David Hasselhoff: I Was ‘The Ultimate Nick Fury’

Although Samuel L. Jackson has played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury in Iron Man , Iron Man 2 , Thor , Captain America , and the record-breaking Avengers , his portrayal of the cigar-chomping Marvel Comics government agent isn’t definitive to everyone. Like, say, to David Hasselhoff — Baywatch legend, Knight Rider icon, and star of the upcoming Piranha 3DD — who donned Fury’s signature eye patch and scowl in his own 1998 telefilm, earned Stan Lee ’s blessing, and claims that his is the “ultimate” Nick Fury. “I didn’t see The Avengers yet,” Hasselhoff admitted to Movieline while discussing his appearance — as David Hasselhoff — in the R-rated sequel Piranha 3DD . “I love Sam Jackson, but you know… my Nick Fury was the organic Nick Fury that was written and discussed with Stan Lee before anyone got in there to change it. Nick Fury was written to be tongue-in-cheek, and he had a cigar in his mouth, he was a tough guy — he was cool.” Hasselhoff says he had earned Lee’s praise for his turn as Fury, who comes out of retirement in the 1998 film Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. to battle HYDRA. So he was a little miffed to learn the character would be portrayed by someone else — even if that someone was Jackson. “Stan Lee said, ‘You’re the ultimate Nick Fury,’” he remembered. “Avi Arad, when they bought it, said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re going to be the Nick Fury forever,’ and they lied. [Pause] But that happens to me all the time. That’s when you realize life isn’t fair.” Hasselhoff, meanwhile, has been trying to revive another of his past projects anew — not Baywatch (alas!), but Knight Rider — his popular ’80s series co-starring a tricked-out, artificially intelligent car named KITT. Numerous attempts to revive the series in film and television form have been made in the years since Knight Rider went off the air (including, most recently, a 2008 TV series that lasted one season), but the latest iteration — a film adaptation, currently at the Weinstein Co. — is what Hasselhoff has his sights set on. In fact, he told Movieline, it’s the Weinstein Co.’s Knight Rider film that helped entice Hasselhoff to take part in Piranha 3DD . “Bob Weinstein called me and said, ‘Come on, man — if you do this movie and it does really well, I’ll put you in Scary Movie ,” Hasselhoff said, “‘and then we own Knight Rider , maybe we can put you in the Knight Rider movie…’” Still, Hasselhoff wouldn’t mind finding his way back into the Marvel fold — perhaps in Avengers 2 ? “I had a blast playing Nick Fury,” he said. “And if it ever came back and Nick Fury has a brother — Dick Fury? — I’d be there.” Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . ‘Walking Dead’ Death Was Necessary, Producer Says

‘The Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story,’ show runner Glen Mazzara tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal’s offing. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead” Photo: Gene Page / AMC Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead! The inevitable has finally happened: Shane Walsh is dead. Double-dead, in fact. In the latest episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Better Angels,” Jon Bernthal’s disgruntled ex-cop finally met his demise at the hands of old friend-turned-new foe Rick Grimes. After luring Rick out into a field in search of missing prisoner Randall — whom Shane had already killed — Shane turned his gun on Rick, ready to kill his former partner and inherit his “broken wife” and “weak boy” as his own family. Rick ultimately talked Shane down, but what looked to be a peace offering was a trick of its own: Grimes plunged a knife through Shane’s heart, killing him in seconds … … and seconds later, Shane was back on his feet, a bloodthirsty zombie looking to finish the job. Thankfully for Rick, his son Carl arrived in the nick of time, gun in hand, to put a bullet through the undead Shane’s brain. Shane’s death was always a foregone conclusion in the minds of fans. Rampant rumors of Bernthal’s “Walking Dead” exit aside, the character’s demise occurs in the sixth issue of Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, making his eventual death a virtual certainty from the time Bernthal’s casting was announced. But speaking with MTV News, “Walking Dead” show runner Glen Mazzara revealed that Shane’s death wasn’t always part of the plan. “At one point, we considered not killing Shane,” Mazzara told MTV News. “But what’s important about this season is, Rick has to step forward. He has to assume leadership of the group and he has to confront Shane.” With that in mind, there was only one way for the Rick/Shane confrontation to end. Though Shane is killed by young Carl in the comics, it was important to the “Walking Dead” writers that Rick be the one to pull the trigger — or bury the knife, as the case may be — on the show. “Rick has to be the one to kill Shane. He needs to take control of the group,” Mazzara said. “That’s a huge loss for him, personally, for the group, but that’s what’s important about that: that it’s at Rick’s hand. We had considered doing it with a gun, but the knife was as personal as possible.” Many onlookers agree that Bernthal’s work as Shane has been the highlight of “Walking Dead” season two, so losing the character and the actor — especially so soon after Jeffrey DeMunn’s departure — is certainly a blow for the show. But for the writers, season two has largely been about transforming Rick from reluctant leader to confident decision-maker. In Mazzara’s opinion, the successful metamorphosis was made possible by Shane’s death. “It’s about Rick’s leadership, and if you see Rick [currently], when he steps forward and he discusses things with the group, you know that that’s a very different Rick than the one that came in at the beginning of the season,” the show runner said. “That’s what this season was about. It was about Rick, and the Shane element was just not part of Rick’s continuing story. It was a problem that Rick had to deal with.” Will you miss Shane on “The Walking Dead,” or do you think he needed to die? Tell us in the comments section!

Rachel Crow Wants Eminem On Her Nickelodeon Show

‘X Factor’ alum tells MTV News her Nick pilot will be ‘really Rachel.’ By Christina Garibaldi Rachel Crow Photo: MTV News Rachel Crow, the pint-size cutie who won over America on “The X Factor” and made a lasting impression with her heartbreaking elimination , may have come out of the singing competition a winner after all. Just last month, Crow not only landed a recording contract with Columbia Records, but also signed an overall talent deal with Nickelodeon to star in her own musical-comedy pilot. MTV News caught up with Crow on the set of the Nick series “Fred: The Show,” where she will be a series regular as the character Starr. “My head was exploding when I couldn’t tell anyone,” Crow said about her new projects. “I kept telling people, ‘Oh, stuff will be coming out soon,’ and then it kept getting pushed back, pushed back, and I was like, ‘People are gonna think I’m lying!’ But I’m so happy I can tell everyone about it now. I’m really excited.” Crow, who finished in fifth place on “X Factor,” has not yet started filming her own series but promises it will be a true representation of her personality. “I’ve been thinking about it. We’re kind of in the first stages of deciding what it’s gonna be now,” Crow said. “But it’ll be really fun, really Rachel. We’ll see how it goes. I’m still thinking about it, something really fun and something that kids can relate to.” In addition to staying true to herself, she’s also hoping to reach an audience that may not be too familiar with her: the boys. “I want to reach the boy audience, because I know that’s really hard to do,” Crow admitted. “Boys don’t usually watch a really girly show, but I want to make sure that it’s a family-oriented, very fun, edgy, wacky show.” And to get that edgy twist she is looking for, she already has some dream guest stars in mind. “I’ve always wanted to sing with Eminem . I know, it’s really weird. I really love him,” Crow said. “I would really love for [‘Fred: The Show’ star] Lucas [Cruikshank] to be on my show, a lot of the Nickelodeon stars. I’m still super excited, I can’t even believe what’s happening.” Are you excited for Rachel Crow’s Nickelodeon show? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Rachel Crow
