Nick Jonas Recalls ‘How To Succeed’ Fan ‘Craziness’

Jonas Brother and co-star Michael Urie, who end their Broadway run Sunday, tell MTV News the fans ‘say some pretty wild things.’ By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas Photo: MTV News Nick Jonas will end his run in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” when the Broadway show closes Sunday. The singer, along with his co-star Michael Urie, will no longer play business rivals on the Great White Way, but do continue to hold fond memories of their time in the show. When MTV News caught up with the actors recently, they recalled some of their favorite fan encounters during their tenure in “How to Succeed.” “The craziest fan encounter? The great thing about the fans is that they are polite during the show,” Jonas said. “At the beginning of the show, they have an opportunity get excited, and then throughout the show, they are very polite.” Everyone’s polite — at least, until Jonas got his smooch on. “Occasionally, they’ll have little outbursts of craziness,” he remembered. “It usually comes for me during the kissing moment during the show. They can say some pretty wild things I can hear out of the corner of my ear. It’s fun.” Urie joked, “I actually stand offstage during the kiss and scream things like, ‘Nick, Nick, oh Nick,’ with about that [deep] inflection.” All joking aside, Urie did have some warm, fuzzy encounters with the show’s fans before every performance. “Before the show, it’s fun to come into the theater every night, because there are people waiting. Sometimes there are people camped out waiting that aren’t even there to see the show,” he said. “They’ve already seen the show or they’re seeing the show in the future, and they’ll be like, ‘Hey Michael, good show.’ And they’re very cool and easygoing.” Both Jonas and Urie joined the show in January. Their run was expected to go until July 1, but they’re closing a bit early. With the show ending Sunday, Jonas will now devote more time to recording a new album with his brothers. The Jonas Brothers are currently hard at work on their follow-up to 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times . Have you seen “How to Succeed”? Share your review in the comments below! Does Demi Lovato Have ‘The X Factor’?

Experts break down Lovato’s casting on the Fox reality show to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: MTV The world is still reacting to the now-confirmed news that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will sit together at the “The X Factor” judges table this fall . While their spots on the show remain among worst-kept secrets in recent memory, these two former Disney princesses will now set out to prove they are savvy enough to judge up-and-coming talent on the Fox competition series. While L.A. Reid, Simon Cowell and Spears bring decades of experience with them to the show, Lovato, only 19, may seem too much like a rookie on the surface. But, she’s already amassed the kind of experience performers triple her age could wish for. She’s released three albums, which have all landed top-five spots on the Billboard 200. She’s starred on the hit Disney series, “Sonny With a Chance” and was the female lead, alongside the Jonas Brothers, in both “Camp Rock” films, which were incredibly successful for the Mouse House. All the success at such a young age makes Lovato a perfect pick for the show. “They’re looking for female pop singers who can engage a younger audience,” Monica Herrera, a senior editor at Rolling Stone, told MTV News. “Demi seems like a good choice because she hits not just music fans, but TV fans and I think they’re kind of trying to find somebody who can hit all angles.” She may have tons of teenage Lovatics, but Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts/retail at Billboard, added that she still hasn’t yet permeated the adult market, which makes this the right time to make this move. “I thought it was interesting choice just because, I mean, she is a star, but she seems a bit under the radar to a degree so this is a great look for her because it’s going to elevate her visibility and give her a whole new audience and a great platform to introduce new material,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for her to really expand her fanbase. I think a lot of people are going to discover Demi for the very first time.” And, that’s why, Herrera adds, she needs to strike while the iron is hot. “I think it’s definitely a smart move; I don’t think she can afford to wait at this point. I think that is kind of a way to jumpstart it and really get herself out there,” she explained. “Obviously she’s gonna want to put out an album timed to the fall show. She’ll have the team behind her to really kind of maximize this opportunity and put out a single and an album that will kind of get the lift that she really needs right now.” Caulfield notes that Lovato will serve as the perfect answer to Spears . “Demi, considering her history and frankly her years of experience, she’s gone through the ringer,” he said. “Demi is probably going to have more realistic commentary, probably not harsh but probably coming from the point of view of ‘I did this before.’ Certainly her and Britney have the X factor, that something about them that makes them stars, it’s hard to pin down. I think it’s going to be good. I think they’re both interesting choices.” So for anyone wondering if Lovato is still too young to mentor, well, Herrera says they should put those concerns aside. “I really think it does [help that she’s young], especially since they are skewing younger and younger with the contestants. I think someone like Demi would have been perfect for someone like Rachel Crow [who competed last season]. She obviously knows what it’s like to be thrust into the spotlight in that way from a really young age,” she said. “I really think that she can be that guiding force.” Do you think Demi Lovato has the “X Factor,” or is she too young? Joe Jonas Still Stewing Over Westlife’s Battle Of The Boy Bands Win

