Lil Wayne, T.I. Family Members Discuss Life With Jailed Rappers

‘No one wants to see anyone in jail, especially their kids’ father and husband,’ Lil Wayne’s ex Antonia Carter says. By Jayson Rodriguez Antonia Carter and Tameka Cottle Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Lil Wayne began his one-year prison stint this month just as T.I. is preparing to complete his sentence . While fans of both have expressed how much they miss the superstar rappers , the circumstances have been especially trying for each artist’s family members. The mothers of their children, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle and Antonia “Toya” Carter, spoke to Honey magazine recently and revealed what it’s been like for them as T.I. transitions from a halfway house to freedom and Wayne serves out his term. “No one wants to see anyone in jail, especially their kids’ father and husband,” Lil Wayne’s ex-wife Toya said. “Wayne and I have a great relationship. That’s just not anywhere that I want to see him. He’s never not been accessible. As long as we’ve been talking or dating I’ve never not be able to pick up the phone and call him no matter what is going on in my life. Now he’s locked up and it’s not like that anymore.” Late last year, T.I. was transfered from a federal prison to a halfway house in Atlanta. He’s permitted to leave the premises to work, which includes recording in the studio ; he’s already released his comeback effort “I’m Back.” On Friday (March 26), T.I. is scheduled to be sent home. Earlier this month, Tip made his first public appearance since turning himself in when he attended a charity event hosted by his fianc

Lil Wayne Told His Family To Be ‘Strong’ During His Incarceration, Ex-Wife Says

‘At this point it is what it is, and we just gotta make the best of it,’ Antonia ‘Toya’ Johnson told Vibe magazine. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne arrives in court on March 8, 2010 in New York City Photo: Louis Lanzano/ AP Images After several postponements due to dental surgery, a courthouse fire and court-date rescheduling, Lil Wayne finally turned himself in on Monday to begin his one-year jail sentence at Rikers Island. However, he wasn’t the only one feeling the strain. The rapper’s ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Johnson and daughter Reginae shuttled back and forth to the New York City courthouse from Atlanta in anticipation of his incarceration. “It was up and down, you know. One minute we thought he was going and she’d be sad, and then he don’t go,” Johnson told Vibe magazine recently. “We [were] in New York like two times and we ended up turning right back around because he didn’t go.” Despite all of the back-and-forth, Reginae missed seeing her father on Monday when he began his sentence stemming from a July 2007 gun-possession charge. “The last day he finally went in, we didn’t go, so my daughter was like, ‘I wish I would’ve went.’ It was just too much. I just didn’t want to let her see that again ’cause both times she took it real hard,” said Johnson. “So I was like, I’m not gon’ let her go this last time. I’m just gon’ make sure he talk to her ’cause I didn’t know if he was really gonna go. They kept pushing back.” Wayne might be the biggest rapper on the planet, but he’s just “Dad” to Reginae, so Johnson said the time apart will be hard on the 11 year-old. “He just told me to be strong and don’t really trip. Don’t let her see me down,” said Johnson. “At first my daughter would see me a little sad and you know kids they react off of your feelings sometimes, so he was just like, ‘Be strong, make sure you take care of her. Make sure she straight and keep her phone on all the time so I can call her. The time is gonna fly by.’ “The whole point of him being in jail is just not good for her — to say her dad’s in jail,” Johnson continued. “But at this point it is what it is, and we just gotta make the best of it. I’ma take her to visit him and talk to him and she’ll get through this eight months. It’ll fly by. I tell her all the time, ‘Just call daddy and tell him you love him,’ and he’ll be home soon.” Lil Wayne and Johnson married in 2004 and divorced in 2006. In 2009, Johnson and her friend, T.I.’s fianc

Who Can Visit Lil Wayne In Jail, And When?

