Check Out Two New Photos From The Hobbit: Bilbo and Gandalf Face Off

Thanks to a couple of new stills in Empire magazine, the latest pictures of Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman’s sepia-hued prestige in The Hobbit are upon us! And they look… so shadowy. Like a Middle-earth version of There Will Be Blood , where Martin Freeman plays H.W. and McKellen plays a post-apocalyptic version of Daniel Plainview (whose Pringles mustache is replaced with a fibrous beard). Get a load of “young” Gandalf and a new quote from Peter Jackson.

Mark Wahlberg and Allen Hughes May Team On Noir Crime Drama Broken City

This is a fiery matchup for the ages: Mark Wahlberg (who once sparred with Eminem on Total Request Live ), and director/producer Allen Hughes (who once sued Tupac Shakur for attacking him on the set of a music video), may join forces on Broken City , “a noir-style drama about an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor to see if his wife is cheating on him.” Ooh. Vertigo meets Chinatown meets even more shadows. For novelty’s sake, I hope they throw in a fight with a rapper. [ Deadline ]

Paging Jacki Weaver! Producers Announce All-Star Aussie Effort Sydney, I Love You

Great news for Team Jacki has just cleared the wires at Movieline HQ — or at least potentially great news, or very likely great news: Two of Australia’s most prominent film figures are moving ahead with Sydney, I Love You , the latest shorts compilation to round up an all-star cast in the service of vast urban appreciation. The goal is, in their words, “a love letter from Australia’s top film talent to one of the great cities of the world” — much in the spirit of the 2006 omnibus Paris Je Taime and its 2009 companion piece New York, I Love You .

Both of the competing Snow White studio flicks are racing to the box office as we speak, but Universal’s revisionist take has scored the latest blow, casting Ian McShane as the leader of the dwarfs. Jim Carrey ‘Comes To Play’ At Movie Awards Again

He’s come as a hippie, a cult leader and a nervous star with an audible inner monologue — so what will he do on Sunday night? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jim Carrey at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images Jim Carrey’s appearances at the MTV Movie Awards are the stuff of legend. Who could forget the time he showed up dressed as a Jim Morrison-esque hippie when he won for Best Male Performance in 1999, drinking and smoking all night? The funnyman is back again this year, and supervising producer Jane Mun promises that this appearance will live up to Carrey’s rep for unpredictable hilarity. “Jim Carrey is the most-nominated MTV Movie Awards star,” Mun shared with MTV News. “Jim Carrey always comes to play. And he will be playing this Sunday!” The actor would only give some outlandish hints about what he’d be wearing for his latest appearance. “I’m wearing a suit that I’ve had made,” he told us. “It’s the latest in nanotechnology, so I’m able to project whatever I want on it.” Carrey and the Movie Awards go way back. He won his first prize back in 1995, Best Kiss for smooching Lauren Holly in “Dumb and Dumber.” In 2006, when he won the Generation Award , he donned a cultish white gown and was followed by dozens of people dressed as angels as he accepted his award from Will Ferrell, who called the star “brilliant” and a “talented son of a bitch” thanks to his versatility in the world of film. Carrey joked of his rank as the biggest winner of all time. “Why am I so blessed?” he asked onstage that year. “Why is my life so miraculous? Why do so many struggle with fame while I’m able to float effortlessly on the upper edges of the Hollywood status-phere? You like that word ‘status-phere’? I made it up last night. I made up a word.” When he won for Best Comedic Performance in 2009 for “Yes Man,” he “accidentally” shared his inner monologue instead of a planned speech. “I was choking in front of the world … in front of the good-looking kid from ‘Twilight.’ ” So, what exactly will Carrey be up to when he takes the stage this year? Mun teased, “He is going to be dressed to the nines with something else.” While there are many folks lined up to present at the show, Carrey is bound to be a highlight of the evening. Other attendees include Emma Stone, Generation Award winner Reese Witherspoon, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey and Josh Duhamel, and many more. Hosted by Jason Sudeikis, the 20th annual MTV Movie Awards air live tonight at 9 p.m. ET, from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
