The concert promoter behind Michael Jackson’s ill-fated “This Is It” tour has dropped a bid to collect their $17.5 million insurance company on the star. Why? AEG’s decision to drop its case against the insurer, Lloyds of London, comes after the firm claimed AEG hid the extent of the pop icon’s extensive health woes. Execs reportedly felt Jackson was an emotionally paralyzed mess leading up to the 50-show London gig he never ended up making; MJ died June 25, 2009. AEG says the move has nothing to do with the discovery of new emails that prove AEG had doubts about MJ’s health when it applied for the insurance policy. Lloyds had sued AEG and Michael Jackson LLC in the wake of the singer’s tragic demise to cancel the policy, claiming all parties involved were not forthright. The insurer believes that singer’s drug addiction – fueled by Dr. Conrad Murray , who was on AEG’s payroll – and poor health were common knowledge at the time. As such, they should have been disclosed, but were not. It looks like everyone’s moving on though. Lloyds says: “In exchange for AEG withdrawing its insurance claim, underwriters agreed to dismiss AEG from the case and to waive any costs recoverable from AEG.” Lloyds will continue its legal battle against Jackson’s estate, seeking “rescission of the policy due to non-disclosures of Michael Jackson’s prior drug use.” [Photo: WENN.com]

A woman claims that troubled star Amanda Bynes rear-ended her car and then drove off without exchanging insurance info Saturday afternoon. This would be the third alleged hit-and-run of the year for AB. Kisa, whose last name has been withheld by TMZ for the time being, says she was struck by Bynes driving her Toyota Corolla on Ventura Blvd. She didn’t recognize the woman at first – because she “looked like a hot mess” – but once they began talking, realized it was Amanda Bynes. Kisa says she got out her insurance card to exchange details, as is customary in such cases, but says Bynes “seemed nervous about that.” According to her, Bynes told her the damage “didn’t look that bad” and proceeded to push her bumper back into place … which didn’t work. Bynes then said they didn’t need to exchange info since neither car was damaged – Kisa says Bynes’ car had “significant” damage to it – and peaced out. Kisa called police, who responded to the scene. Kisa says when she told the officer who hit her, the officer replied, “Didn’t she just get a DUI?” As a matter of fact, police arrested Amanda Bynes for DUI April 6 … and she was also accused of hit and run incidents on May 5 and May 27. The best tidbit about E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey S&M erotica series, besides the fact that your mother may be reading the salacious bestselling tomes right this very second , is that the book trilogy began, as great cultural touchstones do, as Twilight fan fiction. So it’s all sorts of strange to watch Kristen Stewart and her Snow White and the Huntsman castmates Chris Hemsworth , Sam Claflin , and Charlize Theron reading steamy passages from the naughty, naughty 50 Shades of Grey aloud. Awesome or creepy (or both)? You decide! Props to MTV’s Josh Horowitz for getting the erstwhile Bella Swan to utter the lines hardcore 50 Shades fans have been imagining her saying since James’ kinky prose first hit the ‘net, but really: Did they have to make them say the 50 Shades killing words?? (Just die already, inner goddess.) High five to Stewart for being a good sport. Extra points to Theron for giving it all she had. Maybe there’s a part for her in the planned film adaptation — Mrs. Robinson, perhaps? [via MTV ]

So says Rufio himself! Chatting with Crave Online, Hook actor Dante Basco waxed nostalgic about imaginary food fightin’ with Robin Williams in the 1991 cult flick and let slip that he’s attached to produce a Rufio prequel, with Zorro director Rpin Suwannath at the helm. Of course, the project is A) currently only in development and B) going the indie route, so take it with a grain of salt. That said, in the spirit of the Lost Boys, let your inner kid dream big. Ru-fi-OOO! According to Basco, who appeared in two films at the Los Angeles Asian Film Festival, the Rufio film will be based on a musical that comedy troupe The Younger Statesmen wrote in college. “These guys have a whole storyline of how he gets the mohawk,” Basco told Crave . “The whole story’s crazy. These guys came with the script, I’m like, ‘You guys wrote this?'” “Not only did they write this, they did the musical in their college. They were going to go off Broadway with it and then they lost their insurance and they came to Hollywood. If anyone saw their play it’s that, but the newer version is pretty intense. They added more action. I never saw the play but I think they added more backstory to Rufio, like how he became Rufio which I was impressed by.” So: Good idea or bad idea? The original film made money but tanked with critics (though it did garner five Oscar nods), but ask any kid of the ’90s and I’d bet they’d watch a Rufio spin-off in a heartbeat. [via Crave Online ]

Geico for the greenery? Do tell… Medicinal Marijuana Growers Can Now Purchase Insurance For Protection Pot is on the top of a lot of minds right now. Oregon’s medical marijuana law has become one of the hottest election issues in Oregon’s attorney general race. Sixteen states and the District of Columbia now have medical marijuana laws. In just Oregon and Washington there are nearly 100,000 medical marijuana patients. Now this once fringe culture has taken another step towards the mainstream – growers and grower cooperatives can now buy insurance policies to protect their crops and marijuana inventories against losses. Insurance agent Dan DeChynne is one of the first to sell the pot policies in Oregon and Southwest Washington. “It covers every kind of possible case; fire, rain, or wind, theft, even raids,” he told KATU On Your Side Investigator Thom Jensen. We met DeChynne outside one of the new store fronts where patients buy medical marijuana insurance in Kalama, Wash. The policy at Releaf Medical Marijuana growers cooperative covers the brick and mortar, but it also protects the pot against losses from bugs, theft, fire and yes, even raids by local or state police. As he pushed a cart loaded with some of Releaf’s potent pain killer and sleep disorder pot called AK-47, manager Nate Hewitt told KATU the insurance protects patients more than anyone. “It’s priceless for me because of the value it is to the patients,” he said. Without the insurance, Hewitt said there are just too many variables that can ruin a marijuana crop or leave then vulnerable to raids and thefts. He said the insurance policies will help restore inventories more quickly after a loss so he can start delivering the medicine to patients. So how popular IS this new Indica insurance??? Michael Aberle of Statewide Insurance in Sacramento said his company underwrites between 3,500 to 4,000 marijuana policies right now. He said the industry cannot protect clients against federal raids because marijuana is still considered a controlled substance at the federal level. If insurance companies reimburse growers for their losses after federal raids, Aberle said, agents and insurance companies could be charged with aiding and abetting a crime. DeChynne said the policies begin at about $1,200 to $2,000 a year with a $5,000 deductible. My, my, how things have changed. How long do you think it will be before the government legalizes the green stuff? Source
