Mark Frauenfelder Rips TSA For Telling Daughter To Cover Up

Mama bears are known for being vicious protectors of their children. Father and founder of Boing Boing Mark Fauenfelder just found himself a new nickname: Papa Bear. Frauenfelder took to Twitter and his Boing Boing blog after receiving texts from his daughter about the TSA agent’s “glaring” at her and then barking “COVER YOURSELF.”  Frauenfelder’s 15-year old daughter was traveling with a group of friends on a college tour when a TSA agent decided to play morality police and shame the teen for her attire, seen in the picture above. The incident, which left the teen “humiliated and shamed,” prompted former Babes in Toyland bassist Maureen Herman to write an entry on  A is For  about the sexism and shaming the girl encountered at the hands of someone who went beyond the boundaries of his job.  There’s no doubt TSA agents see crazy things all day long, but maybe they should learn to restrict their comments to, oh, I don’t know, issues of safety and security and not leggings as pants. We get that they lost their invasive full-body scanners and maybe they’re a little bummed about that, but leering at teen girls and shaming them for traveling in comfort? That’s a little outside their pay grade and job description. Best leave the parenting to, you know, the parents. Otherwise, be prepared to suffer the backlash. What do you think, THGers? Was the TSA agent out of line?   Yes No View Poll »

Serena Williams Implies Steubenville Rape Victim to Blame For Ordeal, Sort of Backtracks

Tennis great Serena Williams is in hot water over incendiary comments she made in Rolling Stone about the victim in the Steubenville, Oh., rape saga. Williams came under fire this week after saying that “[the Steubenville rape victim ] shouldn’t have put herself in that position” at a high school party. Now Serena is issuing an apology, though she also appears to be deflecting responsibility and implying that she may not have ever made that remark. “I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article,” Williams says. “What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.” So … what she supposedly said was hurtful. What did she say? Follow the link for the Rolling Stone article . You be the judge.

The new trailer for  The World’s End revisits the first two films in the  Blood and Ice Cream trilogy, which is sadly coming to an end. But not without a murder-robot bang! Watch the new trailer below: The World’s End Trailer – Trilogy Filmmaking partners Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright return to the sci-fi/action comedy genre with  The World’s End . This time, five friends go back to their home town to re-attempt an epic pub crawl that they failed twenty years ago. When they get there, they learn that something sinister has happened (it wouldn’t be  Blood and Ice Cream if there wasn’t something sinister). Pegg stars, along with Nick Frost, Paddy Constantine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, and Rosamund Pike. Wright directs the film, which hits theaters August 23.

Obesity Now Defined as Disease By American Medical Association

The American Medical Association formally voted earlier this week to classify obesity as a disease, one that 35 percent of U.S. adults reportedly have. The classification is aimed in part to get doctors to tackle obesity as if they were treating a disease, rather than a mere lifestyle in need of modification. Dr. Patrice Harris of the AMA said in a statement: “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles a complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans.” “The AMA is committed to improving health and working to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, which are often linked to obesity.” Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) – a ratio of height over weight – of 30 or higher. People are considered normal weight with a BMI of 18.5-24.9. While obesity may not have formally been considered a disease before, it has certainly been linked to diseases by growing bodies of research. Studies have linked obesity to risk increases for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, liver disease, sleep apnea, breathing problems, and osteoarthritis. Moreover, experts believe it can lead to joint pain, infertility, sexual side effects and cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, pancreas and kidneys. The 2013 “Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer” found significant rises in obesity-related cancers over the past three decades. Heart disease in particular is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women, doctors say. On and on the studies go. Obesity’s new disease classification may also make more Americans realize what inactivity and non- healthy recipes could be doing to their health. A January 2013 survey showed that as many as 70 percent of Americans know heart disease and diabetes are health risks tied to obesity. However, only 7 percent of respondents knew cancer was a risk and 5 percent knew asthma and sleep apnea could be helped by shedding pounds. The new disease classification could also have an impact on legislation in D.C. and with insurance companies, regarding procedures and medications. What do you think: Should obesity be considered a disease?   Yes, and it should be treated like one! No! People need to take responsibility for their lifestyles! View Poll »

Dolce & Gabbana: Convicted of Tax Evasion!

Dolce & Gabbana have been convicted of tax evasion. As in the two guys who created the namesake luxury label. Maybe pinstripes will be in this year? Dominico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were found guilty Wednesday by a court in Milan, Italy, of failing to pay taxes on about $268 million in income. Makes Lauryn Hill and Wesley Snipes look like model citizens. The duo received a suspended jail sentence of 20 months and were ordered to pay $670,000 in penalties to Italy’s tax authorities, reports indicate. However, a jury acquitted them of misrepresenting earnings totaling $560 million, despite the fact a statute of limitations expired on the charge. The case stemmed from the fact that Dolce and Gabbana sold their brand to a Luxembourg-based company in 2004 to avoid having to pay taxes. Dolce, 54, and Gabbana, 50, have maintained innocence throughout a process that began when Italy’s Tax Commission initiated a probe of the sale. Two years ago, a court tossed charges of tax evasion and fraud against the pair. Because the Milan mainstays plan to appeal their sentence, given the complexities of Italian law, they are unlikely to spend anytime behind bars.
