Rhonda Lee Fired For Defending Hair on Facebook, Meteorologist’s Fans Lash Out

Louisiana meteorologist Rhonda Lee defended her short hair after being insulted on Facebook, only to be fired … and receive a groundswell of support online. A viewer took Lee, of Shreveport’s KTBS, to task October 1 for having short hair, rather than for any job-related issues. Lee, 37, responded in the comments. Instead of backing her up or deleting the offensive post, however, the network fired Lee , saying she had violated the company’s unofficial social media policy. Now, her fans are furious. Nearly 1,000 people have signed a petition asking that KTBS rehire Lee, saying she was victimized twice, once by the viewer “and again by KTBS.” “Rhonda Lee deserves to have her job back,” the petition reads. “Her eloquent response to the bigoted and sexist remarks of viewer Emmitt Vascocu were warranted.” “Employers such as KTBS-TV should stand by their employees and on-air talent whenever they are verbally attacked based on their looks, values or merit.” “I would never have dreamed in a million years that I would get all this support,” Lee told the Daily News. “It’s been a tough go at first to not be angry. But mostly I’m just sad. I genuinely loved where I worked. I loved my viewers. I made my home here.” For its part, KTBS says Lee “was not dismissed for her appearance or defending her appearance” but rather for the repeated violation of the company policy. “Unfortunately, television personalities have long been subject to harsh criticism and negative viewer comments about their appearance and performance,” the ABC affiliate said. “If harsh viewer comments are posted, there is a specific procedure to follow.” Rhonda Lee, however, says she never saw the policy in question, and that when she asked for it following her termination, higher-ups told her no. KTBS, on the other hand, says Lee received an email outlining the procedure, which states that it is “best not to respond at all” to viewer complaints. What did Lee write, and in response to what, exactly? “The black lady that does the news is a very nice lady. the onlt [sic] thing is she needs to wear a wig or grow some more hair,” wrote Emmitt Vascocu on October 1. “im not sure if she is a cancer patient. but its not something that i think looks good on tv.” Days later, when KTBS still hadn’t respond to the Facebook post on its page, Lee did. “Hello Emmitt I am the “black lady” to which you are referring. My name is Rhonda Lee. Nice to meet you,” she wrote on October 6, in the comments. “I am sorry you don’t like my ethnic hair. And no I don’t have cancer.” “I am very proud of my African-American ancestry which includes my hair. For your edification: traditionally our hair doesn’t grow downward. It grows upward.” “Many Black women use strong straightening agents in order to achieve a more European grade of hair and that is their choice. However in my case I don’t find it necessary.” “I’m very proud of who I am and the standard of beauty I display. As women we come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and levels of beauty.” “Showing little girls that being comfortable in the skin and HAIR God gave me is my contribution to society,” the TV personality concluded. “Little girls (and boys for that matter) growing up in this world need to see that what you look like isn’t a reason to not achieve their goals.”

Adam Lanza: Connecticut Shooting Suspect Identified, Dead at Scene

The crazed gunman dressed in black who went on a rampage at a Connecticut elementary school this morning has been identified as Adam Lanza, according to reports. The Connecticut school shooting left 27 dead, including Lanza and 18 children. Adam Lanza, 20, reportedly shot and killed his mother, a teacher, then targeted her kindergarten class at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Police in Hoboken, N.J. are questioning his brother Ryan Lanza , 24, who was originally reported as the shooter; the N.Y. Post says he is not a suspect. The Post says Adam Lanza and his mother “had a dispute” of some kind. Lanza used two handguns and a .223-caliber assault rifle in the rampage. Officials also said New Jersey state police are searching a location there in connection with the shootings. Adam Lanza is believed to dead inside the school. It was initially reported that Lanza shot and killed his father in Hoboken, N.J., before arriving at the school in Connecticut; this has not been confirmed. The shooting took place just after 9:40 a.m. Friday. According to a witness report, the school’s principal and another staffer were killed while the vice principal was shot in the leg after the gunman opened fire. A witness said gunshots were heard in the hallway during a meeting this morning and that “100 rounds” must have been fired, according to CNN. After the shots were fired, three people ran into the hallway but only the vice principal crawled back. Police responded frantically to reports of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, and said the gunman was in the school’s main office, according to reports. The newspaper reports that as of 11 a.m., police were still searching the school with dogs; the death toll rose dramatically and shockingly throughout today. The event appeared to be the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, which left 32 people and the gunman dead. Story developing …

Hi Hater: Michael Vick’s Old High School Still Won’t Put His Jersey Back In Their Hall Of Fame

Mike Vick may have had the best comeback season ever, but his high school in Virginia is still not ready applaud him again. According to TMZ , even a petition from current students isn’t getting Vick back in Warwick High School’s hall of fame. Michael Vick’s former high school has REFUSED to re-hang the NFL star’s framed prep football jersey in their hallway … despite a spirited student-initiated campaign … TMZ has learned. Vick’s Jersey had been on display in the hallway at Warwick High in Newport News, VA until 2007 … when he was busted for that whole dogfighting ring. However, after Vick’s incredible NFL comeback this past season, hundreds of students rallied to get administrators to forgive Vick and re-hang his old #7. But school officials have made their decision — telling TMZ the jersey will NOT be returned on display for the remainder of the year. Officials tell us they believe the jersey would be a “distraction to the student’s education” … plus, faculty members are concerned the jersey could be vandalized or stolen. Ok, sure. Do you think Big Ben McRapey ‘s old school has those same concerns?