‘I’ll get you one day, Westlife,’ he jokes about the Jonas Brothers coming in second. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: MTV News It was a major brawl until the very last vote. But in the end, Westlife beat the Jonas Brothers in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands . Each boy band put up a good fight, but the fans spoke and the Irish quartet took home the metaphorical gold. If you think the Jonas Brothers are holding any grudges, well … they are! “You know what’s so funny, I didn’t know about it until we were down to the last two,” Jonas told MTV News on Wednesday (May 9), two days after the polls closed . “Nick and I were sitting together, and he was like, ‘Dude, you know we’re up for this MTV thing?’ He showed me — and Westlife won.” Jonas had this strongly worded message for the victors: “I’ll get you one day, Westlife.” All empty threats aside, Joe noted that the JoBros went as far as they did during the battle, which saw heavyweights like ‘NSYNC, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys voted out early on. “It’s awesome,” he said. “There’s a lot of incredible artists on there, so we fell very honored. Thank you, MTV. Is there, like, a runner-up award? Or is it kind of like Ricky Bobby [in ‘Talladega Nights’]: If you’re not first, you’re last?” During the competition, little brother Nick told us what he thought would be the JoBros’ secret weapon during the heated competition. “I think that we are a good one to vote for because we play our own instruments,” Nick said. “It’s a rare thing for a boy band. … I don’t know of a whole lot of boy bands that do that.” Related Videos Battle Of The Boy Bands Related Artists Jonas Brothers Joe Jonas

The Wanted Want Your Vote In Battle Of The Boy Bands

Round-one voting opens Monday — does the British fivesome have what it takes? By Jocelyn Vena The Wanted Photo: Getty Images Our Battle of the Boy Bands kicks off Monday, and while we imagine you will spend the entirety of your weekend weighing the pros and cons of your fave groups, MTV News reached out to some of the contenders so they could tell you why they deserve your vote. But before we hear from the Wanted, we wanted to take a look at some hard facts. Hey, this is basically an election, so we need to know where they stand on the issues! Highest Chart Achievement While “Glad You Came” peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, they went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart earlier this month. Standout Video Partying on the beach? Hanging with hot girls? Dancing and having a good time? The band’s “Glad You Came” video is a snapshot into the five Brits’ favorite things to do. (Next up, they will explore similar themes in their “Chasing the Sun” video .) Defining Tune Cheeky, dance-floor-ready and full of euphemisms (really think about it, guys), “Glad You Came” introduced America to the British fivesome. It seems we Americans are pretty glad they came. Debut Album While they have yet to drop their self-titled U.S. EP (it’s out Tuesday), the guys did release their first album, The Wanted, abroad in October 2010, and it peaked at #4 in the U.K. Biggest Competition They are currently trying to fend off One Direction in a race for the hearts of American girls. It’s the Sophie’s Choice of boy-band brawls. So why do the guys think you should vote for them? Their answer might surprise you! “We think you should vote for us because everything that we’ve ever been nominated for that goes to public vote, we’ve never won,” Max George pleaded. “And also, you should vote for us because we are the worst-looking boy band of all time,” Nathan Sykes added. The guys even weighed in on their favorite boy bands of all time. Siva Kaneswaran said, “My favorite boy band of all time is the Backstreet Boys. I have to say Backstreet Boys, because they showed me the reason for being lonely.” “My favorite boy band of all time has to be the Jonas Brothers,” George chimed in. “Have you seen ‘Camp Rock’? Sick film.” Voting in round one of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands begins Monday, April 23, at 7 a.m. ET and runs until noon ET on Thursday, April 26. One Direction Fueled By ‘Adrenaline Rush’ On ‘SNL’

Boy band opens up to MTV News about their debut appearance on the NBC sketch comedy show. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — One Direction knocked a major milestone off their bucket list on Saturday night when the guys took the famed stage of “Saturday Night Live” to perform. It was the first time anything resembling a boy band played the show since Valentine’s Day 2009 when the Jonas Brothers were the show’s musical guests. For a band whose chart-topping album is called Up All Night, it wasn’t difficult for the guys to spend the night wooing fans and non-One Directioners alike with their tracks “One Thing” and “What Makes You Beautiful.” The appearance proves that the guys have truly been embraced by the American public. MTV News was on set with the guys days before their episode aired and got a sneak peek at what the fivesome would be up to come show night. In addition to crooning their way into sleepless Americans’ hearts, they also got to shimmy their way through a talk-show-themed skit with host and “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara. They played the actress’ five kids, who learn that their father is sleeping with her incarcerated mother, whom she just met for the first time. “I think a lot of it is gonna be a big adrenaline rush,” group member Harry Styles told us during rehearsals. “The show’s so big over here. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and I think we’re gonna have as much fun with it as we can.” Niall Horan noted that the guys loved appearing on the show because they really do enjoy goofing around. “This is our kind of show,” Horan told us on set, in between rehearsals and photo shoots. “You know, we like to have a bit of a laugh. This is our perfect kind of show [and] we get involved as much as we can.” What did you think of One Direction’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live”? Tell us in the comments!
