Emmys Fashion: Kim Kardashian, Lea Michele Go Old-School Glam

Anna Paquin, January Jones and more take fashion risks that pay off at the awards show. By Jocelyn Vena Kim Kardashian arrives at the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images In a sea of blush, beads and black, there was an overarching theme on the Emmy Awards red carpet Sunday night (August 29): old-school glam. With the men evoking such Hollywood icons as Cary Grant and Clark Gable, the women hit the carpet in gowns that harked back to the golden era of the silver screen, thanks to retro silhouettes and an emphasis on glamour. Kim Kardashian paid homage to Elizabeth Taylor in a white Marchesa dress with a halter neckline and cape detailing and a big cuff by Lorraine Schwartz. “Glee” star Amber Riley took that same route, however, co-star Dianna Agron may have gone a bit too retro in a lilac-and-black-lace tiered dress that screamed “Gone With the Wind.” Lea Michele hit the mark in Oscar de la Renta, even if the fit was a bit off. Her strapless navy ruched gown certainly made a statement with its crazy skirt and a diamond choker by Lorraine Schwartz. Keeping it with the Gleeks, the guys went standard-issue red carpet, thanks to tailored dark suits, but Kevin McHale made the look all his own with his thick-framed glasses and gold bow tie. Then, there were the actors who vamped up the carpet. “True Blood” stars Rutina Wesley and Carrie Preston went bold in their printed gowns, but none as bold as Anna Paquin, who was gladiator chic in her Alexander McQueen gown with black and gold sequins. She also had the ultimate accessory, co-star and hubby Stephen Moyer, who kept it stylish in a suit and tie. “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev dazzled in a champagne ruched, one-shoulder gown with sparse beading that sparkled in just the right places. The cast of “Mad Men” also made bold statements on the carpet. The

The stars reminisce about tattoos, cemetery scares and singing careers. By Dan Schenek Asher Roth appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News When Asher Roth was 17, he remembered being a car-less “white boy wannabe.” The lively artist developed a fan base while attending college with the help of social-networking websites, and arrived on the mainstream hip-hop scene with a slew of mixtapes. Almost overnight, he found himself with a record deal and a full studio album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle. “In high school, I ended up finding my home with kids who had one common interest, and that’s hip-hop music,” Roth said on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” which premiered Saturday at 11 a.m. “We’d be carrying boom boxes around in our book bags like we were straight out of the ’80s,” Roth’s friend Brian recalled. “We started meeting regularly around school.” Before hanging with Hef, former “Girl Next Door” Kendra Wilkinson remembers eyeing her high school soccer coach. “Soccer was my love,” the California girl said. “I had a huge crush on my soccer coach. He was like the hottest thing to ever exist … I would totally flirt with him. I would wear shorter shorts than the other girls on purpose.” Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt said Wilkinson would act like she didn’t know what she was doing on the soccer field to get more attention from the studly coach. “I loved just having my soccer coach just yelling at me. It turned me on,” Wilkinson said. Kendra also reminisces about how she was freaked out when seeing windmills turning with no wind and hearing a crying baby at a cemetery. On the show, MTV reality-show vet Kelly Osbourne also looks back at her time in an American school and her first tattoo experience. “For me, it’s really the idea of having a tattoo than actually having it because once you have it, you’re like, ‘alright, ugly.’ Kelly’s first impressions of the American school system were also unique. “In England, I just went to school,” she said. “In America, I had to figure out if I was a jock, a nerd, a cheerleader — there are social groups for everything.” “When I Was 17” airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV. Asher Roth Remembers ‘Suburban Threat’ Crew On ‘When I Was 17’

MC recalls hanging with fellow hip-hop heads on the latest episode, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. By Mawuse Ziegbe Asher Roth appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News Asher Roth hit the hip-hop scene with a slew of mixtapes, which culminated with his cheeky 2009 debut LP Asleep in the Bread Aisle. His breakout single “I Love College,” an ode to the copious amounts of boozing and debauchery that comes with the pursuit of higher education, cemented his status as an inventive, fun-loving rap star. So it makes sense that he rocked a hip-hop career, because when Roth was 17, it was all about the music. “In high school, I ended up finding my home with kids who had one common interest, and that’s hip-hop music,” Roth says on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” which premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. The episode also features teenage tales from former Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson , who reminisces about putting the moves on her high school soccer coach, and Ozzy offspring Kelly Osbourne, who despite having spent many of her formative years on the MTV reality show “The Osbournes,” dishes about other memorable moments as a teen. Roth and his circle recall their shared love of hip-hop. “We’d be carrying boomboxes around in our book-bags like we were straight out of the ’80s,” says Roth’s homie Brian. “We started meeting regularly around school.” Roth reveals that in addition to a penchant for retro b-boy style, his crew went by an intimidating moniker: “We were called ‘Suburban Threat,’ ” Roth says. Even Roth’s mom can vouch for the crew’s intimidation factor. “They were boys from the suburbs, not boys from the ‘hood,” Roth’s mother says, before adding with a laugh, “And that could be threatening.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Kendra Wilkinson, Asher Roth and Kelly Osbourne — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Kelly Osbourne and Luke Worrall: It’s Over!

