Mahershala Ali Responds To ‘Greenbook’ Backlash After Family Blasts It For Inaccuracies

Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty The Actor Has Words For The Real-Life Family Of Dr. Don Shirley Mahershala Ali had himself a big night at the Golden Globes on Sunday, winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Greenbook.  The movie has received critical acclaim since it was released last year, however it didn’t come without controversy. First, co-star Viggo Mortenson had a N-word slip-up during a Q&A panel. Then, the family of the man the movie was based on, Dr. Don Shirley, wasn’t too happy with the movie. The film follows the piano virtuoso as he takes on his 1962 concert tour in the Deep South alongside his Italian bodyguard Tony ‘Lip’ Vallelonga (played by Viggo Mortensen). The real-life family of Shirley criticized many aspects of the film in a talk with Shadow and Act with Shirley’s brother even calling it a “symphony of lies.” Family members asserted that Dr. Shirley and Vallelonga weren’t even “friends” like the movie promoted and the real-life Shirley was against the biopic which was co-written by Vallelonga’s son Nick Vallelonga. Smh. Well after Mahershala’s Golden Globe win, he addressed the controversy backstage, according to Page Six: “I will say this,” Ali said, “My job is always the same: I have to look at what I am doing and be responsible for it.” He then went on to say that everyone involved with the movie worked hard and he doesn’t want to “throw away” what everyone has done: “I respect the family…and Doc Shirley,” he said. “I spoke to the studio and the family and at the end of the day you wish everyone was happy and you don’t want to offend anyone in any capacity.” Mahershala is telling the truth about talking to Shirley’s family. According to Shadow and Act , he called Shirley’s nephew Edwin Shirley III. Edwin told Shadow and Act , “He called me and my Uncle Maurice in which he apologized profusely if there had been any offense. What he said was, ‘If I have offended you, I am so, so terribly sorry. I did the best I could with the material I had. I was not aware that there were close relatives with whom I could have consulted to add some nuance to the character.’” Well at least one person in Hollywood has some tact and of course, it’s the Black man. You can check out more of Mahershala’s post win talk in the clip below.

Five New Internet Scams to Watch Out For

Ho Sit Down: Glenn Beck Says Immigrants “Learned From The Klan…They Are Just Changing Their Hood”

Somebody please cancel Glenn’s show. He’s making our ears bleed. Glenn Beck Says Immigrants Learned From The Klan If immigrants learned from the Klan, then where did a racist azzhole like Glenn learn how to be such a loser? According to Raw Story Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) on Tuesday that immigrant activists have the “same ideology” as the Ku Klux Klan but they “are just changing their hood.” Over the weekend, about 300 activists traveled had traveled to Kobach’s home after holding a prayer vigil and and a town hall event to protest his efforts to crackdown on immigrants, including a role in an Arizona law which was eventually overturned by the United States Supreme Court. “I believe that this is the same exact tactics used by the Klan in the 1960s,” Beck declared on Tuesday. “And they’re doing it in the name of civil rights. But make no mistake, you are on the right side. You are the new civil rights movement.” “The civil rights movement did produce some laws that would stop you from doing these kinds of things,” he observed. “Have you thought about going and using the civil rights laws to stop this kind of harassment and intimidation at your own home?” “They’re called the Klan laws,” Kobach explained. “They’re a set of laws that say you cannot intimidate an official by trespassing his property or threatening violence, you cannot intimidate an individual by threatening violence so that they don’t vote or they don’t exercise their civil rights. And arguably both of those might apply here because they were trying to intimidate me as an elected official to change my point of view, and certainly they don’t like what I’ve been saying for years and doing for years to stop illegal immigration.” “You know, this is exactly — they’re just not wearing white cloaks, but this is exactly the KKK-type of intimidation,” he added. “These people have learned from the Klan,” Beck agreed. “The left is set up on revenge. And so they’re using the tactics of those who kept them down in the past, that we all tried to defeat — or at least all decent-minded Americans wanted to defeat and tried to defeat. And so they are just changing their hood and changing their language.” “But it is not changing who they really, truly are and what they are trying to do.” Earlier this week, Kobach insisted to Fox News that he was prepared to take advantage of his Second Amendment rights and use deadly force against “illegal aliens” rallying at his house if necessary. “Mob activity is always the same,” Beck remarked on Tuesday. “And it’s led by a few, and it’s led by people like Brown Shirts or the Klan or whatever you want to call it, hate groups. And they come and they march and they force you to salute and they force you to be silent.” Maybe someone should take Glenn and lynch, burn, and torture him then he could see that immigrants and the Klan are not the same thing.

