Signs ‘Guns-In-Church’ Bill Into Law

If you're like most Americans, there's probably been a time in your life when you've been sitting in church, listening to a particularly ennui-inducing homily or enduring another warbly version of “Holy Holy Holy” and thought, “Man! I could really reach for some steel right now, squeeze off a few rounds, and let these fools know what the score is!” Well, in Louisiana, Governor Bobby Jindal has recently signed into law a measure that would allow you to at least feel comforted by the presence of your gun in the house of the Lord. From the New Orleans Times-Picayune: Gov. Bobby Jindal has signed into law one of the more controversial bills from the recent legislative session, one allowing guns to be carried into houses of worship. [State Representative Henry] Burns' [R-Haughton] bill would authorize persons who qualified to carry concealed weapons having passed the training and background checks to bring them to churches, mosques, synagogues or other houses of worship as part of a security force. I am only too sure that a law allowing mosque-goers to carry guns to service will not rile up Louisiana's paranoiacs at all! Some restrictions apply. The “head of the religious institution” would have to “announce verbally or in weekly newsletters or bulletins that there will be individuals armed on the property as members of he security force,” and those lucky individuals would have to receive “eight hours of tactical training each year.” So, why is all of this necessary? Basically, Representative Burns is concerned about a possible “First Sunday scenario”: Burns contended that religious institutions in crime-ridden or “declining neighborhoods” need the added protection to ward off thieves and muggers. added by: singrrr