Kelly Osbourne and fiance Luke Worrall are over and done with. Rumors of a split between the couple were fueled Wednesday morning by exchanging angry messages on Facebook (NOTE: click here to follow THG on Facebook ). “Luke Worrall makes me sick!!!” the reality star, 25, seethed. Why so upset? A short time later, Perez Hilton posted on his blog that Worrall, 20, had cheated. Neither Worrall nor Osbourne has commented on that allegation. Kelly Osbourne and Luke Worrall have split up. “Thank you all so much for your support but the matter is private and will not be commenting enough damage has already been done!” Kelly wrote Wednesday. A few hours later, Kelly Twittered (follow THG on Twitter ) that she would “comment through song,” linking to En Vogue’s “My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It).” She added, “You can take my heart but NEVER my sense of humor!” Amen to that. The two – who began dating in 2008 – confirmed their engagement last year.

Lady Gaga Debuts New Song ‘You And I’ At Elton John Benefit

Video of Gaga performing new ‘rock-and-roll tune’ hits the Net. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga and Elton John (file) Photo: Kevin Kane/ WireImage We already know that Lady Gaga is pretty much finished with the follow-up to her smash full-length debut, The Fame. But now we finally have a peek at some of the material that might be on the album, thanks to footage of Gaga performing at Elton John ‘s White Tie and Tiara Ball last Thursday. “This is a brand-new record that no one’s ever heard before … ever,” she said while seated at one of her signature deconstructed pianos and wearing a bedazzled black bra and panties with black boots. “And I’ve never, ever played it live, ever.” On her Twitter , she described “You and I” as a “new song … written in NY on the piano I grew up on.” Sounding a tad hoarse, Gaga described the song to her audience as a bit of a “rock-and-roll tune,” predicting that for that reason it will not likely get used as a single, but that it is “very dear” to her heart. “It’s been a long time since I came around/ It’s been a long time, but I’m back in town/ And this time, I’m not leaving without you,” she sang, describing a whiskey-breathed lover for whom she’s pining. “He said, ‘Sit back down where you belong, in the corner of my bar with your high heels on,’ ” she continued, her voice rising and getting a bit more growly just before the band came in and provided a swaying backdrop to the bluesy rocker. ” ‘Sit back down on the couch where we made out the first time, and you said to me/ “Something, something about this place/ Something about lonely lights and my lipstick on your face.” ‘ ” She wasn’t kidding about the song having a rock edge, as the tune eschewed most of her dance flavor, right down to a rollicking barrelhouse piano solo, during which she stood up on the piano bench and bashed out some John-worthy runs on the black and whites. She finished the tune crouched on the bench, wailing, “You and I,” while pumping her fist, before giving it a big finish that included kicking a heel up on the keyboard and lying across the piano bench with her head on the ground. Gaga tweeted about her performance at the 12th annual fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, writing, “What a brilliant evening with wonderful friends. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. What a magical stage.” Gaga also took the stage in a wheelchair with her chest covered in fake blood and accompanied by an oiled-up male dancer for a run through “Alejandro,” and she performed her ballad “Speechless.” During the latter, John came out and joined her for a dueling-pianos showdown, trading off verses on the tune dedicated to Gaga’s dad and then reprising their Grammys duet with a snippet of his hit “Your Song,” during which he improvised the line, “I hope you don’t mind that I wrote down in words/ How wonderful life is with Gaga in the world.” The gothic-themed event took place at a Windsor mansion owned by John and partner David Furnish and featured performance artists wearing straight jackets and dangling from fake trees and bandaged men in white coats serving cocktails in medicine bottles. According to reports, guests included Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Beckinsale, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Jon Bon Jovi and Kid Rock. What do you think of Gaga’s new song? Let us know in comments below. Christina Aguilera Vs. Lady Gaga: Perez Hilton, Kristin Cavallari Weigh In

‘Everyone copies everybody,’ ‘Hills’ star Cavallari says about charges that Aguilera copied Gaga. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Damian Vaca Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records On the same day that Christina Aguilera released her new dance-heavy album, Bionic, Lady Gaga released her dark, over-the-top clip for her latest single, “Alejandro.” Although having the same release date may have been a coincidence, the move didn’t help to squash all those Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera comparisons . At the Logo NewNowNext Awards on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, everyone seemed to have an opinion about the situation. And mostly it came down to this: In the pop world hasn’t it all been done already anyway? “I love Christina Aguilera. I’ve always been a huge fan of hers, and I think Lady Gaga’s great as well,” “The Hills” star Kristin Cavallari explained to MTV News. “I think that everyone needs to just kind of let it go a little bit. Everyone copies everybody. I mean Lady Gaga copied Madonna. It’s the same thing. I think that everyone needs to calm down a little bit about it.” Lady Gaga’s pal Perez Hilton admits that while some say that Aguilera is taking some cues from the Lady Gaga playbook, it happens to be that both are doing their best Madonna. It just so happens that some are better at being Madonna than others, a point he’s made note of many times on his Twitter. “Just like Christina Aguilera, Gaga is paying homage to Madonna as well,” he said. “But unlike Christina Aguilera, Gaga is doing it really well.” In the end, Kelly Osbourne wonders: Can’t we all just get along? “It just seems to me like two girls fighting to be who they want to be,” she said. “And some people might like it and some people might not, and who cares?” What do you think of the Lady Gaga/ Christina Aguilera comparisons?