Lindsay Lohan: Out of Control and Unwilling to Change?

Things are looking worse by the day for troubled star Lindsay Lohan, according to friends who say she is out of control and resistant to getting her act together. Less than 24 hours before she clocked Tiffany Mitchell at a nightclub and got arrested, Lohan was “dancing like crazy” and “causing a scene” at another NYC club. When she thought she lost her phone, says an onlooker, Lohan flipped out, and “she even demanded that a girl at a nearby table empty her pockets.” The following night, Lohan was drunk, according to reports, when she got into it with Tiffany Mitchell. Lohan denies punching anyone, but is due in court January 7. Punch or no punch, Lindsay continues to struggle with alcohol , says a friend. TMZ cited a source last week claiming she downs two liters of vodka A DAY. That may be a slight stretch, but few at this point doubt she’s got a problem. One she’s either blind to our unwilling to do anything about, her pals lament. “She will fool people into thinking she’s changed this time, but at some point in the night, she always snaps and it’s always the same story,” says one confidant. After the nightclub incident, Lohan’s assistant Gavin Doyle grew concerned. He Tweeted to her: “@lindsaylohan after bailing you out last night I HOPE and PRAY you get the help you so desperately need. We are ALL rooting for you. xxx.” Lohan is “out of control,” adds a second source, noting that Lindsay refuses to go to rehab . “Her friends don’t know what to do. She won’t ever change.” After her recent slew of criminal charges – for lying to police following her June car crash – she’s due back in a Los Angeles courtroom on December 12. Because Lohan is still on probation, those charges, combined with the possible assault, could land her in jail if Judge Stephanie Sautner deems it necessary. A conviction isn’t necessary to trigger a probation violation. The last time the starlet appeared before Sautner, the judge warned Lohan that she could face 245 days in jail if she slipped up again. Think this qualifies? Despite her apparent downward spiral, some friends insist she’ll pull through. Another source close to the 26-year-old starlet denies that she has a problem and says that it’s the “near constant criticism” that’s taking a toll on her. “If everything you did was criticized, you’d lash out too,” says the pal. “But she’ll be fine, she’s tough. She’ll probably outlive everyone.” At this rate, we wouldn’t exactly put money on that on InTrade. Lindsay Lohan: Can she get her $hit together?!   Yes, she’s learned her lesson by now! No, she’s spineless, weak and surrounded by enablers! View Poll »

WATCH: Chris Rock On Why He Talks To An Obama Cut-out in 2 Days in New York: Rick James Wasn’t Available

Barack Obama occupies the same pantheon as late “Superfreak” singer Rick James, according to Chris Rock. In the Julie Delpy-directed 2 Days in New York , Rock plays a Village Voice writer and radio-show host who occasionally carries on one-sided conversations with a life-size cut-out of the president, and at the Cinema Society and MCM-hosted screening of the film in New York on Wednesday, the comic told Movieline pal Grace Randolph why the cardboard Commander in Chief got the nod. “He’s the first black president. You can’t really top him right now,” Rock told Randolph at the Landmark Sunshine Theater on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, adding “And it’s hard to find a cardboard cut-out of Rick James.” Randolph also spoke to Delpy and other cast members of the movie, as well as the Rev. Al Sharpton. Check out the video below. Watch It on YouTube. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Toe Pick! Bourne Legacy’s Tony Gilroy (Fondly) Remembers His 1992 Olympic Skating Romance The Cutting Edge

