Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty The Actor Has Words For The Real-Life Family Of Dr. Don Shirley Mahershala Ali had himself a big night at the Golden Globes on Sunday, winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Greenbook. The movie has received critical acclaim since it was released last year, however it didn’t come without controversy. First, co-star Viggo Mortenson had a N-word slip-up during a Q&A panel. Then, the family of the man the movie was based on, Dr. Don Shirley, wasn’t too happy with the movie. The film follows the piano virtuoso as he takes on his 1962 concert tour in the Deep South alongside his Italian bodyguard Tony ‘Lip’ Vallelonga (played by Viggo Mortensen). The real-life family of Shirley criticized many aspects of the film in a talk with Shadow and Act with Shirley’s brother even calling it a “symphony of lies.” Family members asserted that Dr. Shirley and Vallelonga weren’t even “friends” like the movie promoted and the real-life Shirley was against the biopic which was co-written by Vallelonga’s son Nick Vallelonga. Smh. Well after Mahershala’s Golden Globe win, he addressed the controversy backstage, according to Page Six: “I will say this,” Ali said, “My job is always the same: I have to look at what I am doing and be responsible for it.” He then went on to say that everyone involved with the movie worked hard and he doesn’t want to “throw away” what everyone has done: “I respect the family…and Doc Shirley,” he said. “I spoke to the studio and the family and at the end of the day you wish everyone was happy and you don’t want to offend anyone in any capacity.” Mahershala is telling the truth about talking to Shirley’s family. According to Shadow and Act , he called Shirley’s nephew Edwin Shirley III. Edwin told Shadow and Act , “He called me and my Uncle Maurice in which he apologized profusely if there had been any offense. What he said was, ‘If I have offended you, I am so, so terribly sorry. I did the best I could with the material I had. I was not aware that there were close relatives with whom I could have consulted to add some nuance to the character.’” Well at least one person in Hollywood has some tact and of course, it’s the Black man. If you watched this week’s episode of Teen Mom OG , then you know that Amber Portwood didn’t exactly come off looking great. But amazingly, her tweets during the show proved even more damaging to her reputation! The episode sees Amber’s baby daddy, Gary Shirley, and his wife, Kristina, voicing some of the same criticisms that fans have been directing at Amber in recent months. Like so many of the show’s viewers, Gary and Kristina apparently feel that Amber should’ve spent more time looking into Andrew Glennon’s sketchy past before she started dating him seriously and got pregnant with his baby. Not only that, they take issue with Amber not seeing her daughter for months and using her depression as a justification–despite the fact that she was apparently mentally healthy enough to begin dating Glennon. Maybe Amber was depressed, and maybe too much is being made of Glennon’s past, but it’s not hard to see why a father and stepmother might be concerned by the situation. And Gary voiced those concerns at length in the episode: “I don’t know what skeletons he has in his closet, but honestly, she should have waited,” he said to Kristina. “She should have taken more time with Leah and focused on her responsibility as being a mother than jumping into a relationship. Well, she was, like, ‘I was mourning.’ I know that you’re sad after breaking up with someone — I get it.” “But your daughter can bring you just as much happiness,” Kristina interjected. Not surprisingly, Gary agreed: “From day one I’ve been a parent! From day one my issues never came in and stopped me from being a dad, you know?” he continued. “I don’t have the option to not be a parent, but you can go off and do what you want to do. I mean, that would be f–king awesome! You know? And you’re OK with it because you’re used to it. But you know, there’s one person that’s not OK with it, and that’s Leah.” From there, Kristina spiked the football by recounting a recent exchange with Leah: “It’s just like she told me, you know? ‘Matt was in the picture. Mommy broke up with Matt. Mommy don’t come around then because she’s too depressed,'” she recalled. “But then, all of a sudden, she brings over Andrew and she says: ‘Well Kristina, if she was too depressed to see me, she wasn’t too depressed to find a new man?’ And, you know, what do I say to that?” Gary then recalled a period of time in which Leah was so depressed by her mother’s absence that she did nothing but sleep. “Let’s adopt Leah,” Kristina proposed. “I’m with you,” Gary replied. Not surprisingly, Amber had much to say about the situation on social media: “Make sure to watch Gary and Kristina tonight talking sh!t about me! It must be hard making money off of me! Being such a bad mom and all. Where would they be?” she tweeted. “Wait..in a 1 bedroom shack in the ghetto of Anderson where he was before I got out and the show came back on!! Ignorant!” And if you thought she’d stop there, you don’t know Amber: “[Kristina] broke up her family for money and tv!” Amber tweeted, targeting Gary’s wife. “Her husband got a restraining order on her cheating @ss with multiple people and then cheated with Gary! What about her daughter? Straight out of Gary’s mouth!!” “Restraining order to keep my child from filming,” Kristina replied. “I am an active mother to my children so quit hating. I’ve never stepped on your toes as a mother nor will I ever. I care for Leah when she is in our care. Love don’t hate.” Then things got even more bizarre when Farrah Abraham’s father, Michael, interjected: “Kristina stay strong. DO NOT LET ANYONE BULLY you. You’re the real proven mother figure here,” Michael tweeted. “Gary has always been the rock solid father protecting his children with you in full support and I’m thankful to God for both of you – the world knows the truth and that’s pure FACT.” We’d say this situation can’t get any weirder, but Michael Abraham just got involved, so stay tuned. On last night’s episode of Teen Mom OG , Gary Shirley insinuated that Amber Portwood isn’t exactly the most competent and responsible mother on the planet. In fact, he suggested she’s incapable of simple tasks like ensuring that 7-year-old Leah brushes her teeth. In what must have been an embarrassing scene for Amber to watch, the episode featured Gary explaining to Leah that she has to promise to be diligent about her oral hygiene, as her mother isn’t up to the task of enforcing rules: “It’s hard for me to get her to do those kinds of things,” Shirley said of Amber. “I remind her and she gets mad at me. I need you to be the big girl and brush your teeth.” He later explained to his wife: “It’s very important for her routine to stay consistent and not to stop. Obviously I would love to have Leah with me every single day no matter what, but under these circumstances things don’t work that way. “I just want to make sure Leah’s safe, Leah is taken care of and Leah’s teeth are getting brushed.” And the shade throwing didn’t stop there. Gary also expressed his frustration over the fact that Amber would still be unable to take Leah to school, even though her new home would mean a considerably shorter commute. For obvious reasons, Amber didn’t take too kindly to this criticism. Seemingly to underscore the argument that Amber and Matt Baier are more concerned with living the posh life than with raising Leah, we were treated to yet another scene of the controversial couple splurging in a local furniture store. Amber clapped back on Twitter after receiving come criticism from fans. Unfortunately, her response doesn’t make a whole hell of a lot of sense: “It’s just ridiculous to think I’m incapable of bringing my child to school,” she tweeted. “I will fight to be the mother I deserve to be.” Come again? Seems like she should be more concerned about being the sort of mother that Leah deserves, don’t ya think? But what do we know? The weird thing about this situation is that Amber, Gary and Matt were all getting along just last week. We’re guessing that’s officially a thing of the past. Hey, it was fun while it lasted! Anika Noni Rose Set To Star And Produce New Shirley Chisholm Biopic Actress Anika Noni Rose is set to only produce but star in a new biopic about the life and times of politician Shirley Chisholm according to Essence Magazine : A film about Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress, is currently in development and Tony award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose is set to produce and star in the production. According to Shadow & Act, Viola Davis was originally attached to the film when it was first announced in 2010. In an update, Barbara Bullard, a producer on the film, confirmed to the site that Rose is currently set to produce and star. #BlackGirlMagic AP
Looks like Amber Portwood, Jenelle Evans and Farrah Abraham aren’t the only Teen Mom alumni who know how to stir up controversy via Twitter. Portwood‘s baby daddy, Gary Shirley, let loose on the social media site with a series of angry tweets about his ex – Kristina, not Amber, fortunately. “Give a girl a promise ring after 9 months of dating, find out she’s in a relationship w someone else after she said she broke up with them f–k!” he wrote. “Lol the sad thing is I believed everything she said haha d–n! Told her she should act!” Shirley revealed that his daughter with Amber Portwood , Leah, “really liked her that’s what tears me apart! [sic] I’m single and hopefully I find a girl in the future.” “Not right now, but I’ll give a year …” For anyone hoping for a reunion between Gary and Portwood, who was recently released from prison, he insisted, “(not amber) that ship sailed!” Even a year won’t change that. The Teen Mom dad later deleted the tweets about Kristina and most other mentions of his girlfriend on his Twitter timeline. Why the second thoughts? Shirley tells Radar , “You know how it is, you gotta be careful about what you say about people,” declining to speak on the split further … for now. There’s always next week.