Inmates at Rikers Island can refuse visitors — fans take note! By Jayson Rodriguez New York’s Rikers Island Prison Photo: MTV News Once Lil Wayne has turned himself in to begin his one-year prison sentence in New York, his label, the Miami-based Cash Money outfit, is expected to relocate its operations to the Big Apple both to be closer to its franchise artist and to show him support. That support, one assumes, will include plenty of visits to Wayne on Rikers Island, where the rapper will reside at the Eric M. Taylor Center, according to a corrections officer who spoke with MTV News. According to the New York City Department of Correction Web site , the rapper is afforded a number of visitation options during his incarceration. Each week, inmates are permitted two visits, which can last up to an hour and occur any day of the week except Monday and Tuesday, when the facility is closed to all visits. On those days when visitors are welcomed, hours for visits range from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Within those options lie scheduling blocks dictated by a sliding-scale that is determined by the first letter of a prisoner’s last name. The schedule is available by accessing the DOC Web site. For instance, next week (the week of March 14) inmates whose last names begin with the letters A-L, which would include Lil Wayne (real name: Dwayne Carter), are permitted visitors on Sunday and Wednesday only (on Friday each week all prisoners are permitted visitors). The following week (beginning March 21), inmates whose last names begin with the letters A-L have just Thursday allocated for visitors. During the following week (beginning March 28), Lil Wayne will have Sunday and Wednesday available for visitors. People who wish to visit inmates on Rikers Island don’t have to register ahead of time to schedule trips to the prison. The DOC advises visitors to take public transportation to the compound, although a small amount of parking spaces are available. And while anyone can visit, the inmate must approve the visitation, and the facility’s security personnel have the authority to reject any potential visitor (fans take note). Once visitors arrive at the facility, they are directed to the Central Visit Control Building, where they must complete a registration form and pass through a number of security clearances. Visitors must go through a metal detector and all of their items will be searched. In addition, visitors may also be selected for an ION Scan Test, which checks for the presence of narcotics or explosives. Canine searches may also be performed as well. Once the security posts are cleared, visitors then wait to be transported by shuttle to the specific prison (there are nine different jail houses on Rikers Island) that houses the inmate they came to see. Three visitors at a time are permitted to visit inmates; visits by an attorney, counselor, religious adviser or member of the media do not count toward the imprisoned person’s visits per week. Conjugal visits are not permitted unless the inmate is married to the visitor. During visits, inmates and family or friends can chat, and items can be given to incarcerated individuals; clothes are primarily permissible items. For Wayne, his visits may be the the only time he gets to interact with individuals beyond the guards assigned to protect his safety. A corrections officer, who didn’t wish to be identified because of the classified information he shared, told MTV News late last month that the rapper will be placed in a unit with inmates that meet a certain classification. “He’ll be housed with inmates who are classified in his category, and he’ll be able to be a regular inmate,” the guard said. “He’ll be able to watch television, go into the day room and congregate with people of his classification.”It’s a high-class area where he will be segregated from [the general] population,” the guard added. Is Lil Wayne Leaving Twitter Already?

Rapper threatens to quit after negative feedback on his philosophical tweets. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: James Crump/Getty Images Less than a week after officially joining Twitter , it looks like Lil Wayne may now give up on the micro-blogging service. He sent word on Thursday (February 25) that he’s going to stop using Twitter because the feedback led him to believe his messages weren’t wanted. “Gunna stop with the tweets now that I see they’re so unliked,” Wayne wrote . “It’s a mirror of my thoughts, and obviously my thoughts aren’t [welcome]. Sorry.” The rapper has only posted 18 times so far, but the sporadic tweets have been a mix of testing the waters and cryptic dispatches that are as loaded as his rhymes. “Love is a road without signs, yet we still drive bekuz we kan only imagine what’s ahead,” he wrote on Wednesday. While the Cash Money Records superstar’s presence on Twitter has been supported by many — he already has over 172,000 followers — it appears he’s been reading responses to his tweets that aren’t very flattering. Comedian Lil Duval has joked about the rapper’s philosophical tweets at Wayne’s expense. “I just found out Lil Wayne has a Twitter,” he wrote. “I just read his page, and I don’t have a clue bout what he’s talking ’bout.” Duval then started the hash tag #LilWayneDeepTweets . “When walking thru a path we see…………….the road,” the comedian wrote , mocking Wayne’s style. Other Twitter members then followed with an array of imitated Lil Wayne tweets . “I stood outside,” the 305 wrote. “Does that make me outstanding?” But Wayne’s fans have rallied with #weezydontleave. “You got me up at 3.30AM,” DorinaFbaby , a fan from Australia, wrote. “Barely awake beggin you to stay!” Next week, the rapper is expected to be sentenced to one year in prison after reaching a plead deal in his 2007 gun case. Wayne pleaded guilty to attempted gun possession and was set to begin his incarceration earlier this month, but a judge allowed a postponement due to dental surgery Wayne needed . Last week, he underwent eight root canals in one day . What do you think of Lil Wayne’s tweets? Should he stay on Twitter? Let us know in the comments below!
