Elsewhere In The World: Sean Penn Has Put Haiti On Hold To Save North Africa

What would Black folks in the world do without Sean Penn in this decade? After basically living in Haiti for an entire year starting last January following the earthquake, Sean Penn, who we’re certain hasn’t abandoned his new part-time island home for good, is now fighting for North Africa. After waving an Egyptian flag in Cairo’s Tahrir Square Friday, Sean Penn has continued west on his humanitarian tour of North Africa. The actor made a stop in Tripoli, Libya, where he spoke to reporters about the state of the country post-Moammar Gadhafi. So what did the star have to say? Penn refused to talk about what his exact plans were in the Libyan capital when he chatted with the press outside his hotel, but he did praise the country’s citizens for their efforts in ousting the dictator, saying he admired “the courage to say ‘we want freedom.’” “It’s an extraordinary thing,” he gushed, adding that he was confident Libya could truly become a democracy. “An enormous price has been paid, but I think there is no question that they can follow it through,” he said. Last week the 51-year-old star was in Cairo, where he was invited by Egyptian-born actor Khaled el-Nabawi to participate in a rally demanding that military rulers speed up the transfer of power to civilians after an 18-day revolt caused the ouster of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in February. Citizens are worried the power will go to Mubarak supporters. Thank you, Based Sean Penn. No seriously… because which famous one of “us” have you heard go there? Source

IT’S OFFICIAL!!! Hosni Mubarak Steps Down And Concedes All Presidential Power!

Bout damn time! Don’t let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya! Cairo, Egypt (CNN) — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down Friday and handed over power to the military, his nearly three decades of iron rule ended by a groundswell of popular protests that began January 25. In a somber, one-minute announcement on state television, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced Mubarak’s resignation and said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will “run the affairs of the country.” As Suleiman spoke, deafening cheers erupted among tens of thousands of Egyptians who thronged the streets of Cairo. It was a moment they had sought throughout long, often tense days of demonstrations — some of them violent — that demanded Mubarak’s departure. It was also a moment that many in the Arab world’s powerhouse nation had not dared contemplate. Chants of “Egypt is free!” and “God is great!” rose from the crowds, dizzy in the honeymoon of their success. Some waved Egyptian flags; others honked horns; still others set off fireworks as they savored the scene. Two major bridges over the Nile River resembled congested parking lots, and partiers packed streets throughout Cairo. The state-run Middle East News Agency said some people had passed out from joy and others had suffered heart attacks. “It was a sense of liberation for me, for every Egyptian,” said opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei. “For the first time, Egypt has a chance to be democratic, to be free, to have a sense of dignity, of freedom. So it’s amazing. It’s just like something we never experienced in our lifetime.” Hopefully the Egyptian people get an opportunity to choose the kind of government they want to rule the country now. Lindsay Lohan and Hosni Mubarak

“Congratulations to the people of Egypt,” Lindsay Lohan, 24, Tweeted Friday afternoon, hours after news broke that President Hosni Mubarak had abdicated his post after 18 days of protests. “Your voices were heard and you proved that peaceful demonstrations are possible and effective.” “And I pray Egypt maintains it#39;s [SIC] treaty with Israel,” Lohan continued in another Tweet, “and sets the trend for its neighbors to create peace with Israel and the entire region.” Enough about her dress. Mubarak Quits As Head Of Egypt’s Ruling Party

Egypt’s hated President Hosni Mubarak has quit as head of the country’s ruling party. Other leaders, including Mubarak’s son Gamal and secretary-general Safwat el-Sharif, have also resigned in a gesture to anti-government protesters occupying Tahrir Square in Cairo. Thousands of demonstrators have occupied the square for 12 days, vowing to stay until Mubarak steps down as president. Earlier, the military surrounded the square, but soldiers continued to let people join the growing rally. This morning, a gas terminal was blown up in the country’s northern Sinai Peninsula, starting a massive fire that could be seen dozens of miles away.It is believed the attack was part of on-going protests against President Hosni Mubarak’s regime. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned the Middle East faces a “perfect storm” of unrest, with the looming risk of even greater instability. In a speech to a Munich security conference, she said: “The region is being battered by a perfect storm of powerful trends. “This is what has driven demonstrators into the streets of Tunis, Cairo, and cities throughout the region. The status quo is simply not sustainable.” No injuries were reported in the explosion, and the blaze was quickly brought under control after the gas flow was shut off. The governor of the region, Abdel Wahab Mabrouk, said he suspected “sabotage”, but provided no details. Anti-government protesters have been demanding Mubarak’s removal from power for the past two weeks. The Sinai Peninsula, home to Bedouin tribesmen, has been the scene of clashes between residents and security forces. Source
