‘It’s going to be a big learning experience,’ says ‘Idol’ champ Phillip Phillips of the 45-city tour. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips at the ‘Idols Live’ Rehearsals Photo: It’s hard enough for bands with one singer to get their musical heads together for a major summer tour. Just imagine coordinating a band with 10 lead singers and you can begin to see how much work goes into getting ready for this summer’s American Idols Live! Tour featuring the top singers from season 11. The top 10 have begun getting things together for the tour, which kicks off on July 6 in Detroit. They gathered in a studio in Los Angeles on Wednesday to continue getting their act together. During an a cappella run through One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” a smiling Phillip Phillips stood in the back of the pack as fellow finalist Colton Dixon mussed up his pal’s hair. “I’m really excited, you know it’s all of our first time being on a real tour … it’s going to be a big learning experience,” said Phillips, just a few weeks removed from surgery to repair a chronic kidney problem . “I’m feeling good,” he assured MTV News of the surgery, which followed eight surgeries during the run of the show to deal with recurring stones. For a period it was unclear if Phillips would be healed in time for the tour, but he’s clearly healed quickly enough make the trek. Phillips recently told the Associated Press that he’s “getting better each day, so that’s a good thing. I’m just walking around, getting my strength back together. It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I’m getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit.” Runner-up Jessica Sanchez was reveling in getting the old crew together again. “It’s so much fun … it’s just like the old days when we were first auditioning and everyone was just a big family and just jamming out.” Her pal, country gal Skylar Laine, added, “Every day we come in here and rehearse and just sing our songs and do our group songs and it’s a blast.” Dixon promised that the live show is “completely different” from what viewers saw on TV. The experience will also be new for the singers, since instead of a few thousand in a studio audience, they will be looking at more than 10,000 screaming fans in arenas. “We’re gonna be like, ‘what do we do with that?’,” he said. Rocker chick Elise Testone promised that you will see the contestants singing backup for one another, performing duets and group songs and putting more of their personalities into the songs. “It’s a perfect mix between favorite moments form the show …. ‘American Idol’ season 11 champ tells MTV News upcoming tour is ‘going to be a big learning experience.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips Photo: It seems like just yesterday that Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner of “American Idol,” and although season 11 has ended, your favorite Idols are heading out on tour very soon. MTV News recently caught up with the still-humble champ to talk about prepping the big summer tour, as well as his recovery from the recent surgery he underwent to remove a number of large kidney stones . “I’m feeling good,” he assured MTV News. Phillips recently told The Associated Press that he’s “getting better each day, so that’s a good thing. I’m just walking around, getting my strength back together. It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I’m getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit.” Speaking about the buzz surrounding the “Idol” tour, the 21-year-old seemed to still be wrapping his head around the extent of the production. “I’m real excited. It’s all of our first time being on a real tour, and it’s going to be a big learning experience. We’re all really excited about it,” Phillips said. “It’s a lot of jamming-out music, and that’s what I do. Hopefully people are feeling the music when I’m feeling it, so it’s going to be fun.” And what about the work on his highly anticipated debut album? “I’m just starting [to work on it], so I’m excited,” Phillips said. “I’ve been writing. I have other songs written, and I’m excited to get it out there.” In addition to his recovery, the “Idol” tour and work on his solo album, Phillips will also be performing at the Fourth of July celebration at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., alongside country singer Josh Turner, “Smash” star Megan Hilty, actor Matthew Broderick and famed composer John Williams. He may have spent months on the American Idol stage, earning millions of votes in order to be crowned the 11th champion in series history, but Phillip Phillips is not anxious for a break. Speaking to reporters for the first time since undergoing kidney surgery , the singer said he’s sick of recovery and excited to perform in front of fans this summer on tour. “I’ve kind of been going crazy just looking at the four walls surrounding me,” Phillips said, adding that he loves to sleep, but he’s ready to be active once again. Phillips has mostly just been “resting and recovering” since the June 7 procedure, but he can pick up a guitar now, which bodes well for his presence at the July 6 tour opener in Detroit. “I’m pretty confident,” he says of joining the nine other Idol finalists as they visit various cities over the next couple months. “I’m just going to have fun with it … It’s going to go well, I believe.”

It’s been a back and forth few weeks for Phillip Phillips since being named American Ido l champion, but we can now confirm the singer has, indeed, undergone a six-and-a-hour surgery to remove especially large kidney stones that were too large to pass. He’s recovering and is on track to take part in every tour stop this summer. “Surgery went well,” his rep told multiple media outlets this morning “He’s resting and will be ready for the idol tour kickoff in July!” Phillips fought through eight procedures throughout his Idol run, which ended in May with a victory over Jessica Sanchez . “[America’s] just seen a glimpse of what Phillip can do,” his father told People . “We can’t wait to get him well and 100 percent and really see how he can perform.”

Very good news for American Idol fans across the country: Phillip Phillips WILL be coming to a venue near you. The Season 11 champion has been battling kidney problems for months and was scheduled to undergo surgery late last month that may have caused him to miss the opening couple dates on the show’s upcoming summer tour. But sources now tell E! News that Phillips is “doing well” and responding to an alternative treatment. He currently has no plans to follow through with any kind of procedure. “He will still be attending all the tour dates and is really looking forward to the launch on July 6,” says a rep for the tour. Phillips will likely be greeted with hearty rounds of applause everywhere he goes. The singer is off to an incredibly strong start to his post-show career, making American Idol history last month due to how many times folks downloaded his winning single, “Home.”

The Season 11 champion finished at number-two on the Digital Songs chart this week, as the single “Home” was downloaded 278,000 times, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its the biggest sales week for any winner’s coronation single since SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003. Phillip Phillips – “Home” Moreover, it’s the second-best digital sales week EVER for any American Idol contestant at any time, trailing only Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which debuted with 280,000 downloads. Phillips’ achievement is also the fourth most impressive debut of 2012, placing behind Justin Bieber ‘s “Boyfriend” (521,000), Maroon 5’s “Payphone” featuring Wiz Khalifa (493,000) and Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” (411,000). The singer will soon be celebrating in a hospital bed, however. Once a high fever comes down, he is scheduled to undergo surgery in order to cure a kidney ailment. We wish him a speedy recovery!

And he’s head over heels for the unnamed brunette. “She is so excited for me,” the 21-year old told reporters in a conference call yesterday. “She supported me throughout all of this, and I love her to death.” Phillip added that his gal pal has helped him immensely through his kidney ailment – it came out this week that Phillips underwent EIGHT surgeries during season 11 and is due for one in the near future – and if female voters out there have a problem with his heart being taken, well… … too bad! “If a girl [voted] for me because I’m cute, and then gets mad that I have a girlfriend, then she doesn’t really like the music,” he said. “I’m not some cute guy who is trying to be successful off that.