Sure, he adapted the Bourne series, Stephen King’s Dolores Claiborne , 2009’s State of Play , and earned Oscar nods for writing and directing his own politically-tinged thriller, Michael Clayton – but any chat with The Bourne Legacy co-writer/director Tony Gilroy would be remiss without discussing his very first screenplay, amirite ? So without further ado, take a triple lutz down memory lane with Movieline and Gilroy as he recalls the joy of seeing his first produced script come to life. That’s right, lovers of Olympian sports sagas and ‘90s-era romance: we’re taking Gilroy back to The Cutting Edge . Gilroy earned his first credit with the 1992 romantic dramedy, about a high maintenance figure skater (Moira Kelly) and an ex-hockey star (D.B. Sweeney) who reluctantly pair up to compete in the XVI Olympic Winter Games. Despite underperforming at the box office, The Cutting Edge was a ‘90s staple that went on to enjoy a popular home video/cable afterlife, like so many films of the decade; the opposites-attract Taming of the Shrew -on-ice set-up proved so rich that ABC Family resurrected the brand 14 years later, spawning three more sequels, and was memorably spoofed in the Will Ferrell vehicle Blades of Glory . For most fans, the phrase “toe pick” vividly conjures the feisty chemistry between Kelly’s Kate Moseley and Sweeney’s Doug Dorsey. And though he subsequently launched full-bore into more heady, decidedly Tony Gilroy-esque terrain (2009’s Duplicity , perhaps, comes closest), Gilroy lit up when we brought up arguably his most cherished early work. So, we’ve got to talk about The Cutting Edge , a movie I loved and watched more times over than I can recall. Tony Gilroy: [Laughing] Were you a skater? No, but I was a girl! Gilroy: And there’s only one kiss in there! Talk about a chaste movie. All they get is one kiss at the end, in public. From that to this…? I can still say “toe pick” and people know exactly what I’m talking about. Gilroy: [Laughs] You’re making my day. How did you go from an Olympics-themed skating romance to the politically-charged, character-driven complex dramas you went on to write and direct? Do you see any throughline there? Gilroy: So many scripts! I always like to do something different, but I don’t know – it’s always the same, it’s always what’s right for the idea of the movie. What possessed you to write a movie like this in the first place? I’d written some very serious scripts before that, and I was so desperate to get a movie made that when I sat down with [producer] Robert Cort and he said, “You wrote this other movie and it’s this Preston Sturgess-esque kind of movie and I like the relationship between the two people, they’re always bickering — and I want to do a skating movie. Because every seven years there has to be a skating movie, and we’re due.” I go, “A skating movie? Well, if I write this, will you get it made? Because I’m tired of writing movies that don’t get made.” He was in a really powerful position at Interscope and he’s a great guy. He said, “If you write this, I’m going to make this movie.” So I poured myself into it and did everything I could not to get fired and stay on, and it was tremendous fun. Do you remember it fondly? Oh my god, yes. Visiting the first production office where your movie’s going, and walking in realizing there are 60, 80 people going to work because you sat in a room… it’s just the coolest. Keira Knightley Orgasms on Stage During Lesbian Play

Brit beauty Keira Knightley recently described her experience starring with Mad Men babe Elizabeth Moss in the classic lesbian play The Children’s Hour on the West End stage: “Oh, God, the only thing that’s going through my head to describe it is it’s like sex with an orgasm at the end of it!” We’re sure Elizabeth feels the same way, Keira. Keira explains what it’s like being on stage as a boarding school teacher accused of eating at the Y with one of her female co-workers, as opposed to being in a non-nude movie about pirates: “Whereas film is like you have sex, but you never get the orgasm. A lot of stopping and starting… It’s the completion of the story, the full arc.” Her rug-munching role also skinspired Keira, who has already played a bare-breasted bisexual bounty huntress in Domino , to find new ways to really get into her character: “If I’m not getting better, not learning, not changing, then what’s the point of it? It must be boring for people to watch it if it’s always the same.” That depends on whether “the same” means “fully clothed” or “fully frontal.”
