WATCH: Matthew McConaughey Hides Out In Jeff Nichols’ Southern Drama ‘Mud’

Writer-director Jeff Nichols returns with the Arkansas-set drama Mud , which vied for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and sweeps through the Sundance Film Festival this week with stars Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon in tow. Watch the film’s first trailer — which does indeed feature a shirtless McConaughey, along with simmering Southern-fried intrigue and a palpable sense of menace — and stay tuned for more updates from Park City. Synopsis: MUD is an adventure about two boys, Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and his friend Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), who find a man named Mud (Matthew McConnaughey) hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios—he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow. Mud hits theaters April 26, 2013 and also stars Sam Shepard, Michael Shannon, Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland. [via Yahoo ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Sam Shepard on Blackthorn, His Hollywood Years and Why He’ll Never Write a Memoir

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Oscar-nominated actor Sam Shepard doesn’t take a lot of lead film roles, but when he does, he makes them count. Take this week’s Blackthorn , the sweeping epic tale of what might have happened if — as some historians believe — legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy wasn’t gunned down by Bolivian forces in 1908, and instead went on to live a quiet, reclusive existence in that country under the pseudonym James Blackthorn.

Letter From Toronto: Descendants Overloaded with Calculation; Take Shelter Overloaded with Michael Shannon

Alexander Payne’s The Descendants has just about everything you need for a male midlife-crisis movie, and more: A big plot of unspoiled family land about to be sold off to developers, sullen teenagers, a wife in a coma. Payne, in his first full-length feature since the 2004 Sideways , pulls out all the stops, including casting George Clooney, an actor who’s aging beautifully but who nonetheless, thankfully, has allowed himself to look his age.

Christian Slater Plays My Favorite Scene: ‘That’s the Most Romantic Moment in Movie History’

Of all the roles that Christian Slater has played in his 30-year career, one of his most beloved remains Clarence Worley, the comic book store clerk who falls for a cute call girl in True Romance . So it is ironic that when Movieline asked the actor — who stars in Fox’s upcoming workplace comedy Breaking In — to play a round of Movieline’s go-to parlor game last week, Slater described the big screen romance that rang truest to him. Hint: There ain’t gonna be no re-match for this very special round of My Favorite Scene.

Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain Nab First Sundance Deal

So you might have heard Sundance gets underway this week, but Sony Pictures Classics isn’t wasting any time on the acquisitions front: The distributor has picked up the Michael Shannon/Jessica Chastain psychological thriller Take Shelter , which premieres in competition Jan. 24. CAA — which represents virtually the entire principal cast as well as writer-director Jeff Nichols — sealed the deal with two days to spare before the fest’s opening night. And thus it falls off Movieline’s annual bidding-war forecast, also coming soon. Congrats to all.