Lady Gaga Backstage At The VMAs: The Realest Girl, The Meatiest Dress

Bigger Than the Sound captures a few moments when the cameras weren’t rolling. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Mark Ralston/ Getty Images On Sunday night at the Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga won everything besides Best Contemporary World Music Album, but you probably couldn’t tell by the way she acted. Or at least I couldn’t. After all, I was standing roughly 3 feet from her as she descended from the stage, Video of the Year Moonman in one hand, short-loin inspired clutch in the other. And at that moment, she didn’t seem like the biggest pop icon on the planet, a woman who genuinely inspires millions and appears determined to speak for the voiceless and use her status to elicit actual social change . Instead, she seemed like a very demure, very humble human being. This may have had something to do with the fact that she had just accepted an award from Cher (which can definitely be a disorienting experience), or because she had just won her eighth Moonman of the night, but it definitely struck me as odd. After all, if you take everything you know or have read about her, combine it with her videos, fashion sense and over-the-top, decidedly feisty live performances, you are left with a picture that is less human and more, well, deity. Gaga does not appear to be human — more like a pneumatic lion tamer with a penchant for creative haberdashery, or a fire-breathing neo-Shiva in sunglasses — which is sort of the point, I suppose. But, as I learned on VMA night, it’s not actually the truth. I don’t know why it took me so long to realize this. After all, I have interviewed her and used this very space earlier this year to examine her transformation from otherworldly star to a normal girl . But there was something about watching her fight back tears at the VMAs — something she continued to do backstage, just in case you were wondering — that made it click for me. I watched as she hugged Cher, whispered something to her and then made the trek down to her dressing room, still shaking slightly, still saying “thank you” to the various stagehands and show producers who shouted their congratulations as she passed. I followed her and her entourage out of the theater, trying to keep my eyes on her tiny shoulders as she was surrounded by a ring of beefy security guards. This is much tougher to do than you would imagine; after all, Gaga is very small in person, practically delicate. She does not walk as much as she tiptoes, mostly because of the McQueen armadillo heels she wears, but also because you get the sense that the slightest breeze would knock her over. There is a fine, almost-porcelain quality to her. You want to put her on a glass shelf. You want to run a feather duster over her. There are not many deities you can say this about. Her entourage headed downstairs, and again, I followed. They made their way into the hallway beneath the stage, a carpeted pathway lined with dressing rooms. Most of the stars heard her coming and popped their heads out to catch a glimpse of her. Yes, she has that kind of clout. I watched from a wall as her team of stylists emerged from her dressing room and started clapping and cheering, and only then did I notice that Gaga was smiling. This was the real her, the person that only her closest friends — and, I suppose, nosy reporters — get to see. The Gaga that only comes out when the camera’s aren’t around (which is something, like, three hours of each day). There were still tears in her eyes, though now she wasn’t crying; she was laughing, making a kind of gulping sound. It was exactly the kind of thing you or I would do in a situation like this, when we have just triumphed and are now getting to share that moment with our friends. And I watched as she disappeared into her room, followed by her inner circle. The door closed, and her security guards fell into place, but you could definitely hear the celebratory whoop that happened immediately afterward. It was certainly genuine. After all, Gaga cares about winning awards, though I suspect it has more to do with the fact that she gets to share the victory with her friends. That’s the kind of person I’m guessing she is. I don’t know how long she stayed in there, because I was already making my way down to the other end of the hallway, where Kanye West was having an impromptu, celeb-filled party in his dressing room. It stopped traffic. Usher popped in. Rihanna did too. There were ballerinas involved. The contrast between the two rooms was noteworthy. Because even when the lights aren’t on, Kanye still carries himself like a deity. It’s part of his mystique. Gaga is different. She doesn’t need a mystique; being human seems to be enough for her. And, yes, I realize I’m making tremendous assumptions based on a few unguarded moments, but you learn a lot from someone when they know the cameras aren’t rolling, when it’s just them, their closest confidants and maybe a Moonman or two. For a minute, I got to see the real Lady Gaga, and it was all I needed. She cries and laughs and even gulps on occasion. She is humble and genuine. She is human, after all, even when she’s wearing a meat dress. You learn something new every day. Share your thoughts on Gaga’s victorious VMA night in the comments below. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
